@angrycoconut16 Was there a lack of diversity in the game before the flag was introduced?
As someone who is a supporter of and an advocate for the LGBTQ community, I feel this was just a bad idea. They introduced an issue into the game that didn’t exist in the game before. Adding the inclusive article to the Pirate Code was good - that’s to do with player behavior, but the flag was not a good idea. People didn’t pay $60 to have a real life issue plopped into a world where it didn’t exist. Everyone is equal in the game. The game allows you to choose and dress your avatar as you see fit - which is as close to the issue as the game gets. Putting the flag in unnecessarily builds a wall in the community. Whereas, prior to this, you would have people joining crews and playing in harmony without having to address beliefs regarding sexual orientation and gender identity, now you will have people leaving crews because they don’t believe in the same things - simply because a Pride Flag is raised on that ship.
Basically, the devs created a social issue in the game that didn’t really exist in the game before.
Being supportive of the LGBTQ community is great - that’s what Pride is all about. But, there are many oppressed minorities in the world; Sea of Thieves has chosen to represent one of them in-game... the only representation of a real life community in-game, in fact. Whereas the movement is about everyone being equal and having the same rights and privileges regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity, the devs have chosen to give a distinct privilege to the LGBTQ community - in a game that has nothing really to do with real life social issues. So, the move just feels counter to what the movement is supposed to be about and creates a divide that the movement is about removing.
There were many ways for the devs to celebrate the LGBTQ community without alienating some of their playerbase - players who didn’t pay $60 for an overt comment on social/political/religious issues regarding sexual orientation and gender identity in the world of a game that had nothing to do with those real life issues.
