The reason player and ship cosmetics are so generic looking...

  • @logansdadtoo
I've said this on a different post, same subject.
What in the entire game is not cosmetic?
We asked for a new foe, they gave skelly crews different coloured eyepatches, cosmetic.
The entire progression rewards are yip cosmetic, legend rank again cosmetic.
My point is simple, in a very low content cosmetic based game any attempt to use "it's on cosmetic"to justify a clear money grab is blinkered. They had the large input of cash at launch that provided little so any addition should be free until we feel we've had our money's worth first.
And the argument "you don't have to buy it" is foolish as none of us should be considering paying for content.
This is Microsoft as well as rare remember and they've plenty money in the pot to use.

Would you care to explain why exactly the cosmetics are 'bad'?

  • @super-poopsy When rare announced micro transactions, they said that every thing would still be available while playing the game. Look it up.

@Admiral-Tweedle I know the reason is more that the reason Rare developed SoT was to have fun with friends not with the main purpose of getting money (I'm looking at you, EA and Activision!). I know because that's what the devs said they wanted out of this game. I like to think not every game company just creates game to get money

You know that becuase thats 'what they said' sigh

  • @drewbob7 Of course Rare made the game to have fun with your friends, but getting some additional funding here and there is just what they need to bring in some better quality content. I'll probably end up spending a few euros on one or two things, and then we'll see where that money goes. (most likely back into development i hope)

  • @Lo1-R3x
From the reddit AMA, which also happens to be the most recent source of information about how microtransactions will work in game (and, arguably, as vague as any other information Rare has released about it):

Question: Will pets only be able to be bought with microtransactions or can we use gold?
Answer: Joe: Pets are a post-launch feature that we're currently designing. We're considering all options and they're part of our ongoing service. We don't have plans for them to be bought with gold but we're looking at potential ways players could earn them.

So, your interpretation of that is that 'everything will be available in game', or am i missing some important bit of information which apparently only you are aware of?

Instead of spreading misinformation, as if this forum wasn't already filled with it, please start providing source about your claims, ty.

  • Cant wait to splash my cash.

Cosmetics cannot be classed as pay to win.

In a power game, no. In a vanity game, yes they are, but it's called pay-to-awe. This is not about winning battles of might and mayhem, but beauty and glamour.

How can a fancy new hat help you to win battles?

In a beauty contest the one with the most amazing hat wins.

Or the new pair of gloves that make you a better sailor?

If there are gloves that make your grip firmer, then the item is more than just a cosmetic. We need more of those. Items that have tactical value thorough situational dependencies.

The devs stated the MT will be purely cosmetic,...

Nothing is purely cosmetic, ever. Everything affects the gameplay somehow and in these type of games for example, they usually paint yet another target sign on your back especially when they are paired with tier based progression system coz it makes intentional and unintentional harassment more organised.

...so you do not need to purchase any 'paid' items at all & those that do is purely for aesthetics.

That's the classical paradox. Of course devs want you to buy their product over and over again. That's literally their business. Their job is to make sure they get the highest feasible income value with the lowest necessary effort possible. However, according to players the MTs were not meant to become the next gold standard. They were meant to be something optional, but yet again the nice idea became something else instead.

A beauty contest divided into freemium and premium, the sides are destined to clash with each other in a way that breaks the fun in the field. Premium should promote basic content, always, so that this type of clash doesn't happen. Hence premium currency is the only way to go if devs really want to keep the balance in the game and harassment down to minimum of harmless trolling.

Devs first thought that they can introduce an imbalanced skinner box between basic content and premium content with the pressure point heavily at the premium side, but they know why they should not go that path. EA tried it already.
