Massive rubberbanding with no end in sight

  • Ahoy fellow pirates and hopefully Dev's!

I'm writing here because of an issue that I believe I have addressed in the past already. I have noticed some other threads where there was no response or solution. Thread The other thread was the guy finding the issue in his router.

Rubberband. In the beta and at release I have experienced it. I've then played with it for a few weeks and then dropped the game. Now I have picked it back up and still have the same issues. I run in a direction and I get teleported forward or backwards while running. Freeze midair or similar. I stop moving and get teleported another metre ahead.
This results in my falling of the ship more often than not. The ping usually spikes in these moments to 150+ up to 300+.
Also when jumping in the water it can happen that I get teleported to the ground (usually in shallow water) which results in me taking a chunk of damage.
And occasionally I have to wait for my inventory to become available for 1 and to up to 5 seconds.
These not time based but immediately after I launch. I don't have issues like this regularly in any other game except Path of Exile maybe, however those could and probably are entirely unrelated.

Since release I have changed both home and internet twice. My internet might not have been the best but now with 200/200 up and down I can scratch that off the list of potential issues. All home locations were in Austria however.

My PC is also above average with a i7 6700k, GTX 980 and 16GB DDR4.

I have also tried using a VPN, putting myself in various locations throughout Europe, with no luck.

I hope I can get this to the developers in some way. I sadly haven't seen anyone present a fix for this. I can't properly do PvP and am having issues in PvE with me teleporting around and hits not registering. Frankly if I have to live with it, so be it. Although I would like to be of help to my friends sometimes..

Thanks for reading and I hope I can get a heads-up from a developer that they have acknowledged this.

    Regards, Yoda

  • Check your drivers to be uptodate.

Personally changing my antivirus made a difference : was using avira and now avast, it made a noticeable difference in performances, though still not optimal.

  • There has been a lot of lag server side recently, I suspect it's because there is an influx of new players. When it isn't just me and it's my crew as well I know it's the server.

I don't use any antivirus and my drivers are up to date. Like I said this has been a thing for 10 months.

Oddly enough it has always just been me. Not sure if its the server in my case, however they could also play a part.

  • This sounds like your connection to the servers has terrible packet loss. The server is not getting your movement updates (or you aren't getting updates from the server) so it is constantly trying to reset you back to the position it thinks you should be.

If you can get the server IP, you may be able to run a tracert and ping to see what kind of packet loss you are getting.

  • @zormis I agree, i think the influx of players is hitting the servers hard

  • @jonavuka The issue is that the influx of players should only be hitting the login and matchmaking servers hard - once you're in a game, you should be insulated from that (unless there is an unreasonably high number of players joining and quitting the server).

The servers run poorly for the amount of players they are holding. There is definitely some optimization that needs to be done.

Any idea on how I could get an IP? Speaking of, what are the server locations anyway? Is there a list?

  • @avayoda There isn't a list, you'd have to use a program to figure out what the server IPs are; something like the windows command line utility 'netstat' or something like wireshark.

The Azure Server farm locations are listed here, but there is no specific IP information and no idea which ones are hosting Sea of Thieves services.

  • @avayoda For a very short time, Rare had this fixed on the server side. But then they issued a new update removing the Christmas themed stuff in early January. When they did that, the re-introduced a lot of old glitches in the game and this is one of them. Hopefully this is something that can be rectified with the new install on Feb 6th. We can always hope anyways.
