Add stuff with intention

  • Hello everyone,

As it stands, the Eternal Guard is the most recent addition in terms of semi reused content. We got this addition used just twice with no real proper addition to the game. Rare, things need to be added with intention that they will be relavant in the future. Think the storage crate, that has intention in the sense that it is used every day!

For example, for some odd reason the Eternal Guard does not have a voyage respective to it. This should make sense because it would be a good voyage to have faction based loot, or just.. a semi sized Eternal Guard vault.

Things need longevity, something that keeps players engaged. What I've noticed is that recent additions usually don't get used after the initial "excitement" phase.

I hope you read this feedback and take consideration, I look forward to all your responses. Have a great day!

  • Believe it or not, the Guard has intention.

    1. New emergent encounter (like a mermaid statue or a skeleton captain). More reasons to explore instead of diving.

    2. Gives a key for a vault on another island. Gives a reason to stay on the server, rather than go dive again.

    3. The vaults are only in the Roar, thus giving players who got the key outside of it a reason to go to the Roar.

  • @drbensei That's fair, but like most recent additions, you lose interest in doing it. There needs to be a bit more replayability.

  • That's like 90% of SoT.

You didn't plan to go to the Roar? Then you probably won't even attempt it. You have different plans and see an Ancient Meg? Then you probably see it more as a hazard than content to engage with. You are doing something else and killed a skeleton captain, and don't need more supplies? Then you might not even dig up the chest.

But as long as these things give you a tool, people will see value in it and get back to it eventually. I didn't do Skeleton Forts or Skeleton Fleets for quite some time, but grind them now to get Doubloons for the commemorative items. The Eternal Guard gives you the strongest weapon item currently in the game if you go through the trouble of doing it. The Chest of Bones voyage gives you permanent skeleton npcs in a box on demand. The Meg's purpose is to be a hazard, etc.

  • @drbensei Those have intention, the Guard just feels a bit like... it's hard to describe.

    1. You have to find one of these, this has RNG issues. Leading to boredom.

    2. Unlike the Eternal Guard, The Skeleton forts and fleets are quite fun to do and are replayable, they also grant access to certain items that are good. The Eternal guard does the same in terms of items, but it's a reskinned trident with some flare.

    3. I don't think most of the content lacks intention. I just feel this kind of does, and I don't think many of us want a slippery slope of Rare falling into giving us content that has no intention.

I get your point though :).

  • I understand that you are not particularly excited for the Eternal Guard. That's fine, the game has so much to offer. It's okay to like some content more than others. But for the reasons I already stated, saying it has no intent is false. It clearly tries to offer something other content doesn't.

Also "You have to find one of these" only leads to boredom when you're trying to rush commendations. While Rare made them less grindy, commendations are meant to be longterm goals, not a monthly checklist. Treat them like emergent skeleton captains: Do them if you need the loot and tools they give or if they give you an advantage. Everything will bore you if you limit your adventure to a single game loop. And they are not meant to be a divable Boss Raid.
I actually think designing stuff just around commendations is the opposite of "designing for intent". If something is only interesting because of a checklist, it's not good game design.

  • @drbensei Yeah, you've provided good points here, I think you're right. But I think what I'm trying to say is it feels like Rare won't update or use this boss in future updates. It's only been used twice. That's what I mean by lacking "intention", I should have clarified.

  • most recent additions, you lose interest in doing it

Same with storage crate. I lost interest buying them when I can get 1-3 crates for free by sailing

Everything has an interest depending on other players needs and wants. Could also use the eternal guard as distraction when your on same island.
