Keyboard Lag in both regular game AND Insider?!?!

  • I tried playing last night and my computer is experiencing some type of keyboard lagging for walking around. When I press WASD there is a very slight delay before character starts moving. Then, when I release there is a LONG delay before I STOP walking. This delay seems to vary, but increases the longer you are walking. So, if I walk 5 ft the extended walking might last 2-3 seconds but if I walk 10 ft the extended walking might last 10 seconds. This is broke in all directions.

Things I have tried with no success.

    • Checked Insider edition - it is doing the same thing there
    • Swapped in wired keyboard for my wireless keyboard
    • Rebooted computer 10 times
    • Updated Windows
    • Uninstalled the last driver I installed (for a graphics tablet)
    • Tested other videos games that were NOT Sea of Thieves (they work fine)

So - I have no idea what Sea of Thieves and Insider share that could cause the problem to exist in both editions. Also, it is odd that no one else is reporting this type issue.

Also - I have another computer in house (wife's) that has SoT installed and hers works just fine on the same network.

The only other thing I can think to try is completely uninstalling and re-installing SoT and Insider?

  • Can you plug an ethernet cable right into your PC from the router to see if it is a problem with Wi-fi? I had this problem recently in Florida. If anyone else was on the Internet the game would lag and the wireless connection was poor unless I was right next to the router.

  • @cornelius-ix

I will try that when I get home - also I'll be taking my laptop home which has Sea of Thieves as well so I can see how IT performs on the Wifi.

I wasn't suspecting the wifi because everything else in the game is running smooth / graphics are great / etc - however, I guess it could be the wifi because the internet connection is used to send my location to the server and back again.

  • Next steps - still broke

    • connected another wired keyboard
    • brought home gaming laptop and tested on home wifi = works just fine with same xbox account
    • connected broke computer to the wifi hotspot on my phone to rule out home internet a different way = still broke

The only other thing I know to try is uninstalling the software and reinstalling it - however, I can't see how that would fix anything since BOTH SoT and Insider are broke the same way. I also checked all keys on keyboard and they are ALL LAGGING - not just the WASD keys. Changing weapons / jumping / etc - all delayed. On wired and wireless keyboards.

  • @robert-mcsot
Could it be an keyboard accessibility setting on your PC ?

Nevermind - read that you tried it on other games.

  • UPDATE: Found more info - and a temp fix.

After trying dozens of settings I found that I can run the game in "Windowed" mode instead of "Full Screen" and it runs fine. As soon as I put it back in Full Screen then it goes back to laggy keyboard.

I have a 2070 Super so I updated my NVIDIA drivers (it said I had one from July 2021 but I know I've updated since then. Anyway - I let it install the driver, rebooted, and tried optimizing the game again... still the same issue.

So for now I will just play in Windowed mode and check it from time to time to see what happens.

  • @robert-mcsot

Today I have experienced exactly the same thing on my PC, which was running the game nicely a few weeks ago.

Specs: AMD ryzen 3900X, 32GB RAM, RTX 3080Ti, no wifi, very good optical fiber connection.

    In Full screen:
The game runs nicely, between 80 and 144 fps, no lag on mouse, horrible lag on keyboard (smallish on key press, huge - 4-5sec - on key release).
When using an xbox controller, no input lag at all.

    In windowed mode:
All runs fine, but the bar at the top and the task bar are far from enjoyable in game.

I tried approximatively the same things as Robert, plus a few tweaks in the nVidia 3D parameters.

  • @ovenfrite
I'm sorry you are having the same issues. At least this gives me some hope that my graphics card wasn't about to melt down.

I'm suspecting something going on with NVIDIA drivers as I am also have a bit of lag in a graphics program that I use. My laptop also has an RTX 3070 in it so I might compare what drivers it is running since I'm having no issues on it.

  • @robert-mcsot It could be a problem with the drivers for your processor. I think that would explain the windowed/full screen thing. If it’s Intel you can go here and run their software to check for updates. https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/detect.html

  • @cornelius-ix

    Thanks for the suggestion.

Ovenfrite has AMD processor with same issue... my laptop is AMD processor and doesn't have the issue. My desktop is Intel and has the issue... so what the heck - I downloaded and installed the Intel tool you suggested.

    Here is what happened.

    • found driver update for bluetooth
    • found driver update for Intel wifi

    Installed updates and rebooted.

Checked computer. Keyboard lag is still present in fullscreen mode :(

On a plus side - not sure if I had a bad connection when I played last night... my computer dropped to 40-50 fps from the normal 90 fps.

After doing the Intel updates and testing game I'm getting close to 100 fps now... not sure if it is related.

For now it is not a big deal to use windowed mode. I'm on an Alien 34" widescreen so a tiny bar at top and bottom doesn't really affect me and I can turn off the bottom toolbar if I really want to.

  • I am so glad I'm not the only one suffering from these issues! If anyone finds a proper fix other than running outside of windowed please please let me know, I've updated all my drivers and am still having trouble.

  • Exact same issues here for me as well, can only play in Windowed mode.

  • @robert-mcsot Same issue for me, the game is completely unplayable in fullscreen with keyboard.
I have to either play with a controller, or switch to windowed mode.

A friend of mine plays with his keyboard in fullscreen without issues, so maybe is a problem related to some graphic cards? He's running and AMD Ryzen 5 2600 with an NVidia GTX 1650.

    My specs are:

    • AMD Ryzen 3700X
    • NVidia RTX 2060
    • 32GB DDR4 3600

I hope this gets fixed soon, I bought the game yesterday and I'd love to play with mouse and keyboard.

  • Maybe this will help for identifying where the problem lies, game has been perfect up until the past few days.

    My specs (no overclocks):

    • Windows 10 Pro, Version 21H1 (up-to-date, most recent KB4023057 on 8/6/2021)

    • Ryzen 9 5900X

    • 2x GTX 1080 Ti EVGA FTW3 in SLI

    • NVIDIA Graphics Driver Ver. 471.41. (installed on 7/24/2021)

    • 64GB DDR4 3200MHz

I've tried all the steps I could think of to resolve this issue:

    • Swapped out keyboard/changed to different USB Ports

    • Changed various graphic settings within game

    • Changed various graphic settings in NVIDIA Control Panel

    • Disabled G-SYNC

    • Uninstalled/reinstalled SoT

    • Etc., etc.

My speculation is it might be related to Windows updates, things usually break for me when these are installed (thanks MS).

  • I can see some other Windows updates that were installed on 7/30/2021, one of which has caught my eye:

    July 29, 2021—KB5004296

    • Updates an issue that prevents gaming services from opening certain games for desktop users.

    • Updates an issue that prevents power plans and Game Mode from working as expected. This results in lower frame rates and reduced performance while gaming.

I'm still digging, maybe I can find the culprit.

UPDATE: Uninstalling KB5004296 does not resolove the issue.

  • Fixed my issue, SoT working again in Fullscreen!

Took me a couple of days of troubleshooting... long story short, the culprit was Microsoft Power Toys which I updated on 8/7/2021 (v0.43.0), with this running in the background SoT is not playable for me in Fullscreen, when I exit/close Power Toys SoT runs just fine like normal.

I hope this info helps those also affected by this keyboard lag issue, check/close your applications running in the background/taskbar until you find the rouge application.

    Good luck!

  • UPDATE: There is a setting within Power Toys that seems to be the specific issue, Keyboard Manager... I can leave Power Toys running and have no issues in SoT in Fullscreen as long as 'Enable Keyboard Manager' is set to OFF.

  • @furious-fantom OMG this was the problem!! Thank you so much for posting!
I never thought about Power Toys.

    Again, thank you!

  • OMG - AWESOME FIND - Same issue on my machine. Full Screen working fine now after turning off Keyboard Manager.

    THANKS!!!!!
