Two gold-sink ideas

  • Hello mateys,

Decided to drop by and provide my suggestions on what I consider suitable additions to the game.

As we all know a lot of people are seeing gold as something which is rather pointless, and that's a problem, as gold is one of the (already few) progressions in Sea of Thieves.

Personally to me (and I believe the game's actual intention) is not to progress, but to create and involve yourselves in different kinds of adventures with every separate session you play. But gold is there anyway, why not allow a few perks and more ways of having fun while spending it?

    1. Spend gold to become a skeleton ship.

This one is my favourite! Imagine being so blood-thirsty, that you are willing to sacrifice your plunder, and flesh, in order to become a skeleton on an underwater ship, and emerge next to a player ship to fight it! Of course, you will have limited control over this new ship, your movement (can't leave the ship), and arsenal, as the idea is to rather have fun, than mindlessly execute other players. Such skelly ships can reward an excessive amount of rewards, which can also increase based on how many player ships it has sunk.

    2. Allow the purchase of ship provisions (planks, cannonballs, fruits) for limited amount of time (10min?) after joining a new session.

Would be good if we could just log and sail away, rather than having to spend 5-10 minutes drying out the given outpost. Now, I can see how this could be a problem in the heat of battle, where a ship is about to lose due to low provisions, and just hops to an outpost to purchase some, then continues until infinity. So this feature should only be available for a limited amount of time, when you're freshly spawned.

I like the first idea. I've had thoughts of being a skeleton captain with my own skelleon. A sort of separate game mode that still puts you in adventure servers but with a completely different style of play.

The second idea I feel is flawed. I've thought about how a system like that would work for a long time, and unfortunately anything that gives you an advantage at the start of your session will likely incentivize people to server hop. This will throw fuel on the fire of an already existing server merge problem. Server merges have always been a difficult thing to get to work right and recently they seem to have gotten worse. If people are in a bad position, and they know if they find a new server they will have an advantage, then they will take it. Crews will be created and disbanded at a higher frequency and servers will have a harder time struggling with keeping them all filled.

The best thing I can think of is have someone sell empty storage crates, but even that feels unnecessary when they are so abundant. At least storage crates would still leave in the task of collecting and stocking your ship instead of automatically doing it for you somehow, and you can't sell them. At the end of the day though, I feel like that is just a form of buying power. You spend gold to get an advantage over other crews and that goes against the idea behind the game.

  • Rare definitely need inflate the importance of gold. I don't even bother picking up most loot anymore. (Although I will pick up an Athena Chest if it doesn't mean going out of my way.)

It's not that I own all the cosmetics. But I own all the one's that I want.

Boarding a 'skelleon' would definitely spice up adventure gameplay. There are so many fun things that can be sewed into this, I do believe we're only scratching the surface of the potential. Anyway I'm glad to find out we feel the same about this.

And about being able to purchase resources, it's not really power that you receive, only a faster start. If you've played enough, and got enough gold which you don't mind spending on this, I don't see a problem. The only way this system could potentially give you direct power is if you're in the middle of a battle and run out of resources, then quickly kite through an outpost to purchase some. This is why you should only be able to purchase resources in the first 10ish minutes after you log onto this server.

Honestly, as I mentioned, I really don't think the idea of the game is to farm gold and purchase stuff, so much as it's about enjoying the 'adventure of today'.

But yeah, having some more stuff to spend gold on (different from cosmetics) can definitely bring more fresh air into the game.

  • @greengrimz I like where your head's at. As you said, everyone agrees that abundance of gold is an issue. And I think spending gold to unlock new, single-session play experiences is a fantastic solution. Manning your own skelleon could be cool and I can think of a dozen other play experience ideas that would get me super stoked to start saving that $$$.

You are right. The grind is just that, a grind to nowhere. SoT's is all about the experiences that you have/make along the way.

I am maxed out in levels and have uncountable amounts of gold and doubloons. But I still play SoT sometimes because every adventure is unique.

Still, if I could buy something cool (like my own ship design) for 50 million gold, that would give me something to work towards. And I would probably play more often.

Yeah, there's lots of potential indeed, especially in Sea of Thieves, due to its nature. God I love this game.
