PC Client recently started rubberbanding every 3-4 seconds - completely unplayable (video included)

  • Hello

I have a gaming PC with almost decent specs and about 2-3 months ago I could play SoT without issues. I could even use mythical graphics settings, and my FPS would be around 30-40 on islands with absolutely no rubberbanding/stuttering. But when opening the game up today, it is completely unplayable and I have attached a video depicting the experience. There is rubberbanding/stuttering every 3-4 seconds:

I absolutely DO NOT think this is a network issue, as I am using a cabled connection, I have around 12 ping to 8.8.8.8 over long periods of time, and I never notice network issues with any other games or services. In game my ping is around 70-90 and does appear to be very stable.

I looked at the update history in windows update, and could not find any updates that had been done to the graphics card drivers or anything related.

I have tried both using Microsoft store and Steam clients, but they both have the same issue. I have tried with various graphics settings on and off, and at the highest and lowest settings and the issue still persists.

Do you have any idea what might cause this? I am completely clueless, and it is a crying shame, because I really enjoy the game.

  • Pinging Google DNS servers doesn't mean you don't have a connection problem to the SoT Azure servers - the path to both could be completely different.

Rubberbanding is usually due to packet loss. Your packets aren't being received by the server, or you aren't receiving packets from the server, and your position is being reset because the server is correcting your position based on where it thinks you should be. This is basic sanity checking to prevent things like players running at super speed and teleporting.

If it's not an issue with your network or route to the server, then it could be hardware. If your GPU or CPU or something else is bottlenecking it could be delaying your outgoing packets enough that the server is trying to correct your position.

  • I can play the xbox client on the same network without rubberbanding issues, that should rule out connection problems due to different paths.

Im not sure rubberbanding is the correct term, I don't move unexpectedly, I just get a weird "freeze frame" that lasts for about 0.5s every 4-5 seconds. The audio cuts out in the video I included, but that is only in the recording - in the game, the audio is consistent.

Before the latest update hit, I could play without this issue, and now it happens all the time. This leads me to believe it's a regression in the software, and I'm a bit surprised that these forums are not flooded with similar topics. It could of course be a software issue on my computer, but I have not installed any new drivers or any new hardware, so I have no idea what might cause it - any help is appreciated.

  • I am having similar issues today. Sure, sometimes you get the occasional rubberband effect but today has been extreme. Ship jittering, position resetting, enemies freezing and then moving again etc.

Connection seems fine otherwise across the household.

  • @snickarjesus It looks like your connection to PlayFab servers; try joining someone or VPN to another region and see if the problem still exists. If you are still experiencing rubber banding on data centers that use different routing from your ISP, then check your connection for packet loss and/or uncorrectables. You may want to power cycle your router as well.

Is this really possible, given that it plays with no issue on my xbox? I thought it was cross platform and the same servers

  • @snickarjesus Xbox servers and cross play servers have different IP addresses, so your connection could vary. Reference your in game ping with your local data center here. If your native latency differs from what the speed test shows, it may be a routing problem with your ISP.
