I thought i was talking about live streaming here?
Now, if they were to suggest we watch some user created content that was meaningful and enjoyable and relevant to the game, to earn a reward that would be totally different.. But they are not!

@comrade-molly I see that, but you only make my job harder :(
I am here supporting where I can but really need the help of regulars like yourself to know where that line is.
Don't worry I have just got online so keeping an eye on this one!

Twitch and Youtube are two sides of the content creation coin. Most people who produce Youtube content also stream, because streaming affords them the revenue they need to spend more time producing videos for Youtube as well. It also gives them hours of footage to use for their videos.

Most people have said similar.. Just click the tab and close window.
So, what's the point in any of it then? Clearly no one wants to be subjected to watching it, that's evident from what's written.I have been looking at streamer numbers on this game now and then for a few years now, since the delusion became apparent that these people were needed to make a game succeed. And considering millions play this game and only a small handful of thousands watch people playing this game. I'll leave that there. The numbers speak volumes.
The game, and all games will be fine without them. And i would much rather earn content from a game by playing it, rather than do something non game related to earn rewards.
The numbers Rare releases are a clever marketing trick, and they know it. They release total player numbers but they include anyone who's installed the game on Game Pass and tried it once. (This is how we get the lie of "only 3% of players play Arena") (...)
They did not say anything about percentage of players, the 3% you are referring to is time spend in Arena (Joe mentioned that more than 97% of playtime is spend in Adventure).
The amount of time spend by players who installed from Game Pass and tried it once is probably very small.
@needsmokes They play the online game, they use game chat, they agree to those possibilities. Not anyone's fault but the ones letting the children play.

With so little new content in this update, why oh why are certain items only tied to this horrendous system of unlocking things?
I'm sure most people would much rather play the game they love and earn items the traditional way.
Enough of it.. Add content to your game and stop trying to make us watch this nonsense to earn things.
It speaks volumes when you have to be bribed to watch people play video games when really, you shouldn't be watching at all but playing them haha.
I hate the forced watching of it.
They should allow us to earn then by playing too. đ
I don't understand why watching 20 minutes of Sea of Thieves is such an imposition. It's about the easiest possible way to get free stuff, short of Rare just outright giving it to you. And there some really good streamers out there. My personal favorite is Beardaggedon. He's a genuinely nice guy and a great player. There are many others. The point is, Twitch drops are not that hard to get. More importantly, they help support the streamers who promote the game. There's always a huge spike in viewers during drops. A percentage of those viewers will stick with a streamer, who in turn helps generate interest in the game. It's a win-win.
The reason I don't want to have to view twitch to gain cosmetics for a game that I would rather have the opportunity to earn in the game itself is because I personally don't see the positive side of streaming, and I have no desire to help falsely temporarily boost someone's viewing figures to encourage more of it. The reward simply doesn't encourage me to do so. No reward would.
I have never seen high viewing figures for SOT, and fail to grasp the overwhelming desire of Rare to keep chasing streaming figures.
The game itself is fantastic, and the amount of people who play it is amazing, even after all this time it still grows. Not because of a few thousand people watching someone behaving a bit silly playing it, but by the games attraction and reviews itself.
Currently on Twitch:
Chess - 50k+ viewers.
SOT during a giveaway 13k viewers.
What's the point? Worry more about game content and not about who might be watching (not playing)
@needsmokes Chess has been a game that has transcended countries and centuries - it has had plenty of time to build upon its popularity.
In addition, the fact that Netflix has a limited series specifically about Chess (Queen's Gambit - I highly recommend it for our older viewers) that's been in their Top 10 for multiple weeks running probably has a hand in that game's growth recently well.

Okay. So don't bother then. There are already plenty of cosmetics you can earn playing the game. Go earn them and enjoy yourself. But many people do enjoy watching streamers, as evidenced by the popularity of Twitch.

SoT actually does fairly well on Twitch. While you may personally be unimpressed by the numbers at any particular moment in time, those numbers add up over time. Like it or not, Twitch viewership is important to gaming companies. Your failure to grasp this doesn't change its importance. Twitch is part of any modern game's marketing strategy.

Absolutely. But it's also a bit silly to deny the importance of streaming completely. A "few thousand people" at any given hour of the day adds up quickly over time. Surely you can do the math. Gaming companies aren't just wasting their time here. They know what they're doing.

Chess is the oldest strategy game in the world. I think it's fair to expect a rather high viewership.

There's no earthly reason they can't do both. I think it's fair to say Rare has shown they do indeed care about game content. They also care about Twitch. They're not mutually exclusive. If you really don't like Twitch, don't watch. Don't worry about the drops. No big deal.
@genuine-heather Aren't the drops, along with the recently released event items, going to be available in the future under different circumstances and challenges? Quite frankly, I don't think those who are complaining about this really have any legs to stand on.
I certainly hope these beautiful icey cosmetics will be available to earn in game at some point; my main gripe with releasing cosmetics via drops is that if you miss a single day, well you're out of luck. Also, they shouldn't really be adding cosmetics thru such means when it's been nearly a year since the in-game clothing stores have received new clothes...
I like the twitch drops, its great for people who dont have alot of gaming time, or their gaming time is inconsistent. you can leave a stream running on your pc while you arent home or have it muted on mobile and collect your items when you have a chance that day. If it was a limited time event in game and that doesnt line up with your schedule you are just kinda out of luck if you dont have time to grind out the event. From what i can see, they are adding both, there are the event items in game and the drops going on simultaneously, so I dont really see what the issue is here.

Best solution is to fire up a stream, minimize the screen and play Sea of Thieves, it is kinda a cheap move to "boost" views but if it gets me more people in SoT to kill I'm fine with it. I do agree PvE needs an overhaul with content and gear.
@needsmokes Watching a drop does not prevent you from playing the game. You can pull up a stream on your phone as you play. You donât even need to actually listen to it. You can mute it and sit there for the 20 minutes and collect a bunch of free stuff. I seriously donât see the problem or why youâre complaining.

Just to be clear Im not a fan of the entire twitch drop thing either. Especially since when I do it most of the time I have to contact Rare for my stuff and yes everything is linked up properly.
It was changed a bit back and you actually have to press a âclaimâ button on twitch once the watch time is complete. Not sure if this might be your issue.

So tell me.. What is even the point?
It seems that is most peoples answer to gaining twitch rewards.
Very few people have any interest in watching a stream, even when cohersed into it for cosmetics.
And one more thing.. This game is rated 12 in the UK, Children aren't legally allowed to sign up to Twitch until they are 13. So Rare have already denied content to its youngest players.

This.
Also throw in how the Obsidian Shipset seems to only be available by watching (and winning) a streamer's giveaway and it makes it clear how much Rare wants us to watch people playing this game.
But I've also wondered if maybe the shipset is used as a way to keep the streamers playing SoT? i.e. "We can guarantee you'll have X number of viewers if you giveaway this set!"

You're not really doing anything here but insulting some of the most dedicated players, who give the game free advertising.
I don't think people like you realize how dead this game would be if it weren't for content creators doing more to advertise the game than the devs themselves.
You literally don't even have to watch the streamer; just mute the tab (not the player) and leave it open for 30 minutes, then claim your drop.
LOL, it is you and your type that grossly overestimate the amount of "influence" these streamers actually have and their effect on population or sales. Giving them credit for saving the game is but one example of this hubris.

Twitch giveaways for SoT skins is just Rares way to inflate veiw counts in the hopes that someone who dosn't watch or play SoT see X (high veiw count) on a SoT stream. This in theory should bump up sails and overall exposure.
If I'm wrong then please explain why they are taking players who play their game out of the game to win skins. Dosnt make sense. It's like using bots on youtube subscriptions, if the numbers high chances are people will want to see what the hypes about đ
@blindnev Within another year or so it's very possible that skins earned in game will be the Rarest ones on the market. Not because they are hard to get, but because alternative method skins (what I'm naming any skin earned by not actively playing) are so much more abundant than in-game ones.

I'm very confused by people with this negative attitude about it
there have been events going on for months and all of the events are unlocking cosmetics. I'm unlocking cosmetics through gameplay constantly .
The events seem to be something they are interested in keeping around which will be more and more cosmetics that we earn through playing the game. You're dissing the entire cake just because you don't like the color of the frosting. All of this is good for all of us. Free delicious cake is even better than the kind you pay for.

Many of the skins earned in-game are already some of the rarest in terms of use - I see so many with the "rarer" sets, I'm certain that it's all topsy-turvy.

I've played a year and there are SIGNIFICANTLY more opportunities to earn cosmetics than when I started. Why would I disregard consistent improvement in an experience just to make baseless negative assumptions about the future?
They stayed consistent thus far so why wouldn't we head into 2021 with a positive outlook on things?
