Have pirates stopped burying the good stuff?

  • I still have been making it a point to bury treasure and I must say some top shelf stuff. Then I never receive notification anyone has dug it up. (I am guessing our maps get nuked on server merge) Then when I grab maps off the board.... I had four maps in a row that were... a single castaway chest. These were player maps too, not the default generated NPC maps.

Is this game mode burnt toast? Should I move on? Stop Burying full Fort captures, entire hauls of Flame Face Mouth Man loot or storage crates with 1k+ cannon balls?

  • The main problem is maps only last with a server, meaning at best they last for 48 hours. After that they disappear. So until Rare makes it so maps can move between servers, i'd probably stop doing it.

  • I dug up an entire GH vault the other day.

But yes, if you wish to do player maps, simply do them to help someone out.

  • I keep burying treasures. And I always combine good-value items and some trinkets on the same map.
I always pass on a small island and have a skeleton captain, I kill him and unbury the items on his map, and believe me, some very good things are coming. Then I go to an island, also small, near the outpost, and bury the treasures there. In this way, I've already made maps with two chests of grief, a chest of fury, and some other medium-value items.

  • I found 3 foul skulls and a wood crate at the RBH this morning after convincing myself to finally go get it. 😒

Meanwhile, if I jump over to an island for supplies with my ship sailing on, and also find loot, I will bury it until I can either come back for it, or failing that, I'll post it on the board - so, yeah, it's not always going to be bad loot, but pirates being pirates, they have a tendency to keep the good stuff unless they're feeling generous.

As for getting credit? I get a notification so far, say, about 50% of the time.

  • @el-spaniardchi makes sense then. I was wondering about that. Especially on the X box servers there are nights we get merged 3 to 4 times. :/

  • @dr-orchamedes Yeah. Hopefully Rare will fix the system to both help insentivise those who bury, and make it easier to find good maps for those who unbury!

  • I do because I imagine that new players will like to find items, starting from the point that they will find the island where the treasures are buried hehehehe

I sail Xbox Only servers almost exclusively and haven't had a merge in almost 2 weeks.

  • @galactic-geek maybe it is because our party is usually on separate coasts? We get merged all the time on Xbox.

I'm on the East coast, and usually set sail during weekday evenings and all-day Saturday/early afternoon for Sundays. For the holidays, I have typically been sailing at sunrise and the wee hours of the morning.

  • I have buried a bunch of stuff and never had a notice that someone recovered it. I quit bothering and just turn it in now. I never cared about this feature to begin with and was only doing it for credit anyways.

  • Unfortunately, Rare made the commendations as cheese-able as possible.

What they SHOULD have done was made the commendations for maps posted for specific pieces of valuable loot. Examples:
-Bury 20 Captains Chests and post the maps
-Bury 20 Villainous Skulls and post the maps
-Bury 20 Crates of Exquisite Spices and post the maps
-Bury 5 Captains Skulls of the Damned and post the maps
-Bury 5 Ashen Winds Skulls and post the maps
    -Etc.

  • I still drop a Map or two every session I play on US East Coast servers, and I always try to ensure it is worth it (top Tier regulars, Cursed Chests, opened Ashen Chests with the Loot still in it, etc). Of course, I'm one player in one region of servers so it might not mean a whole lot in the bigger picture, but I'll keep on doing it so some folks out there at least have a chance to find something worth their time doing them.

So if you see anything posted by my screen name feel free to grab it, you're gonna end up with something that was worth the time to sail to that island.

  • I stopped burying for two reasons

1 - Because nobody was claiming my loot and I was wasting time and money for nothing.

2- Because I was burying value stuff like Flamehearts, Athenas and Ashen loot and when I was digging I was getting only trash skulls and merchant crates. 5 of every 100 pieces of loot are decent, the rest was trash.

I don't like to be trolled every time so I ended the commendations and stopped doing this maps.

  • I stopped burying all together after not being rewarded for burying a large haul.

  • Yup they shouldn't have allowed non valuable loot to be buriable.

You get a foul skull sure, you might not like it but AT LEAST you can turn it in if you want.

You get an empty crate and you're just upset about it.

We could troll with gunpowder. That's good enough, IMO.

You're right, they probably should have, but you know what? They still could. 😊

  • @dr-orchamedes

Festival of Giving was taking most of my loot lol. It'll probably be after the first before I start doing intentionally good Maps. Unless I get another Rage/Sorrow combo from Skelly orders 😅 then troll map time!

Really? That's kind of surprising to me. I guess I should stop burying huge amounts of very valuable stuff then, because I don't think I've ever gotten any rewards for doing it, and this could be why. And I also don't think I've ever found a good player-made map on the board either. Kinda sad, and I hope they improve on it like you suggested very soon.

  • @linentable78290

You still get seasonal renown even if no one takes your map. It's a small amount and kinda pointless if you're maxed for the season, but you do get a little something.

  • @pithyrumble How'd you do the event though? Did you just have to put loot on your ship and have other players sink your ship or something? Because even with the event flag people only seemed interested in killing me instead of peacefully taking me loot.

Good to know, but since I'm also still wanting to get gold to buy me some sweet cosmetics for my ship I don't think it'd currently worth it if people don't ever end up digging my stuff up.

  • @linentable78290

I did coral shrines and left the loot at the nearest Outpost. Repeatedly. (Obvs why I wasn't burying lol) Kept playing so people could find it.

  • @pithyrumble - Ah. Smart. I'll try that next time. We should get back on topic now though. xD

You can't bury storage crates btw...

  • Bury chests is such a waste of devs time and recources imo...always wondered why so many suggested this and now nobody's doing it anymore as soon as they did theyr commendations...

  • Yea, the implementation that they went with doesn't really hit the mark (despite the fact that I still do it, and despite me being one of the people who always thought it wouldn't work). That said, I think they could have actually pulled it off seeing this, and suggested it multiple times around these parts:

    • This should have been positioned around the Bilge Rats and made them the "player content" Faction
    • Those who bury Loot should be awarded with Doubloons (alongside the Rep and Renown) based on the value of the Loot buried (making it a choice of Gold for selling or Doubloons for burying, and giving incentive to burying valuable Loot)
    • They should have revived the Black Market and moved those back to Larinna as well as started adding more Doubloon based Cosmetics (so there is something to spend earnings on)

Just those core changes would have added a lot of value behind all of this as a system and made it all more worth it. In addition to that, I also think these facets would have been good bonuses:

    • Maps should have been contested, meaning more than one Crew could have the same Maps at the same time to add something a little different from normal GH style X Mark Maps
    • The payout notification should just always say "Your buried treasure was found" so that you really don't know if it was players finding it or a server shutdown
    • Server shutdown shouldn't give a reduced reward compared to a player finding it, to further obscure if people found it or the server shutdown (you shouldn't be penalized for the fact that the servers shutdown and spin up regularly)
    • Sunken Loot (that which despawns from floating too long in the water) should generate a Lost Shipment Voyage as this would add more variety in the options (and throw a bone to players who get sunk but their aggressor doesn't actually take the Loot) as this would make some losses sting less for new players who will always get rolled more often than experienced Crews (and pair nicely with Seasonal rewards to help keep the less PvP inclined motivated)

Add all of that together and I think that people would be much more willing to engage with the Maps/Player generated content long term. Maybe they will take this approach eventually, bring some more life to it all. Maybe they have other ideas on how to expand it to make it more appealing.

In the meantime I'll probably keep on keeping on with it and making a Map or two every session and posting it namely cause I just don't care and am not bothered by not cashing in directly at all (I'll even often logout with Loot on my Ship still just cause I don't care realistically, and with my bonus idea this would also generate a Map type).

I sure hope they do. It's a shame the quest board is basically obsolete just a couple weeks into its existence. Even the Shrines probably get more use than the quest board at this point.

  • @schwammlgott You can bury storage crates. ;) Did it two or three days ago. There a some places on islands where you cannot bury anything though.

  • I buried an Ashen Key and golden skulls while I'm out exploring as a Merchant

  • I buried an entire athena grade 5 quest. nest time i logged in i got nothing for it. I buried garbage loot to fill out the commendations and haven't buried anything since I finished.
