Will the Rare keep supporting the game after lunch?

  • Hey there!

In the "Sea of Thieves - Progression Stream" ( minute 39-41) the creators of Sea of Thieves say that they will keep updating the game after launch. Do you believe that's true? Will there be DLC's?

  • They may take a nap after lunch but I'm sure they will keep updating the game. Maybe even after diner, who knows?

  • @nevadahund39926

Rare’s roadmap is planned out to take them all the way to 2019 with updates. So as long as the community and game thrives post launch, I’m positive game updates will keep coming.

  • One of the main things to consider, and to fully be revealed what this exactly means, is that Rare and Microsoft are looking at Sea of Thieves with a "games as a service" model. This means that there will be regular content and other updates that are released on a "schedule" of sorts, and that the concept of the traditional "launch" might not necessarily be accurate as the game will only continue to expand from there. This may include more traditional DLC and expansions, but likely will have smaller more regular updates as well.

Think more in line with something like Overwatch, though a very different genre, with regular updates and patch notes but that also brings in new characters, events, or other content fairly regularly.

  • @jediknightxiii
Do you forsee it being a micro transaction based update system?

  • What are we having for lunch?

  • @capta1n-cr0ss 2019 is quite short. That's 1 - 1,5 year. Even EA/DICE is supporting Battlefield 1 for a longer time.

I hope Rare will support Sea of Thieves till 2023 or longer.

  • @gulpee-rex

That is how long their roadmap will take them. It's not to say they won't add more on later.

  • Just hope they don’t get carried away with micro transactions.

  • They’ve already been hammered with micro transaction questions. I doubt they’ll do it. At most, I would think that larger expansions may require payment. But that’s more in line with what Halo and other games like Skyrim did back in the day. Big DLC required payments and that’s understandable. Do I think they’ll implement true micro transactions? No lol. Most games with micro transactions these days are seen as a model of “pay to win”. We already know that sea of thieves is far from that. We’ll probably get weekly event updates and perhaps expansion packs. Y’all shouldn’t worry so much about micro transactions. They only got attention because developers made those transactions amount to success in-game. The purpose of your gold in-game, as far as I know, is to purchase new cosmetics.

  • they said they would, but realistically speaking it all depends on how much they sell, if the game sells under a million copies there wont be any support, if it sells 4 or 5 mil there will be

also the "we'll keep updating the game" bit is mostly because the game has a very small amount of content, fanboys will say "it's an alpha" but they dont have any proof either, so let them hope and dream. they will focus on adding proper content after release, that way they can start making some money during development with the game already released

  • @jimmy-breeeeze as longs as its cosmetic loot boxes!

  • @nevadahund39926 well i mean i hope they support the game after lunch. Theres still a few more hours of work after that!

  • There's plenty of stuff coming after launch it definitely should take them beyond 2019!

  • I'll just leave this here...
Behind the Scenes - Live Campaigns

  • I personally believe that like most games, Rare will keep updating the game and every now and then giving us users some new DLCs. But as they (hopefully) Create new franchises and games, they may draw from Sea of Thieves a little bit.

  • I honestly would rather see this be a subscription based game then a micro transaction........ the whole pay to win thing is annoying and is a super hot topic right now

If the game has to go in one of those two directions I think a lot of use would rather see it be subscription based.

  • @drbullhammer @Zombie-P1ague seeing as they don't want any items to give an advantage in game this seems reasonable.

  • @drbullhammer I understand that but look at destiny all the things behind a pay wall are just cosmetic.

But you get to a point when the only thing new coming out is stuff to be purcheased behind the paywall, and all cosmetics are only found in the “lootboxes”
I don’t want a virtual slot machines for my real money only to have a chance of getting what I want. I want a real game where I can grind. That’s where the fun is it’s about the challange and the struggle to grind out and play.

  • @zombie-p1ague
From everything they have said about the game, it is unlikely that they would keep all content behind microtransactions.

  • @drbullhammer if it is like over watch I would be okay with it actually

  • @jediknightxiii I am assuming the smart choice would be using the GUILDWARS model, buying the expansions like you said

  • @chosen-predator yes the guild wars model is just perfect, no monthly fee, just the game and the ability to purchase ingame currency.
