I give up

  • Finally uninstalled this game. First time back after a break from it, let me explain, a sloop w*d approach so I pull up anchor and thought I got away, nope they must have done the sword lunge thing, started to sword fight got a few hits in then it was jump jump jump all over the place from attacker, then they switch to eye of reach and kill me.
Respawned with the other player with his back to me on the wheel of my ship so I start to attack with sword guess what happened, jump jump jump all over the boat, on Xbox using the pad I am unable to keep up, I am immediately killed by the eye of reach.
Respawned again as the t**d is steering my sloop in to an island I jump off and start running and killed by the eye of reach this time with insults.
My point is the controller is no match against the k/m.
I returned to this game for 25 mins before I Turned it off and uninstalled it.
This went from my favourite game this gen to my worst.
I know I'm going to get the Get gud c**p, but I know there are other people who feel the same.

  • Sorry you had a bad experience matey, it sure can be grueling out there for us xboxers, though it's not entirely impossible - I've both won and lost many a fight, though I've never put it down to what system I'm playing on against theirs (don't get me wrong, it's widely acknowledged that one has an advantage over the other - I just don't let it bother me). All you can really do is scuttle, perhaps change to a new server, and carry on playing! I've been playing for many many months and still enjoy it.

Hate to say "get good", and I don't mean this in a harsh way, but practice really does make perfect. After so much time I know I can hold my own when I need to.

Sorry to see you go, but if you're not having fun, perhaps this simply isn't the title for you.

  • @snowfire
Sure , Sir , there are people that feel the same. And no i don't use that get good stuff to nobody. i'm an oldtimer , i get killed as many times by a PC player with his or her Keyboard /Mouse combination but also by Console players and their controller...The ships i lost towards better players is simply not countable anymore...Many of those ships i have lost because when fighting shipbattles ,and taking hits, the respawn time takes so long that i always come back to the Sea to see our ship sink or i'm already on an island since the ship has already sunk...But still i play as much as i can...
Maybe by becoming older i don't give two hoods anymore of winning...i feel like i'm always winning when playing this game...i love the sailing, listening towards the clutching water , the seagulls , parrots ,wildlife and wind through leaves on islands...When i'm on my own ,on a sloop, i sail like an assassin, sneakingly , avoiding battle and that is fun and thrilling too...With people we just sail and have fun, getting to know eachother ,probing eachother fantasy or Roleplay talent and creating our own story and world...Having heaps of laughs , sometimes we lose and sometimes we win....It doesn't matter since this game is much more about winning, losing, Legends or money ...This has such an attraction to me that i can't explain since i'm just a foreigner that lacks all the beautiful words to describe this game....alas...
A little edit ( * Oh ooow, you're all doomed, our dumbo is renown for his little "edits"): Really , If you let other peoples playstyle or verbal thrash get under your skin, and i know that happens sometimes , then you will turn your back to this game and any other multiplayer game. There will always be people better than you , or faster , or cheating , or trying to put you down in a verbal way...If you let them decide to quit this game then you are the one that lost...i was once very sencitive towards people comments ,also in real life ,i tried to do good for everybody but i failed , since nobody can...In games this sensitivity made that i didn't dare to play multiplayers games because " i was the one that let the team down ,because of my casual gamingskills ( * Huh? you dare to call those things skills? Grow up, moron), my slow reflexes and because people ,also those of my own team buried me under verbal thrash...And i was indeed the loser , i didn't spoke and hardly played multiplayer games for seven long years , although i yearned to be part of a team ,of Friends...i have lost beautiful years because i gave to much credibility towards those comments, today however i have a game where i can play the way i want and where i have met people ,who became my Friends also in real life eventhough they live a few hundreds mile away from me, who don't care if i am not that crackshot nor cannoneer , they just want that i'm happy...And that is the real spirit of this game...Rare simply wants that you enjoy this game and be happy nomatter if you win or lose ...Just killing time and have great stories made by yerself or others or just have an evening with laughs ...That's what this game was designed for...Adventures, improvised or Bilge Rat ,it doesn't matter , and having fun....THAT is the real goal of SOT , not winning ,losing , Legends that are just byproducts....

  • @clumsy-george Think you did rather well in your description there matey. Spot on!

  • @snowfire said in I give up:

I know I'm going to get the Get gud c**p, but I know there are other people who feel the same.

My advice would actually have been to scuttle from the Ferry and respawn elsewhere, but then I'm a very "path of least resistance" type of player.

If the supposed disparity between keyboard/mouse and controller really bothers you, there's not much I can say. (Not saying there isn't a disparity, just that I've never taken the time to test it, so I can't speak conclusively)

All I can offer is what has let me, someone who normally avoids online PvP games like the plague, enjoy the game. The nice thing about SoT is how little defeat actually matters. All you lose is what happens to be on your ship at the time, which usually isn't much if you're being careful.

If nothing is on your ship, you pretty much have nothing to lose other than a few minutes sailing. Because of this, I've been able to adopt a zen-like attitude to death. It's a minor annoyance with no long term effects, so I can easily forget it and move on.

I know this approach isn't for everyone, but it really worked for me.

  • I use a controller and do fine. Don’t blame the equipment.

  • I agree with you , came across this behaviour last night and never seen an issue previously but was killed by somebody that could lunge through bits of the boat.

With the volume of issues and the mad changes I think this game is done.

  • Muahaha, I wonder how many people I've made uninstall the game. I'm not a trash talker but I am a mass murderer.

  • pvp is a skill everyone needs to learn and it is a learning curve my advice would be always keep a eye out and you wont be the person seen first

  • I wouldn't give up bro, Use the frustration to help you get better.
The only real advantage K&M has over the controller is turn sensitivity and being able to 'Jump & Turn'.

For turn sense, just slowly up yours on the controller every so often & get precise with it, then up it again.

'Jump and turn' is abit harder unless you have a 'tournament' controller with paddles or extra bumper buttons or can actually play 'Claw'.
As I'm going to assume your thumb controls RTS & the A button, as of which you cant do both at the same time.

With enough practise, it wont matter if your opponents are K&M or controller, because your used to a high sensitivity and accurate with it, you can easily keep up with K&M, especially in this game.

    On a side note:
Not sure if you are familiar with 'Twitch' & the fortnite summer skirmish, but a streamer called 'NickMercs' was in the recent $1.5m tourney where 98% used K&M and where extremely good with them.
He held is own using a PS4 controller.
& with Fortnite, there are many more advantages of using K&M over controller then in SOT.
Just shows with enough practise it doesn't really matter what input device someone uses.

  • Don't take this the wrong way, but none of this sounds unique to keyboard/mouse. Since when has being a hard target to hit exclusively PC? Even the situation you describe doesn't even sound like you were a challenge to kill.

I've noticed this a lot with some players who try to use swords. There is this expectation that sword can kill players running away. Let me describe a scenario. I board a boat mid combat, run up to a inattentive player at the cannon. I shoot player with eye of reach, and follow up with a sword swipe, now the player is dead. Team is now alert of my presence, and now proceed to deal with me.

Players channel the fury of an angry weed wacker. They chase and sword swipe, expecting results. I proceed to back-pedal and take pot shots with Eye of Reach. They keep moving forward like a lawnmower set to cruise control. Meanwhile, what little damage they deal, I can easily heal up with a banana, and easily grab more form their barrel. Sword, lacks the finishing damage power, that guns have. They inevitable die and proceed to call me a cheater/PC player.

Am I saying this is like you? No, I am not. Does mouse have better aiming ability? Maybe, but I am not trying to argue that. What I'm saying is people do stupid tactics, then proceed to get mad when they get stupid results.

  • Honestly, Rare has done an incredible job at making the advantages of a K/M combo negligible when it comes to combat. I have my pc setup sitting right next to my xbox setup so i get to see firsthand the difference when my wife and I play. The way the combat is with the animations, there is not really a way to be faster. Yes, there's the jump and turn but honestly with the latest patch I can do it just as easily with my controller on either my pc or my xbox. I won't tell you, you should just "Get Gud". But remember there are some people out there that are naturally good at pvp combat regardless of the game, and while I have put whole galleons down by myself in a sloop, there always comes a time when someone comes along and sends me to the ferry without breaking a sweat. If nothing else maybe start trying to sail with more people, it will give you some support (hopefully) while voyaging, and you may find yourself a permanent crew member that way.

  • Git gud

I'm joking (dont git gud?) just takes some practice and muscle memory when it comes to pvp (use the eye of reach or pistol as secondary). As a primarily xbox player I had to relearn it when I bought a new computer. I play better on xbox than PC still to the day.

Only differences is the load times, fps (affects nothing), and the instant turn. With the turn you still have to be skilled enough to hit your target. If your using a sword you need to try and jump around dodge left and right and use cover to get to your target before getting popped by a gun.

I kill PC and xbox players both all the time on xbox, but it wasn't always that way. I played 1 day of beta access and when the full game went live I wasn't the worst but I got dumped on sometimes. It takes experience and time in game and fighting pvp to git gud. Consider your experience a favor from these people that attack you and keep fighting to be better at pvp (initiate some battles yourself).

I know myself I consider it a favor because they usually bring me treasure cuz I got gud.

  • The PvP combat is a cartoonish joke, like it cant be taken too seriously. Sorry that you had a bad experience but sometimes it is better to just scuttle and move on. Don't let some bunny hopping pirate get the best of you.

  • It’s unfortunate that this is a mechanic in this game or any game.
The easy fix to make combat feel like a sword fight is to make the hit box a column that would encompass the jump area (never gonna happen).
As mentioned before, keyboards will have that advantage as long as this is a thing and it always will be a thing in this game.
A recent patch tried to help by increasing the controller sensitivity which greatly helped. That still doesn’t change the fact that controller players need to remove their thumb from the stick in order to activate the jump.
As long as opportunity to find an advantage over others, it will be discovered and exploited. That’s the nature of PVP.

  • ever heard of remapping buttons. My buddy plays with an xbox and uses the old bumper jumper set up from halo. His thumb never leaves the RTS so try something out like that.

  • @sa-tanks said in I give up:

ever heard of remapping buttons. My buddy plays with an xbox and uses the old bumper jumper set up from halo. His thumb never leaves the RTS so try something out like that.

This is also good advice. Doesn’t change the fact the mechanic is there or that’s it’s not fun, but it help level the playing field.
Someone mentioned above about the fps, personally I have not experienced that issue.
Side note: not all “bunny hoppers” are good at it. If been boarded by one that couldn’t stay on the ship so I finished him off while he was climbing back up the ladder... classic. Haha.

  • I dunno man... I still can't buy the issue being game breaking... I play on both systems with a favoring toward PC because other people in my home use the TV and Xbox for varied other reasons outside of gaming.

I want to be fair and say it is a big deal.

But I just haven't seen it be a 'big deal'

The fluidity of motion and rotation has been narrowed yet again in a recent patch. The alacrity of movement is still narrowly different yet most button presses are locked with an animated response that allows even a slower controller scheme to accomplish the same actions. The ease of movement associated with camera angle adjustments does still get impacted - but again - not in a game breaking way.

It's different... surely... but the effects of either input measure are so close to the same that the differences are negligible at best.

Even just the other day I was clearly facing a group of macro wielding, erratically moving, carefully practiced PvP'ers who simply took control of my brigantine by shoving each of their crew onto our ships and using a double-shot that pretty nearly broke the animation it was so quick. All while allowing the other two who relied on swords and long range to provide a wall of blades to prevent my crew from getting below deck to bail.

Yet the activity still cost them their ship... and though ours too did eventually sink... it was quicker to return to the arena of the fight and they hadn't come back after that.

Because they could see that one versus 4 we were easy targets... but one on one... they were predictable and rather easily defeated. That and it took all four of them to keep us from getting below deck effectively as we continued to charge in one at a time from respawn like nubs (our own faults).

With that encounter existing and my seeing the worst of the benefits of fighting against PC players... I can still suggest that the advantage isn't there based entirely on hardware.

Sure, they had lazy mode macro's but not once had the double shot fired in a way that a controller couldn't have committed too. Not once did any of their epileptic movements actually behave in either a way that I haven't seen on many, many, many xbox PvP focused games, or in a way that provided them actual advantage. I play with a low DPI $10 mouse and the basic keyboard sans macros... I move quickly on a rotation and can alter my camera more easily to drive my movement, I admit this.

But I have yet to see it break the game.

I've had encounters as above while on my Alt and playing on Xbox... and I've both won and lost the day.

I will never say the hardware is equal. But I still have yet to be convinced it's as game breaking as most of these perspectives claim. Moreover I might presume that most of the residents on these forums have a potato computer... if the issue is so challenging.. play on PC the hardware limitation is one of choice, barely one of affordability. I've been here - as many have - since launch and I can promise that there are PC pros who will walk through competition.

But the number of those players is both so limited and so myopically driven... the likelihood of that level of encounter is thin. Thin enough that I can count the number of times I've encountered those players on one hand.

I know there are plenty of folks who will hate me for this perspective, but I do try to alter it... and still cannot wrap my head around the alternative perspective. Sorry the factor has created upset for you. With luck the distinction between control input measures will continue to thin. Best wishes.

  • @snowfire So you finally came back to the game, after obviously not playing much and lost a fight to a person who obviously plays more than you?

You honestly don't know if they were using a mouse and keyboard. What is obvious is that you need to learn the concept of "practice makes perfect". The more you play, the better you get. That applies to everything in your life.

The more you play the game the better you will become at it. There is a skill-cap involved there that is unique to every player. You either put the time in and practice to get better, or you try to play by hiding as you move around the world.

Has nothing to do with "git gud" and everything to do with applying yourself. You will still run into people that just outplay you... but that is what happens when you play games. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

  • I pretty much quit playing too. I don't think I have logged on for weeks. Well my band has been working on things too so I'm sure that has some play on it. But the game was just repetitive w/ no real achievement besides a number game that I could see. Furthermore the PC players against Console players are just totally unfair, and there is nothing you can really do about it (but that wasn't my biggest gripe). After turning Pirate Legend it was just doing the same things over and over again, nothing new. Sure a mermaid chase, some skelly ships spawning in the same locations every time was something to do - but if you think about it - that's also repetitive.

I just want this game to have so much to offer, like adventure stories and riddles like Monkey Island, but randomized. Who knows maybe Forsaken Shores will get me to come back for a little, but for now I am just bored. The game has a great foundation, and I do love it - it just needs more.

So yea, that's my 2 cents and don't really care to hear anyone counter it because.. well we all have our opinions - and stuff.

  • I am awful at PvP preferring to PvE and die quite often when in an encounter with other pirates. I tend to get all afluster lol It doesn't really bother me enough to make me quit as it is part of the game I love. What's more annoying to me is the relentless chase by another boat that can't catch me but will still persue me at any cost. Such a waste of time :D

I've invested too many hours to give this game up now. Yes there will be evenings when it is awful, although I have been pretty lucky, and to be honest when the encounter is bad we tend to wait it out on the Ferry.

  • By this point OP, I'm shocked that people don't know that MKB is the superior input device for games with FPS mechanics.

  • As a lifetime controller user until recently, the differences between controllers and kb/m are negligible.

    • You can turn faster with kb/m, but that difference can be mitigated with fancy footwork.

    • Fine tuning aim is easier with a mouse, but I can fine tune almost as well on a controller by strafing.

    • I can bunnyhop non stop on a controller. I suppose my style would be called claw grip. Thumb on joystick, index on face buttons, and middle on shoulder buttons.

I can destroy most any PC player while using a controller. PvP is almost all about tactics and strategy (especially in this game), but if you just don't have the brain power to outsmart your opponents, completely suck at aiming, and get butthurt easily then you should just uninstall all PvP games.

  • If you attacked with the sword first you screwed you.

  • Before giving up completely I have a piece of advice that's not "Git gud"

Try binding your jump key to R3 and switching the triggers so your right trigger is fire. Seems like it's weird at first but you'll soon find that it will feel like an older rare game (Goldeneye007 or Perfect Dark) and you will also have an easier time jumping and shooting.

My advice for the EoR is if you hear them get a shot of and it misses, close the distance with a sword lunge and slash away to interrupt their reload.
Jumping while running will make you a harder target at distance. And block while charging your lunge so you can still be mobile.

Either way don't give up. Look at each encounter as a lesson. Every player is different and TRUST NO ONE.

I would even suggest being on the offensive more often if you have nothing aboard. And learn to watch ladders. It's painfully hard to kill someone from the water if you can't board their ship.

I hope you give it another go!

  • Sorry to see you go, you are always welcomed back to the seas

  • I'm not going to give you the "get good" bologna.

Honestly some sensitivity settings and practice will get you there if you feel you are being outgunned. I have the game on PC and XBox and I simply won't play on PC because I find KB/M and sitting at the desk to feel less like fun and more like I'm still at work. I like to kick back with my Ferryman controller and CHILLLLLL.

Try adjusting your sensitivity, always shoot first then use your sword, and block-strafe with your sword if you feel you're outgunned. Don't chase PC players when they are macro-jumping, just find a good spot to take a shot from, they are counting on you to get frustrated and chase them down as they constantly jump.

I honestly don't mind losing a fight here and there, I don't let PC players get the best of me, if they win in a fight good on them. I appreciate PC players because they make me a better Xbox player.

Sometimes a change of attitude is all it takes. If anything, come back for FS it looks awesome and I hate seeing people quit.

  • i can deal wih the movements all ok, but i hate the jumping bunnys too. we nead stamina or something

  • A lot of nice people in this community.

  • @snowfire Agreed! And we never want to leave a good pirate behind...

I think that's why a lot of people jumped on your thread to hope that you will stay :D

I hope we see you around again soon!

  • Yup, toxic PVP'ers ruin the game.

  • When people try to come up with any excuse they can for losing I can't help but think about this meme XD.

The Force is everywhere; it binds everything together. It is sort of like the coding of life itself.

As a force-user, Vader is manipulating that code to accomplish his own ends; basically making him a hacker.

Sorry Anakin, yer account's been banned.

  • @snowfire

So because they outplayed you, you just assume they're on PC?

You can "jump jump jump" and snipe on xbox too. You don't even need an elite controller. PC players are a minority, chances are they were on xbox, and were just good at sinking ships. Even if they were on PC, that doesn't make them invisible. Maybe watching your ladders would have changed the outcome? You had to pull up the anchor, maybe taking the extra time to raise your sail, and raise the anchor before doing what you were doing would have prevented them from getting close enough? Maybe instead of using sword attacks when he had his back to you, you could have shot him first instead, maybe even knocking him off the ship?

My point is, stop making excuses. You can't just lose a fight and be like "Nothing i could have done, its the controller's fault" you're never gonna get better if you just make up excuses when you get outplayed.

  • @wyvernhavvk on xbox you can remap buttons to put the jump button somewhere more comfortable. Or you can get an elite controller. Or play claw.

    Make adjustments, not excuses.
