Linux version is regressing

  • One of the latest patches seems to cause problems, if your trying to join a friend, you will get stuck in the loading screen basically on "loading fresh supplies".

At the moment it's fine for me, as I'm playing on a sloop, with another player that is on windows, so as long as I'm the first to start the game, we're good.

The other problem is, that if I leave a server and try to get into a game again, it will also get stuck.

You can find more infos here: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/3931#issuecomment-821752230

  • @razze87 as far as I am aware this game isn't designed to run on Linux, just like its not meant to run on Apple. Your workarounds are just that and Rare isn't going to fix something for an unsupported platform.

  • @captain-coel They still might want to be aware. I've also read, that windows players seem to be affected too, it's just happening less for them.

  • @razze87 why would they care about issues on a platform they dont support?

  • High 5 Linux lol.
So funny story a scammer called me and said my PC was infected when I was running Linux. Ubuntu. I asked him what platform I was on and he said windows. I said no. And he said OS whatever it was ... I lol'd

Anyway. SoT is nice. Make it work for linux too lol. And maybe apples.

  • @captain-coel bigger platform = more sales in the cosmetics store

And as stated, it's working fine. There are some problems, like missing voice chat (I guess that might be an improvement) and you don't get achievements when you earn them, but on the next login.
    See: https://www.protondb.com/app/1172620

It's mostly just the regression from the latest patch(es) that is a problem for parties with multiple linux players.

  • @razze87 Again: Linux is not a supported platform. They are not going to spend time fixing issues for an unsupported platform that it wasn't even designed to work on anyways. It doesn't matter how much money Linux players bring in, they're not updating the game to work on Linux until it is officially supported.

  • I get people's point about Linux being an unsupported platform however from the perspective of a company trying to make money it would make sense to go for it.

Now getting it to be cross-platform is another story, if someone could please tell me as I dont know. is sea of thieves sold on steam as well as Xbox and is the steam version also cross platform or just steam exclusive servers
If its the latter, maybe Rare should do a survey to find out how many people use linux.

  • @sailorkek steam runs with the same people that windows store does.

@razze87 Microsoft owns Rare. Rare developed and supports Sea of Thieves as a Microsoft exclusive title. Whether it be Windows, Xbox, or Xcloud its all Microsoft. Linux is not a supported system and likely never will be. So there is no reason to fix an issue that doesn't exist for their ecosystem. Just remember a future bug could completely break the Linux ability to play and they still wouldn't care.

  • This is an issue for Proton, not Rare as they do not have a native Linux client.

  • @Captain-Coel are you part of microsoft? otherwise I'm not sure how you would know if they care from the outside. microsoft itself is heavily invested in linux at this point in time.

@d3adst1ck your probably right, it's hard to tell. Still I think it's best to document this here and hopefully make more people aware.

  • @sailorkek , @razze87 you genuinly do not want to know the amount of development time and money it will cost to make it platform compatible with linux. (Little hint, its ALOT!)

Then afterwards, not only have they poured alot of money down that rabbit hole, it keeps continuing to do so with every update they want to release and test.

Then you can consider that Linux only has a GLOBAL desktop operating system marketshare of a whopping 2.18% just above chrome os with 2.02%, thats not even thinking of the fact that not all those people actually play any sort of game.

So lets use steam stats, a whopping 0.85% of all steam users use it on linux...

The return on that investment would be next to impossible to make even break even on let alone make actual money on.

There is no way in heck they are going to do anything about this, this is a proton issue and should be taken up there

  • @callmebackdraft I have no idea why your trying to build a case for a linux port. The proton port is fine and working great, with some minor hickups, it's just unlucky that the last patches seemed to regress it.

Btw, that would mean 8.500.000 (about the population of Switzerland) users according to https://variety.com/2019/gaming/news/steam-one-billion-accounts-1203201159/ which is old and likely higher now. But sure, they would have to buy the game first.

Im not making the case for a linux port, im making it against it, its not worth the dev time and money

1b accounts doesnt equal 1b users, there is multiple people with multiple accounts. average peak users is only 25m

It's not a port. Proton is an emulator for Windows games, which is why if there are issues with a particular game it's an issue for Proton, not the developers, because they do not have an actual linux client.

It might not even be an issue with the game itself, but with the way Proton is trying to provide compatibility for a Microsoft service.
