Sea of Thieves needs life

  • So, two theories (or hypothesises, for the pedantic)

    1. The problem with Sea of Thieves if lack of progression ... And not in terms of levels or cosmetics. Every game ever made is all rather pointless ... Yet the gripping part isn't buying new gear, or learning new spells ... it's moving forwards, discovering new places, new enemies, new adventures. Sea of Thieves is the same at level 1 as it as level 30, and there's little more to be gained except more money, more skeletons, and more reasons to run away. We need difference!

    2. Sea of Thieves needs life. Everybody I've played with has the same analysis ... it's great mechanics, with a feeling of emptiness. That gap doesn't need to be filled with real players, but it does need to be filled with something ... Pirate towns should feel like towns, forts should feel like forts ... they shouldn't feel like a city built for a game that hasn't yet been populated.

In short, the game doesn't need stuff to do. It needs filling, and it needs difference. It needs to feel vibrant, and it needs to reward moving forward with something new, not a more complex, hardened version of the thing that came before it.

Also, in the spirit of pirating, I am drunk.

I hope it's grog... or just rum

  • @guybrushcrpwood I think it is great. They are adding more stuff to the game. If you reach level 50 with all factions you get legendary status and get a hideout with new features. Everytime I log on it is a different experience. Whether it be the pirates I met or the quests.

  • @titanvanguard14 I agree, kind of.

See of Thieves is the best game I've played - in terms of experience - for a long time. I adore it, and I absolute don't want the core mechanics to change.

I guess what I'm trying to get at boils down to a comment made in a Rare interview. I can't remember who asked it, but somebody from the press pointed out that Destiny (I've never played) uses psychologists to keep people addicted ... at which point the rare developer rebuffed it with assurances to the contrary.

I'm glad that Rare doesn't exploit our psychological urges for monetary gain. BUT, I do feel that the game requires some deeper analysis of what actually creates an engaging, long-term experience. A game based on 'playing with your mates' is no good if your mates don't have much urge to come back to it ... and the promise of 'experiences' is far too hit and miss for longevity.

  • @guybrushcrpwood I think the game will flesh itself out in the months to come. The roadmap they provided has a lot of stuff. I know a lot of people have said the roadmap was rubbish, but so far they have delivered what they said they would, so I don't see any reason why they would not follow their roadmap and flesh the game out. I remember hearing that they want this game to last 10 years. That's a pretty big ambition for what the state of the game is now, so it's guaranteed they will be fleshing the game out. All in due time.
