Crew Size Workarounds

  • So I joined the game with 2 friends a few nights ago and we're not very experienced yet but from what we've ascertained the 3 ships are tiered as:

    Sloop - Solo/Duo
    Brig - 3-man
    Galleon - 4-man

So we've been entering the game in a Brig. What we're wondering though is are we able to start a 3-man game with a Galleon or Sloop? Initially we actually wanted to be a 3 in a Sloop because it was small and would be easy to sail with 3 people. Can you actually pick what you start in? And can you have crews too large for certain ships? Because it seems really stupid that you can't have a 3 or 4 in a Sloop. Maybe people just want to be small, quiet and inconspicuous? A smaller ship with a large crew would also surely equal very easy to sail and maintain.

Another question... If we don't specifically spawn in together as a crew and just enter the game individually but agree to meet at X outpost in front of X tent, as it's open world surely we'll run into each other right? So why can't we just from there hop onto someones Sloop?

  • @myrmidonnn It’s broken down like this:

    Sloop: 1-2
    Brigantine: 1-3
    Galleon: 1-4

That’s what’s possible. In terms of what’s manageable, it’s best to do 2 or 3 on a Brig and 3 or 4 on a Galleon. Full crews are ideal. You can solo any of them, the difficulty in ship management by one person increases dramatically from the sloop to the Galleon, though.

The ship crew sizes are a balancing mechanism for the ship types. Each ship type has its pluses and minuses to try to best balance types against one another - crew size being one aspect of that.

If you enter the game separately, it’s unlikely you will all end up on the same server.

You can start a Galleon also with 3 (or less) and a Brigantine with 1-3.
Can't start a sloop with more than 2 or a brigantine with more than 3.

There are several servers with up to 6 ships each. You have a small chance to end up on the same server as your friend(s).
