Remove the names but not the titles to deal with stream sniping

  • It chafes me in bad places when I see streamers complain about stream sniping, but then see them listening to viewers telling them someone "tucked" on their ship.

Honestly, I used to play Rust with a fairly big streamer. That is a game where you choose the server you go to. It is also one of the most "toxic" games I have played in terms of the playerbase.

It took zero effort to snipe in that game, and we never complained about the hundreds, if not thousands of people that "came at us" because of the stream.

It seems logical to me that if I broadcast my location to the masses that the information I am providing willingly will be used against me. I should be ready and prepared for that.

Instead of running around on ships quite literally covered in loot, I should be turning in more frequently (except in this game, it really isn't that easy to stream snipe -- it takes more work than most games). I should have supplies to fight off an attack.

What I would never do is demand that players that were sniping be banned. Being stream sniped just comes with the territory.

What you really can't do is complain that someone is sniping you, and listen to the "extra eyes" watching your stream.

    @bran-the-ent sigh

    Tell me about it... sigh.

    https://www.polygon.com/2017/7/30/16059138/playerunknowns-battlegrounds-stream-sniping-ban

What does this prove? It turns out the individual in question was stream sniping. Doesn't prove the statement "It is a known fact that it doesn't happen often at all."

    https://www.reddit.com/r/PUBATTLEGROUNDS/comments/6qcn2e/as_a_streamer_stream_sniping_is_a_massive_problem/

This also doesn't prove the statement "It is a known fact that it doesn't happen often at all."

Do streamers occasionally call out stream sniping when it isn't? Sure. But this doesn't support your claim.

You are extrapolating from a subsection and assuming that it applies across the board. This is a logical fallacy and a weak argument.

So the main issue with stream sniping is that everyone who is a streamer things they are being stream sniped.

Again, this is a logical fallacy. What is true for individuals in a group doesn't necessarily apply to the whole group.

Case in point is that one guy who says he gets stream sniped 6 times day going onto explain HOW he knows he is.

Yeah... one guy. How does this point to it being a "known fact" that stream sniping "doesn't happen often at all"? It doesn't.

The thing about cheating is everyone who dies or loses thinks hacks are invovled.

    Do you? I don't.

So what are the numbers of people actually getting stream sniped? There aren't any.

None?! It never happens?! It's all just a fiction?! Okay... done. This has now become a delusional fantasy on your part.

Wow. Live the dream, friend... live the dream.

    I'm out.

    EDIT: Heh.

This guys whole post right here...

He's talking about the "hundreds, if not thousands of people" that stream sniped. You sure he's not just making that up, as you claim streamers do? You're all over the place, dude. I mean... wow. I blink at you.

  • @fluidsc we just need a Pirate Name Creator, I would change my GT but Ive had it for years now. It would be cool if they solved the stream sniping issue just by allowing us to create names for our pirates.

  • @bran-the-ent Called it. Knew you wouldn't actually bring anything to table. You sir are just a waste of time.

It proves you didn't read the article. The person in question said he was not stream sniping and gave video evidence that he was not. See you don't actually read.

If streamers call out stream sniping when there really isn't that completely supports my claim. It means they will throw accusations out like crazy when they aren't being stream sniped.

Let me ask you something, can you actually prove that stream sniping is an actual issue? That it happens as often as people say it does? That it is detrimental to streamers? No you can't.

Next the guy was talking about rust which again if you read before hand I mention in the same post that you quoted, that some games just have no preventable programs or support against hackers or anything. Rust is one of those games.

So, yeah you are a waste of time. Thank you.

  • @xultanis-dragon Lol. You're welcome?

No, you're saying if a few streamers occasionally make inaccurate claims of stream sniping, then all streamers must do the same thing all the time. That is a fallacy of composition - something is true for part of the whole and therefore must be true for the entirety - and a hasty generalization rolled up into one. That's fallacious reasoning (flawed logic), Mr. I'm on the Logical Side.

I didn't read the article?! Nowhere, and I mean nowhere does it state, allude to, insinuate, or even hint at the notion that the banned streamer provided video evidence that he wasn't stream sniping.

If the guy was telling the truth and doesn't even watch Twitch, how did he end up consistently attempting to end up in the same lobby as those particular streamers? Game data don't lie, friend.

ahem (read the entire article... it doesn't say what you think it does.)

Live the delusional dream, friend. Toodles.

  • @bran-the-ent Yup.....thats on me....linked the wrong article. For that I apologize.

sniff I'll miss you high horse....sniff.....

Also just a heads up for anything having problems, I had to install firefox to get back into the forums for some reason. For the past couple of weeks I've been having problems posting or accessing my profile. Couldn't find out why, switched to firefox and it works. Something going on with chrome, anyone got any ideas that would be awesome.

  • @tedakin I agree that title should stay but for entirely different reasons.

You can't even see someone's gamertag if they're under water so...

    https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/58929/patch-notes-discussion-1-0-7?page=1

Who Goes There? - When swimming underwater, gamertag and Player Titles are no longer visible. Now you can #BeMoresneakyPirate!

There is no difference for having the gamertag display toggled off.

  • You guys are far more passionate about this topic than you probably should be...

  • Easy solution - allow players to name their pirate. At the moment in the Pirate settings on the main menu you can only delete your pirate. Give players a place to name their pirate before they start a session so their pirate nameplate is that of a character name rather then a username.

    Except it could be abused...

    "Hi, I'm Captain 💩💩💩💩-in-your-face!"

See what I mean? It's easier to simply not include such a feature rather than to have to regulate it.

  • the way it works is, you turn off name plates and you cant see nameplates, everyone else can see yours fine. if you want to see name tags, dont turn them off

  • @xultanis-dragon
This is probably my favorite post on this website XD accusing all streamers of being bad at the game because they accuse people of stream sniping which does happen more often than you think and SoT only reports the hackers they actually catch and ban lol so your number are flawed in that aspect if they new the percentage of how many people were hacking they would know who was hacking :) .. your post has zero facts and is 100% opinion yet you try and throw out possibilities like you are giving out factual information. also that is a bold statement to say streamers are bad at Sea of Thieves
