Thoughts on current game state?

  • Hello Sea of Thieves forum users,

I wanted to get some idea of what the community thinks of the Sea of Thieves current state? The thing is, is that I have been a player with them since alpha, and to truly be honest I don't like where the game is right now. I feel the updates they release lack that special feel between on another.

Every update consist of fighting the same-o skeletons, and occasionally we get a different/bigger skeleton. This to me is rather boring for somebody like me that simply has played the game since release, and still not seen anything different in terms of enemies. Basically all loot in this game revolves around skeletons which is getting boring. I burned myself out of PvP to the point there is no more reason to fight people, I am max, seen everything there is. Even new updates don't make me get on anymore.

I recently got on to see the Halloween event, only to be let down again with a FOTD boss, but with lower health.

Absolutely no hate to the people at Rare, but this to me just seems lazy. I see more content updates in the emporium rather than the game itself. I understand that is their main source of income for people that already bought the game. But why buy something from a game that doesn't add any content in return?

Like I truly don't care what it is, something else than skeletons and repeated content. Seeing copy pasted things over and over again upsets me a bit. Seeing a game that has great art style and potential only to occasionally add decent new things to the game.

  • I've been playing for 5 days and defeated FOTD 5 times already and it doesn't feel epic anymore, so I'm going to give you my two cents.

    Negative aspects of the game:

    1. No progression
While being tied to game-philosphy, it is easy to lose motivation without progression. All you can buy is skins. A rather difficult issue, as it is tied to the game philosophy.

    2. Gold is worthless
Gold is the main resource of the game, and it is worthless. You can only buy skins (and flags for 20k). Why not add a price to tall-tales? After all there is no reason for the mysterious stranger to give you the fabled book from the pirate legend himself. But for a "small" donation he would be willing to share his information.
Many pirates want cosmetics to be repairable, but doing such a thing is not easy and requires craftsmanship. Sadly, the lady at the outpost has better things to do than to repair strangers ships for nothing.

    3. Repetitiveness
It's skeleton time, all the time! Add ghouls, vampires, sirens, jelly-fish, turtles, dolphins, crabs. Pick up some ancient creatures and make them (mini) bosses. Hydras, Moby D*ck, giant crabs, giant turtles, cyclopses.

    4. Lacking PVP
The best PVP interaction you can get in this game is grouping up with another crew and not knowing wether you can trust them or not. Add bounties to players that kill or sink ships often.
(Opinions differ on this subject, but having more ships/players on one server would be nice IMHO.)

    5. Spawnkilling
Getting killed right after spawning is just unfair and frustraiting. Gives us at least a second of protection after spawning.

Now what is great about this game:

    1. Social interaction
Most of my encounters with other players were at least sportsmanship-like or great. Playing a song together as my crewmate places his first ritual skull on for FOTD made it a special moment for everyone.

    2. Equality
Everyone is equal upon the waves, (mostly) only skill matters.

    3. Great Artstyle
      I like it.

    4. "Random" things to do
There are lots of actions that aren't needed. Dancing, singing, fishing, puking and getting drunk. Nice.

    5. Ferry of the Damned
The Ferry is kind of special in this game, as it connects to the "living world" via flames. I really like that.

  • This game is designed to provide you with the tools to make your own fun. Progression, loot, skeletons, ghost ships, skelly ships, megaladon's, krakens, and etc are all things to add elements of surprise to what you have decided to do.

Nothing beats a three way naval battle that gets interrupted by two skelly ships and a kraken.

  • Just started the latest update for the 1st time this evening. Game effectively crashed, because it never left the finding crew ledger loading screen. Upon restart, I successfully joined a friend, and couldn't purchase any more ancient coins because the purchase screen stalled. Though I was able to cancel that, moments after leaving the shop, my game completely locked up, with sound continuing as if nothing had happened.

None of the ancient coin packs are available in the emporium, nor in the Xbox store.

The Hunter's Call pets have no chat options available either.

Not off to a good start this update, Rare... 🙄

  • I think if you're a new player or a casual gamer this game is at an awesome stage of its existence

    For me specifically

    alt text

I still have unfinished business to tend to before I can retire

    alt text

  • The game is designed to give u a little more every month to entertain u for those 4 weeks rinse repeat. And honestly i like this style, but the problem with it is when that content stops coming old content gets really old really quickly. So i fear for the game if rare cant pick up theirs.

  • Right now we’re getting minimal content every 2 months.

Like really fate of the damned adds nothing, it just gives new limited time rewards for doing old achievements.

And vaults of the ancients is just bits of code and designs stuck together

  • I think the current state is awesome.

    I wouldn’t change a thing.

But hell, I like pirate games. I’ve been playing Sid Myers since I had a Commodore 64!

Would have played Black Flag but I couldn’t Stand the dude jumping on everything like a damn spider monkey and the camera angle
Didn’t work for me. (In Ship to Ship).

  • @likeamikelp You really sound like someone who has been playing for 5 days.

  • The updates are fine. There's nothing overly terrible about them, it's just that they don't have any lasting appeal. At this point, the only reason I'd do a vault is for either a new player or to get the commendations done. However, the problem arises when all of the content isn't exiting or interesting after a week. The Ashen Lords were an interesting gimmick, but I didn't have any drive to complete them because a) they were too difficult to do myself b) nobody I played with wanted to do them either. There have been improvements in the game since I've been playing, which was three days to the year now. The most important and long lasting stuff in this game were the things that just sit in the background. Sure, vaults are flashy, but the firebomb has made quite an impact on the game since its release. When Fate of the Damned is done, it won't have added much to the overall Sea of Thieves experience. I want small things that would continue to add to the game for years to come, instead of one big flashy thing that nobody would use after the update is over.
Another thing that I believe the developers should consider is making bimonthly updates. This sounds like a terrible thing, but Rare is approaching that timeline already. This way, the developers would have more time to work on large, quality updates instead of one thing a month. I know the devs promised a year of monthly content updates, and they've already done that. How about they slow down, work hard, and make some big updates that people won't complain about after a week? If need be, they could have a sub-update in the middle, filled with challenges associated with the new content or something. Or they could make us fish 500 ruby splashtails, for 250 ancient coins or something.
Also, can you believe they don't have bread in the game? Hardtack was a necessity to pirates on the high seas, and was somewhat edible. Why not have it in the game? It wouldn't be good, but it would be cheap and easy to have. I can't have my pirate actually get his vitamin C by eating fruits all the time, right?
Of course, I'm not a game developer. I don't know anything about how to make this game. I'm just saying what I've been thinking. I'm ready to see how I'm wrong in response to my essay.

  • This game has become a major fail and myself and family/friends have abandoned ship! Even more so with the announcement of private lobby/server coming in near future won’t have progression! While some millennial minded gamers (and developers) feel that “no risk, no reward” is a core value of the game, they are losing the player base of folks who dont have the time to sit in mommy’s basement and play for hours to only get yanked/grieved! Not by “professional” pvpers but by troll kids with no life. Most grown folks don’t have that kinda time on hand to waste. Not ones with families and real jobs who want to plunder and experience the game casually!

To implement this it would be simple....

Make private server progression separated from online mode (current adventure mode). Literate creates for offline/private server/invite only session would only have progression locked to that pirate profile! It would separate from the current version now! Simple enough right?

Maybe perhaps make a PvP sea mode only and a PvE sea mode only. Simple enough right?

Bottom line, people (grown folks) would love to play this game without the toxic gamer generations that are starting to hatch!! I know I speak for many out there who have come home from work or played on there free time, spent a great deal of time working on commendations or time sensitive events and have encountered kids who who continue to grieve you!! Kill you, keep your boat afloat, kill you when you spawn in, kill you again when you spawn in... keep killing you when you spawn in... now you lost hours of work, loot, any form of progression... gone! That sorta gameplay is not tolerable! And for the devs to think that’s ok and that’s part of the game is flat out a joke!! Hence why I and many of my family and friends quit playing this garbage!! Terrible dev team and waste of time this game is!!

The funny thing is they don’t realize the money they are losing out on! Many of us have talked about the fact we would spend money in emporium for the cosmetics if we could just play invite only with friends!

It’s a shame to see such a good game go to waste due to poor bloody leadership and development!

  • @doomscorp they are killing their game slowly, especially with announcing private servers only for community events for tubers. They would make some much more revenue adding a invite only/private session to the game!!

Many people will come back to the game and therefore increasing chances for them to spend money to decorate their ship and pirate, I myself would be one of them.

The devs need to get off the high horse about the whole “no risk, no reward” mentality. Game is fun, they need to accommodate for all player base types.... not just the griefing toxic millennials! These newer generation of gamers are poisonous to the gaming community, trolls don’t just exist in Sea of Thieves, they are everywhere!

  • @r34p3r82 Ahoy matey!

Private servers will be available to everyone once they have been fully tested and launched, they will not be a restricted to streamers or "tubers".

  • @r34p3r82

Like @Musicmee stated private servers are will become available to everyone.

Second of all talk for yourself and stop hiding behind excuses, i have a full time job (40 hours) go to evening classes (20+ hours) am married, working on the getting children part. And play about once a week, 2 times tops and i can defend myself just fine and even steal quite some loot from pvp encounters.

Its funny that you call the opposing side (the more pvp inclined side) all sorts of names and say that RARE needs to come of their high horse... all the while you are the one that knowingly purchased a PvEvP game and are demanding they change that CORE game philosophy....

It would be like purchasing a Car at the BMW dealership and then complaining that you received a BMW instead of a ford

  • @aussei for the sake of me wanting my ideas to not go unseen I'm just going to copy and paste my thread here

    Meaningful rewards.

Once you have more than enough gold, it becomes kind of meaningless to get more. As every cosmetic more or less costs the same, having your favorite outfit sometimes makes the whole experience of making a ton of money kind of dull. I understand that the fun is in the adventure and whatnot, but a drive and desire for that gold would actually push people to want to go out and grind. Here are just some ideas that I think are cool, I'm not claiming they're great ideas, I just think that they would be interesting:

    • Having certain things be obtainable only if you have beaten a certain boss, questline, w/e
    • Having non-market cosmetics spawning as rewards for certain rare chests, or having lower-tier cosmetics as a chance of reward for lower-tier chests
    • Shipmate AI, i.e hiring a bard NPC who will play music for you as you sail, and you can join him if you want, or hiring a prisoner AI for your brig who will tell you jokes if you give him food, or something stupid.

    Variation in enemies/random events

Jeez, I know land combat isn't really the focus on this game, but it grows tiresome just fighting different variations of skeletons over and over and over. Even the bosses are typically wizard skeletons. This isn't the worst thing ever, but it would be sick as hell if there were different things to fight. Just some stupid ideas I can rattle off:

    • A big scary snake, dude.
    • A giant crab. How cool would it be to fight a giant grab that hordes gold or something?
    • I honestly think that the Kraken needs a buff. Not to say it wasn't a cool experience, but me and my buddy on a sloop fought him off. I feel like it'd be a more cool and scary experience if it meant almost certain-death for anyone who isn't a full galleon that tries to fight it instead of running.
    • Maybe make some kind of native cannibal population on some of the islands that will try and fight you off? Or maybe not.
    • A rare random encounter where a sailor who is found at sea on a board or something will reward you with an OP map if you drop him off at a certain island
    • Bounties? To add another use for a brig? Just an idea. Like you'd chase and/or damage them enough that they fall down, then you can pick them up princess-style similar to an in-game pet or something. Lol. Not sure how this would work, but an interesting idea.
    • Sirens? Witcher 3-like sirens which fly and try and nab at you

    World

    • I think a larger island would be pretty cool. I know that it's literally a pirate game, but exploring some of the larger islands has been extremely fun, and I think having one very large island would be a pretty sweet idea. I'd say a majority of the islands are very, very small, and often feel so empty and soulless.
    • Having NPC ships other than skeleton ships would be cool. Like fighting other pirates, or having OP British Navy ships that have a lot of spice crates/whatever on them, but them being very dangerous? Just cool ideas

    Upgrade-able improvements

There's not really a sense of progression in this game, once you get everything it's more like a story game. I know this one's kind of hit or miss, considering that the game intends to put new and experienced players on an even playing field. but it would be cool to see some things that will give you a sense of progression:

    • Harpoons that shoot a few feet further.
    • Masses that can turn a little faster.
    • Sniper scopes that actually have a reticle
    • Upgraded stock which would give you a little more than the default food whenever you start a session.
    • Adjustable telescope that could zoom out a little further.
  • @galactic-geek said:

The Hunter's Call pets have no chat options available either.

I discovered the reason behind this issue - apparently my input was changed in the controls menu. I discovered this when I couldn't use chat with any pet, and when I couldn't choose a shanty, or stow anything away. 🙄

  • Hello all,

Sorry for not responding to these posts! Turns out I wasn't getting notified to them and decided to check today. And being honest with you, I am really happy about attention this has gotten.

I made a few posts before a little bit about this, however, they didn't get much interaction so seeing what others think puts a smile on my face.

I agree with what people are saying here. As a player who has played before launch and seeing this game turn up like this focusing more on paid cosmetics and not focusing on people actually playing not paying is disappointing.

This game has a ton of potential and great artwork. Rare has all the tools and foundations, just not seeing them use it.

Going off what someone else said in here, I think holding off on these monthly updates and focus on one big update every 2/3 months with content that will last, versus currently, where I can barely play more than 2 hours.

I would like to see less repeated content, etc.

Glad to see I wasn't the only one, my goal for this forum wasn't to bash the dev's, however, I would like them to see this and take it into consideration. I feel like its only a matter of time before the new players, too, grow bored of this game.
