Idea for new company: the Swashbucklers

  • Tl,dr: new faction that rewards you for taking risks and doing daring things.

    Sea of Thieves encourages players to "be more pirate", and the factions that are currently in the game all focus on some aspect of that motto: gold hoarders for digging up buried treasure, reapers bones for ship-battles, order of souls for sword/gun fights, etc. However, we're missing a faction that rewards players for capturing the confident, rakish pirate persona that are common in Errol Flynn movies (he defined a lot of the modern pirate tropes).

    Enter the Swashbucklers!

    This company will give crews "dares" to complete. These dares encourage the player to do risky things in exchange for a reward. Here are some examples:

    • Save yourself from taking lethal fall damage by grabbing a ladder

    • Land on the deck of a ship after falling XX amount

    • Sail XX distance while carrying XX gunpowder kegs on your ship

    • Sail XX distance while carrying XX amount of treasure on your ship

    • Complete a public event while carrying XX amount of treasure on your ship

    • Sail XX distance while in the storm

    • Kill XX enemies at once with a gunpowder keg

    • Hit a ship with a cannonball from XX distance

    • Block XX amount of damage while your health remains in the red

    • Fully empty your ship of water after it almost sinks.

    • Shoot yourself from a cannon someplace that cannot otherwise be accessed (such as the cannon cove spire)

    Some dares require more risk than others, so are worth more. Likewise, you can fulfill any dare without involving other players (such as shooting a skeleton ship from a distance or landing on the deck of your own ship after a long fall), but you'll receive a larger reward if you fulfill a dare via PvP.

    Mechanically-speaking, each dare is a physical object resembling a scroll that can be carried in one hand (like a skull or gem). You can read the dare like you would a merchant cargo. If anyone on your crew fulfills the dare, it becomes an "fulfilled dare", which can be turned in to the representative for gold/experience. Careful: other players can turn in your completed dares just like any other treasure! Like the merchants alliance, you can find individual dares throughout the world, or pull multiple from the representative after voting on a voyage.

    I wanted this company to offer something that could be completed while doing other things, rather than something that would be your main focus (hence why some of them are based off of achievements or past Bilge Rat activities). I also wanted the dares to be realistically achievable in the session you receive them, so I avoided anything that required other players or specific world events to complete.

  • So basically a slight upgrade of the event tab ?
    It's not the worst idea but we already have something to dare us to do things. ^^'
