flares are good for shadow skellies and for encounters with other players
I don't gather them but I use mine every session.
As someone that only fights people that want to fight me I think flares are awesome in the organic experience. Pvers often use them and it lets me know to leave them alone when they maintain space.
Way better than alliance flags.

Flares work just as good as fireworks with setting fires, the problem with fireworks is half of them zigzag or spray all over the place in an amazingly spectacular but untactical fashion. I want a consistent, fast, straight-shooting rocket to shoot at the "enemy" ship.
Or they could add incendiary-explosive rockets to the game. Imagine a flare that explodes with the force of a keg.. that would be insanely fun and OP.
But regardless of wether you use flares for declaring war, peace, shadow skellies, or setting people on fire, there's enough of a market for them that they should sell a box of 50 red or white flares at every merchant for like 3,500 gold
