Chest of Sorrows not worth the trouble?

  • Is it me or did this chest used to give more gold ? In fact it seems like at some point all chests got nerfed. I can tell you that the chest sorrows needs to be worth more I found while soloing yesterday just sitting on an island I was decently close to an outpost and ofcourse it begins to rain and almost sunk twice on the way there just to get 800 gold.

  • @logandor Yeah it appears that all items got nerfed. Things were much better in the beta by memory.

  • @logandor It is atleast worth the reputation gain.
im used to get between 1.1k-1.4k for this one, guess you had bad RNG?

I say its definetly worth the trouble since you gain good rep from it!

  • i got something around 1500 for it, two days ago.

I agree it should be worth much more. I'd like to see it go for at least 1800 gold.

  • I got 1,290g for one I found on crooked masts yesterday. Although I'm not at all worried about gold at this point. It gave me good faction rep which is far more important to me.

  • @logandor Maybe it is because it was just sitting there as a bonus and not an actual quest.

  • Rare has to slow down the people. Too much get too fast on legend state. So all other has to grind more and more. Rare need more time for stupid ideas like a 4-man sloop. SoT also called Grind of Doom

Maybe but it's not the first time I've seen it below 1k yesterday was just the lowest I've ever gotten for it.

  • When I think about it, Chest of Sorrow and Chest of A Thousand Grogs seem to be very scarce lately. I think I have only seen one Sorrow chest and no Grog chests in the past three weeks.

Not sure if my levels have anything to do with it. 35/33/30

  • I've been saying this since patch 1.02/1.03 and i'm glad that someone else has mentioned it!
I even asked Pro1gyX when he was streaming his last few hours to Legend and he wasn't sure.

I remember Captain's chests giving a solid 1000 gold every time almost, as well as Seafarer's being close to 400/500 and Marauder's being aroudn the 700/800 mark. I even dropped of a sorrows and grog in week one for around the 1500 mark.

Now you I seem to hit the following:
    Castaway - 60 - 80 gold
    Seafarer's - 250 - 400 gold
    Marauder's - 300 - 700 gold
    Captain's - 700 - 1000 gold

The higher ranges are MUCH less often the case i must add! Maybe the RNG Gods just aren't happy at the moment?!

But aren't the two intrinsically linked? Don't they calculate the rep gains based on the gold?

  • @admiral-rrrsole I see one or the other just about every other day.Everyone seems to have different experiences Like I've seen the Kraken several times my friend who's been playing since launch just as I have still hasn't seen it and even jokes that it doesn't exist.

  • @logandor That's strange. Maybe different servers?

I have no idea if the two are related in any way. Even if they are, it's all progress on the commendations which also gives you rep.

    Not sure I agree.

Given that the later rep can be hard to get for some (I've heard horror stories about the late Merchant quests), and the fact that they are gating the new content on legendary status, I would say the opposite is true.

What's the point of shiney new things if only a handful of players can use them? Especially when those new shinies are the "fix" to content problems such as, yep, that rep grind.

  • @mrosterman I don´t know but i feel the same like many other. The reward for the chest and the fort is imo lower than at release. I reached now 41/35/36 and i have no fun with the grind of doom in this game.

I played 2 days to get from lvl 40 to 41. This wasn´t fun this was only brainafk and sailing from one empty island to an other. Make your own adventure? Yea i feel really like a pirate. Brainless and stupid on a senseless journey for worthless stuff.

  • The special chests should be worth twice their current value. Whats exciting about finding a PITA chest that isn't worth more than a captain's chest?

  • i only got it for the achievement,
just another really cool looking, great idea but a useless item by RARE

  • @sshteeve I think you're either very lucky or I'm very unlucky because I never get anywhere near that much for my Seafarer's chests. 120-280 gold is more like the price range I get awarded. :(

  • If they are going to nerf the chests, then nerf the gold but give us decent rep for the time we spent sailing to the island, time we spent digging up and fighting the skeletons, the time spent sailing back to turn it in....I am ok with slightly less gold but I just would like there to be a bit more rep for our time.
I almost sank a few times with a sorrows chest because it would constantly cry. I was mad when I got less than a grand for it. But I had other high valued items that almost compensated for it.

  • @bonzaibingo88
Yeah sorrows chests annoy me when you sink (or nearly sink) repeatedly.
I tried placing it over the front of the ship (bowsprit?) and it still managed to flood my sloop, even when it technically cried over the water!

Yeah i know it's a curse, but hanging over the edge of the ship on the ladder works I believe too!

  • Chest of sorrows is almost a better pvp weapon than it's worth selling.

  • @logandor I agree that they appear to have been nerfed. I had a crazy GH voyage where I had to go to Chicken Island for 4 chests. Turned out to be a Seafarers, a Chest of 1,000 Grogs, and 2 Chests of Sorrow. I wanted to go to Plunder, but some guy was just sitting there for ages as I waited at Chicken with the chests wailing on the beach. Finally, I decided to go for Golden Sands, but someone was there and I ended up delivering at Sanctuary. It was so tense! Basically point ship in general direction, bail... adjust course, bail. They weren’t wailing in sync, either... so, I would, maybe get a minute’s respite. I was a bit disappointed that I only got about $1,200 for the first and $800 for the sencond. I don’t understand the variance.

  • @sshteeve I believe it being held over the ladder works too but I was told that it still started to flood the ship...next time I get lucky enough to find one, I will give it a try.

  • @rdizz I might just try this the next time I find one before I sell it in hahaha

  • My roommate and I were discussing the risk reward of this chest last night. We came to the conclusion that it could use a rework in how it works. If you were able to keep the chest from crying i.e. play music or keep it in hand i think it would be alot less painful to find it, however if i'm mid voyage and find one its basically "we need to hit an outpost before continuing. Obviously this chest isn't THAT obtrusive to the game but if you consider potential ship battles or a storm adding to the "pool" of trouble it just doesn't feel like the juice is worth the squeeze to keep it on the ship and finish your voyage.

  • @sshteeve I've had a large majority of captains chests at less than 550, they certainly need to narrow the bracket for payouts

  • @bonzaibingo88 I've had 4 on ship during a storm lol it was a nightmare. I swear they spawn if the storm is at the island you are on.

  • @jammyd22 good to know, I am going to check this theory because I am looking for any boost to my gained rep for GH...I am at 26 now. I am just hoping for some kind of rare delivery for MA since that is going to be focus for a bit due to the lack of rep gained per drop off...

  • @bonzaibingo88 I wouldn't worry about the grind mate their isn't much to look forward to atm, I deleted my pirate 2 weeks ago at 32/27/26. Now i'm 31/30/25 it's just cosmetics at the end of the day, i'm in for the long haul so have big hopes for this game.
I just skip the riddles and only do the maps, saves a lot of messing about for one chest!

  • @jammyd22 Oh I am aware of the lack of content but the rate I am going, I should be able to max out just as the new content comes available. I am having fun grinding out these levels and its the crew that is making this game atm.

  • @bonzaibingo88 Agreed mate, I enjoy the game so wasn't bothered about deleting my pirate xD

  • With the current rarity of the chest of sorrows, I do think it should be sold for at least 1k every time. I was solo slooping and had just found a chest of sorrows at shipwreck bay, while it was storming. I tried to continue the rest of the voyage but I had to turn around and head straight to an outpost because with the storm going on, the wheel moving, lightning striking holes in my boat, water striking holes in my boat, rain coming in, and the chest of sorrows pouring buckets, it was a very stressful journey that took everything I had to keep a steady course, bucket water constantly and patch holes. I sold it for 900, a decent captains chest but a whole lotta work to turn it in.

Yeah, I think you are just having bad luck or I have been having good luck somehow. Those numbers seem about 25% too low to me. The sorrows and grog chests pay out even a little better though the sorrows chest does seem like a lot of trouble for the return.
