Hey maties, does anyone know if their is going to be micortransactions in the game? Im just curious?
Microtransactions
@tacoxwar Nope, Joe Neate said some time ago "microtransactions" are not part of the "spirit" of the game. Once you buy Sea of Thieves you can play all the time you want.
Also, Rare is trying to keep the game "balanced", you can change your look but we all have same weapons. Only skill can determinate a fight result.See ya on the Sea !
They pretty much said there would be by sayin there would be no loot you could buy to Get an advantage over another person
Basically saying yea we’re gunna do some kind but only comsitcsSo there will either be loot boxes currency purchase or a store of some sort..... what exactly is yet to be determined as much as I hate micro transactions and predatory game practices
@khan-azukr He definitely didn't confirm no microtransactions.
Yeah, you buy the game and play it without being locked out of being able to play with others who have made certain purchases. That's not what a microtransaction is though.
There's almost definitely going to be microtransactions in the form of cosmetic outfits.
@tre-oni Well if you say so, Joe said that during the last stream on Mixer and that conversation was oriented on "pay to win", I guess there is something I missed about microtransactions or not...
@khan-azukr Fairly certain he said buying or paying into having an edge over other players or locking non paying players out of playing something was what wasn't in the spirit of the game.
He still said that the rest of the answers to the MTX question have to come later. Cosmetic optional purchases isn't too far fetched to see I'm thinking.
@tacoxwar There might be cosmetic gear and items to buy from an "Item Mall" but nothing that will be pay to win.
Hopefully we will never see any loot boxes with the random item generator gambling simulation.We like to support a game we like to help Developers bring out new content and continue to expand a game..
So Item Mall would be ok.We are sucker's for pets, costumes, character customisation, vanity gear, etc.
I will never ever believe devs when they say there is "No Microtransactions"
I am betting there will be - it's the test to see if it's going to be ultra-intrusive or not.the thing is I personally hope there is not - for me this game is going to cost close to 100 canadian so that would irritate me to no end. What I will do is support expansion packs like guildwars to extend the life of the game.
in a game entirely based on treasure/loot having a function to makes you bypass the treasure hunting for clothing/weapons destroys the whole game
now if its for character looks like overwatch or something with the chance to customize those looks to your liking then im ok with that s long as they don't limit the character customization down.
@musicmee adding the loot box mechanic right now would be stupidity. There is investigation currently in to the randomnloot box mechanic and if it is gambling.
The only way to add micro transactions and skirt this controversy is making it a store. You buy in game currency and purchase what you want or use the free in game currency and purchase it at a higher price.This would be the only way around random gambling that all lootboxes Inevitably are
@zombie-p1ague For sure... I know lootboxes are definitely out of the picture... one Rare are not going to touch.
@musicmee I believe the Switzerland the EU Australia and the state of Hawaii all are investigating the practice of loot boxes as a predatory gambling game mechanic.
@zombie-p1ague As are Belgium... Pretty sure no other game company will ever use them ever again. Not in their current form anyway.
@musicmee Yeah, "loot box" pretty much became a swear word in the last few months.
I'm thinking it won't be long before people are calling others a "dirty loot box" as a taunt in games.
Well two possibilities will happen, they will become a federal regulated thing because they are deemed to be gambling. Then playing a game with them will require you to be 18+ and show some proof of age.
This Would severely lesson the player base do to age limitations and people just not wanting to give personal info out. Only to have another thing out there that could be hacked and have your identity stolen.Or states and governments just outlawing the mechanic calling it predatory and illegal. Like they did with cigarette companies and their cartoon mascots targeting children.
It sounds like there will be micro transactions from looking at the interviews and their answers, but none that will affect the game balance. Which is perfectly fine in my book. With the short life of games these days, if that keeps the game being added to well after its shelf life, I'm all for it.
Those that want to buy vanity items help everyone, those that don't aren't missing out on any edge and we get more content.
Hopefully it's more of a store for vanity items rather than loot boxes though.
I would say don't overreact on their announcement when it comes, but hey... the Internet :)
@lotuk I think for sure the items for sale will be purely cosmetic, the game itself does not have any barriers for new players and has no levelling, so that is all that it can be.
@lotuk
Right on, if people want to pay for Customization... I say have at it!If they are gaining a competitive edge... never gonna happen.
I think it's safe to say no matter what direction it goes, they've said before they want everyone new and existing to be on the same foot and be able to jump into a game and be on the same footing.
@uvg-reign said in Microtransactions:
Like I said, publisher is Microsoft Studios so it would be naive to think there wont be microtransactions.
Really, I don't care who the publisher is - they want the game to be supported after release I have no doubt there will be some way to pay for it.
If there are microtransactions I hope it's just to buy cosmetic stuff, I don't like the idea of spending real money for game money (looking at you here gta online) so I don't do it. Or buy cosmetics actually. If they come as a part of the pre order I'll use them, but I'm not handing over extra money for them.
@musicmee said in Microtransactions:
As long as they steer away from lootboxes and pay to win I don't mind them having microtransactions...
I'm along this road of thought as well, im fine with other cosmetic things like pets and the like. But the moment one pays to win or some kind of gambling system comes in and im out. The issue with both of these is that they can be tailored to make a player want to pay for them while ruining the game entirely. So yeah cosmetic items only... if they have them of course.
@the-lion-turtle I hope that means character models and not clothing, I want the actual shops in the game to feel like im working to buy it and what i buy is the best stuff..having this option to buy a 200 dollar outfit (Path of exile) is kind of a turn off to me but i get it helps support the devs if you've had 100s of hours in the game
also path of exil is a free 2 play game
while some people are paying close to 100 dollars to buy this game
its just hard to swallow
Im most likely the minority but i dislike cosmetic microtransactions alot. I would love to pay for content but i guess thats what most people dont want to do. It would be perfect if they release new content DLCs every few months for purchase. All those microtransaction stuff just ruins the immersion for me.
The games i got immersed the most in the last few years are all games without any microtransactions only content dlcs and i loved spending money on them. I have no joy in spending 10$ for a new outfit but spending 45$ for divinity original sin 2 felt very good. Witcher 3 DLC even made me feel bad because i thought i payed to less for the value i got.
Im close to 500 hours spend in dark souls 3 but i recently noticed that it is one of the few games without microtransactions and how satisfying and immersive this is. I think it would be very sad if Sea of Thieves gets cosmetic microtransactions because fashion is the biggest endgame goal of the game. I want to see the most b****s outfits, sails and itemskins for crazy achievemnts. Just imagine a crazy b****s looking piratsail which would terrify all other crews on your server for the best 5% of players that sink the most ships. Chances are that something like that could be a 5$ microtransaction everyone could get in their first hour of playtime...
I love to collect stuff and try to achieve and unlock everything in the games i love. Having tons of unlockeble cosmetics behind microtransactions compeltly kills that longtime motivation for me, since i dont feel any accomplishment by collecting microtransaction-skins... Games like that simple arent the games where i put 1000hours+ in. They are fun for a time and then i leave them. To be honest im not even sure if i will buy the game because im there will be a cosmetic item shop and that just kills my motivation in the long run. Thats sad because i enjoyed all the alpha tests.
@cebertus I agree a lot with what you wrote. What I also don't like about this is that fashion could not be representative of your level but your IRL wealth (I'm thinking of Fortnite but I'm sure there's many games like that).
Your comparison with Dark Souls III is spot on, and I think there's many more similarities between it and SoT (invasion and the idea of an open shared world, covenants (especially the Covenant of the Blue that helps for PvP), PvP and PvE, etc)@cebertus What you said. People defending microtransactions as long as they're only cosmetic are part of the problem. You're giving them permission to nickel and dime you for content which should already be included in my opinion. If I see someone wearing something and think 'Man that's cool! Where do I get one?' only to find out it's a cash purchase, I am not inclined to buy it at all, in fact I'm far less likely to get excited and immersed in the game and thus likely not to play it as long as I would've otherwise. I think some popular MMO's do it as close to 'okay' as can be done if they insist on having micros-transactions. I haven't played WoW in a while, but I remember if I saw someone wearing something really cool I could get that thing in game. It might take some crazy grind, or particular holiday event, but I could absolutely get it without paying cash for it given I was willing to put in the effort. If I wasn't I could always go to the AH. That being said there were some pay only cosmetics, but it didn't really matter cause you could find something just as cool by grinding it out. Same with Guild Wars 2. You could buy whatever you'd like at the AH with in game gold, microtransaction currency, or just grind it out. As long as the item is still reasonably obtainable in game, I can vaguely stomach microstransactions. Otherwise, they're garbage and game companies should go back to the 'expansion pack' model (that's what DLC use to be called way-back-when).
@tacoxwar I sure hope not, what is the point of playing a game just to buy your way to victory... or even cosmetics why not get out there and find it or get it the way the game was intended.
Given the bonuses for pre-order, as well as for the controller it's very likely, just given the style of the game that it can support a cosmetic market similar to Fortnites.
I'd be very surprised to see Loot boxes MTs in this game, and instead the more flat purchase option. However I would expect them to do a balanced buy or earn balance for the different style purchases, and be more general not allowing you to buy the Rep/progression reward cosmetics earned by rank, but just those things sold in the General Store.
