Avast Means Stop

  • Avast means stop what you're doing because there's danger about. It is not a "piratey" form of hello. Please stop using it as a cheerful greeting. The word you're looking for is "ahoy." Using "avast" to call attention to your post about the ideal shade of yellow for a banana is like shouting "fire" in a crowded theater because you're out of popcorn. Stop it.

  • Oh yeah it does actually mean stop.

  • One might use it as a way of hailing another ship on the move... The sort of piratical equivalent of "Pull over, driver!"

But, yes, there is avast difference between "hi there!" and "Stop!" :-)

  • "A VEST!!"

  • I wish I could downvote you for not ending that with avast.

  • Now using avast instead of ahoy for all interactions

  • Maybe it means "stop what you are doing and listen (or pay attention)"?

  • avast
(parody of pirate slang) listen!; pay attention!.

It does not mean the popcorn is on fire...

  • Avast ya salty scallywags!

  • @genuine-heather Google confirms. I have been using that incorrectly. My apologies.

Edit: So what is the pirate-y variant of go?

This I do not know. But here's a handy little site I've found helpful:

EDIT: I can't vouch for this site's accuracy. I've been doing a fair amount of reading on the history and myths of pirates from the 17th to early 18th centuries, but I'm no expert by any means. I've found lots of conflicting information. Many popular myths are so pervasive they are simply assumed to be true. Deeper study dispels many myths, while confirming a few. It's very interesting subject matter, in any case!

  • aye, but if we all use avast to mean ahoy then eventually the meaning changes. Like how literally now also means figuratively... actually, yeah let's stop using avast wrong, people who misuse literally literally kill me.

I regret that I have but one Like to give.

  • Avast you scurvy dog!! What are you a freaking English professor. Put your red pen away for crying out loud. Who cares.

Can I yell "Avast!" if my popcorn caught on fire?

  • But who's gonna avast me?

  • @seamus-hound Well, judging by the posts and the amount of Likes Heather's gotten, a nice lil' bunch of us do care.

  • Avast! Hammer time.

  • @genuine-heather

Nice little video here which suggests origins for some popular phrases as well -

  • @tundra-793 perhaps maybe you and the other 11 should find something else to get bent over about.

  • @seamus-hound

Okay. I vote for anger over missing Oxford commas in most writing. Oh! Or distortion of the phrase, "I couldn't care less!"

Seriously, I think you might be reading a bit much into the thread.

  • @awesomecoreusa

  • @v**a-hombre Hahaha! That made me laugh so much!

  • @katttruewalker eye roll
