How to deal with the kraken?

  • I tend to play this game solo, as games that are co-op in nature like this I prefer to play only with friends (and I don't have many that were interested in this). So- while doing the RDICULOUSLY LONG gilded voyage (like seriously, it took me like 5 hours, and all voyages STILL have to be done in one sitting psst please change this), I'd completed two of 8 objectives and cashed in the loot (which turned out to be a really smart move). After digging up all the treasure for my third one, I'd barely raised anchor when I suddenly seem to stop moving and ta-dah, the kraken appears. So I really have no idea how to handle this. I tried firing cannonballs at the tentacles (which is easier said than done because they're narrow and squirmy), i tried shooting at it, i tried using the harpoons (which seem to just bounce/not hit it), nothing seems to have any effect. Eventually I run out of boards etc. and just have to abandon ship/suicide.

Is there a way out of this? Is it possible to survive this encounter solo? How do I deal with this? it feels a little unfair for something that is entirely unpredictable to just basically take all your loot away (but hey at least I earned an achievement later for someone else finding the treasure and turning it in...)

Is there any clues as to where a kraken might be or if it's about to appear?

  • @alhanelem the kraken is quite easy once you know how to deal with it, which there are two ways to do so:

1 - running from the kraken: if you want to run away from the kraken do a 180 as soon as you hear the music/see the ink come up. Because at this point after the turn you are closest to the edge of the ink, keep going in that direction and you will be out in no-time.

2 - fighting the kraken: on a sloop this is also incredibly easy once you know what to do, as a slooper you only need to defeat two of its tentacles, focus on one at a time with cannon fire, a tentacle is defeated it will wave violently in the air and give an audio que it takes about 5 cannonballs to defeat a tentacle. Defeating it as a slooper is usually faster then running from it.

If a tentacle wraps you you can get rid of it by shooting the short tentacle head that pops up close to your ship

@CallMeBackdrafT is right. If you can escape the ink, you are safe, and the closest edge is right behind you at the start of the battle. 180 turn your ship, stay below deck so you don't get sucked off, and hope it doesn't wrap you. If it does wrap you, use the cannon to shoot the shorter tentacle right in front of one of your cannons, that's the head of the tentacle wrapped around your ship and damaging it enough will make it let go. It might move back and forth to each side of your ship as you damage it so just continue to play whack-a-mole with it until it unwraps.

Hide below deck any time it tries to pull you off. Some people say grabbing something like the sails, the helm, or the cannons will prevent you from being sucked up but I've seen otherwise. Always go below deck and wait for it to stop.

Its third attack is when it smacks your ship. Just be sure to repair when this happens and adjust course if you are trying to sail away.

Cannonballs are the way to go. Guns can be used but they take much much longer.

  • If you don't want to deal with the Kraken, keep an eye on the skies and only sail when there's a Skull Fort or Fleet cloud up. The Kraken can only attack when these aren't happening, so if there are no clouds wait near an island until there are.

The Fort of the Damned is separate to this, so make sure one of the other clouds is also in the sky.

  • @alhanelem
As @CallMeBackdrafT pointed out, when fighting a kraken solo in a sloop, you need to defeat 2 tentacles and each tentacle needs to be hit with 5 cannonballs. Once you master this you will be able to defeat the kraken in under 30 seconds with only 10 cannonballs.

An additional tip if you are having trouble hitting the tentacles... Aim just below the waterline. The tentacle doesn't move below the waterline so it is easier to hit.

One final note, the kraken will only spawn if there isn't a red skull cloud or a red ship cloud in the sky. So if you have a lot of loot and are concerned about the kraken, look for the red skull cloud or the red ship cloud and then you know you are safe from the kraken.

That's really good to know, thanks!
