We see an empty server more often than several ships, why is that? We, me and my colleagues talk about it more often; how nice it would be that, for example; 10 to 20 ships could be online simultaneously on a server, then we have a lot of interaction wich is fun. This is a great wish from us.
More ships on a server, could it be tecnical possible?
@rudyman85 well here's the thing, the game was actually purposely designed to make encounters with other crews an uncommon thing. The idea being that when you do eventually fond another crew, it'll be more wondrous, more special.
There are technical issues. For a while the number of ships on a server was brought down to 5 due to technical issues and was only recently brought up to 6 again. Any more than that and I think it'll make the servers too unstable.
Beyond that. Having 10 to 20 ships on a server would be a bit of a nightmare. People do want to get stuff done other than pvp. That many ships would pretty much mean you're fighting nonstop from the moment you log in until you log off. That just not how the game was envisioned.

Currently the limit is 6 ships per server. I also think it would be good to increase them to 7 or 8. Anything above that, I feel could make the servers feel a bit overcrowded.
But that's not the only thing though. There are also technical barriers. The servers are already sweating as it is. The ping is high - don't remember when I last played with under 80 ping (in EU) - probably was years ago. And it gets worse when other ships are around as well.
And finally, the game must be able to run on some ancient xbox console, but I'm not aware what the deal is there. I think Rare must keep a balance in order for the hardware not to get overloaded and explode or something.
Think of it this way - there are 7 outposts to turn in at, 2 per region + the 1 in the DR. This means that if all of the ship's camp an outpost, you will always have at least 1 outpost free to still turn loot in at. Also, this isn't even including the Reaper's Hideout. A similar argument can be made for the forts and Sea posts as well.
more ships on the same size map just makes it to where less ships will do large hauls organically and alliances once again greatly benefit
keeping servers less empty with efficient algorithms is fine but I don't see more ships on the same map being good for the environment that serves all play types not just some
Rare had knocked the ship per server down to 5 while they fixed some performance issues they had and now they are up to six again.
seeing as getting the original 6 in the server tells me that to cram more in would cause performance issues. That said if they plan on expanding the map with more zones then naturally they would have to explore ways to get more ships on the server so the encounter rate stays about the same.
If a server is true empty....How would you even know if your on the "empty" server? If you are on one...it isn't empty. Since I believe there will always be at least 2 ship/crews.

Also one more thing: With all the complaints from players asking for "PvE servers" being sunk by other pirates....they must not be that empty :/
