@mcdoll I may be reading between the lines here, but something tells me you're not happy with the game...
Every one seems to be shoot first ask questions later, in fact dont talk, just shoot.
Was just at Crooked Masts and a sloop pulled up with a couple of players on board. We immediately agreed to leave each other alone. I grabbed my chests as they grabbed animals. They even found a random chest and checked to make sure it didn’t belong to me before putting it on thier ship. This isn’t common behavior but it wasn’t more common a few weeks ago either.

In the first weeks of the game there seemed to be much more of a community vibe about the game. Sloops would work together against galleons, battles would be hilarious and in jest and fun, nearly every one was talking in game and not using Discord, TeamSpeak or Party Chat to communicate out of game.
During battles on the ship of the damned you'd have light conversations with the people you're fighting with before going through the door and continuing the battle.Within the first 2 weeks of release, I've never laughed so much while playing a game in my life.
Today, you get slightly close to a ship and it immediately attacks. Yesterday I was being chased by a galleon half way across the map for nearly an hour. I was on my own and I'd lost half a dozen captain's chests due to the recent disconnects, I knew the galleon was just after kills and I was getting a little p****d off. While going round an island trying to get a larger gap from the galleon I went past a docked sloop. I warned the sloop's crew. "There is an angry galleon coming get back to your ship", "They just want to sink any ship set sail now"
My thanks? Several shots of cannonballs, 2 of them hit.
I play don't shoot unless shot upon. I really try to communicate with others, I try to offer assistance, even repairing people's sloops who are being battered by a galleon just to be shot in the back by the crew while doing so.
It makes me wonder, where is the community of the game now?
The community and player interaction was the game's greatest aspect, but its seems that is quickly disappearing.Every time I end up coming closer to another ship than I wanted to, I will shoot myself out towards them, in game chat, and say Hi. If they talk back and are friendly or even don't want to make friends, great. If they kill me, that's fine too I'll leave them alone.
I will always, send them a message after saying that I won't bother them again, I just wanted to say Hi.

Like I said I send my ship off. If they kill me they don't do any harm. I spawn back on my ship while they are on an Island.
I have read quite a bit on this forum quite a bit of comments it is true that there are a lot of people that shoot first and ask questions later but there is just the exact same amount that are friendly out there in every single session that I have been in it's been about one to one with good and bad people you just have to find yourself in the correct server I have been in servers that are full of PVP players but regardless you always must be cautious and be on the ready when you see another ship even if you think someone is friendly you always must be on your guard but if you are running a solo Sloop I do suggest getting someone to play with you the two-man Sloop with good communication is the strongest ship in the game just be cautious my friend try not to go in with the random because sometimes the randoms can be worse for you

One reason you dont hear anyone is cuz they all use the damn party chat. And xbox can only be one or the other. I'm PC so I have party but also push to talk in game. And people shoot first, especially newer players because one of the fun things about s.o.t is firing a cannon at a ship, the sound, animation and damage.....takes a while to get over it. My crew still cant fer enough haha. Would be nice to have no party chat tho. It's more rp, if you could only take in game, if I tell to a crew mate, everyone should hear it.
Meh...I stick to my 'never shoot first' mentality. Mainly because I have a more smuggler playstyle going on. If you are close enough to my ship to potentially fire upon me then I can usually guarantee my hold is empty. If I got anything worth anything then I will always be a shadow on your horizon~
...if you see me at all.
As a whole though in my play experience things seemed to have become less violent as things progress. Hell I shared a region with 2 galleons and another sloop and no one bothered anyone. One galleon was even doing a skull fort and the other galleon sailed by and gave them no attention. Either things are chilling out or it's a sign of the end of days. Take your pick.
I was about to log off but decided to look for another ship to give them my supplies before I go. Someone did that for me once and it was very nice of him.
I found one ship next to a skull fort and he said he was just testing the game and had plenty already, so I told him to have fun and continued to the next ship. There was another sloop parked next to an island, I parked next to their ship and noticed they had 6 gunpowder barrels on deck. Decided to wait for them to come back.
When they showed up, they were suspicious at first, but one of them decided to climb on my ship to greet me. I waved back at him and told him that I'm logging off and asked if they need any supplies. He didn't answer but was friendly. Then I see his friend climbing on the ladder of my ship with a gunpowder barrel. I say "Come on, don't do that. I'm just here to give you supplies". Then, a gunshot and an explosion in the belly of my ship. I jumped to their ship, went to the deck and shot one of their barrles. Everything was destroyed.
I mean, I get it if they tried to blow up my ship. But did they really think I wouldn't notice so many gunpowder barrels on their deck?
Anyway, I'm sure I'll find someone who is friendly and will accept my supplies one day!
@macdoland I would like to see flags on the mast or back of ship that allow us so state our intentions.
Raise the black!
Our crew doesn't use the voice coms because we expect online people to act like online people. We don't want to hear 95% of it, and that's for all games. Blame online society for all the verbal hermits out there. Yay for party chat.
Our crew has rules of engagement. Don't start none won't be none and stay off of our ship. Nothing good will come from letting somebody on your ship.
In regards to all the KOS crews out there, we go hit a fort first thing to pick up some red barrels full of deterrent and go out of our way to never get close enough to get shot or boarded.
@aristonsparta
I 100% support this. I know people always argue that it would be abused/used to bait in gullible people but lets face it...is that any different than the system we have now? At least this way we have an official way to attempt to signal our intent from a distance.@klazik said in Every one seems to be shoot first ask questions later, in fact dont talk, just shoot.:
I used to be "Don't shoot unless shot upon". I only lasted for so long. There's only so many times you give others a chance.
Now I don't give no chances. Now I do everything in my power to kill people coming up to me. I even sink docked ships of all kinds. I'm not proud of it, but I found it the only way to actually get anything done in this "PvP only" game..But don’t you feel you are perpetuating the behavior instead of helping to stop it?
@rumham636 yeah totally get why being in party chat is handy. Still don't fully understand voice comms and who can hear who. I mean why push to talk, I'm not pushing any buttons when I talk. All I know if I have PTT on ingame, in-game chat crew can't hear. Not sure what happens with xbox.
Maybe many issues with the 4th member could have been resolved if they auto joined party chat or those party chat crews auto switched to in-game.
@stroro Really? I feel like player interaction has gotten WAY better as time went on. When I'm on a sloop a majority of sloops I find are really chill. Galleons are another story, I'd say 7/10 galleons are going to attack a sloop on sight (in my experience). When the game was new all I ever experienced was attack on sight from almost everybody...including myself. I've met lots of cool people just plugging in my mic and talking to them as I see them. You're of course going to get people without mics who will just shoot. But then I get to just sink them and not feel bad about it! :)
You really have no one to blame but Rare. The game's design just doesn't have anything to push players towards talking to each other at all. There could be a whole slew of areas that were too dangerous to explore without more manpower, or other such mechanics. Maybe the game will get there in a year and we'll actually have a reason to talk to people. But right now there's almost never a valid reason for attempting to team up with someone.
@stroro I think people are just bored... so they are doing their best to make their own fun, as soon as more content is dropped I bet there will be a decrease in the amount of purely PVP mindsets on the seas.
I must admit I have become so wary of other players as soon as a ship comes near or someone happens to be on the same island my instant gut reaction is to attack, simply because I have been burned too many times. Wasn't like this to begin with. I'd meet another ship pulling in to outpost and wave or leave them Aline while they handed their loot in only to be attacked after. Or I'd skirt a ship in the way to where I was going only for them to seek me out after turn in and sick my ship while I'm questing on the island. Unfortunately this IS what the game is about and for those like myself who are not all that in to the PvP side its hard. I just take the losses with the gains and use Solo trips if I'm not that fussed about losing stuff. I more than make up for loses when I'm with my crew. This isn't to say I will always back down from confrontations when I'm solo but usually I don't have enough on board to be bothered with those long winded chases

Hungering Deep promises such a thing. "Crews will have to work together to discover and defeat this [new AI] threat as part of a unique event." Don't know more than that, but it be something.

I agree 1,000 % with your post.
My standing philosophy is "Do not fire unless fired upon" and "Talk first, then fire"... however, lately with sloops, I've had to adopt a stance of "Stay a certain distance away or I will fire upon you". The reasoning is simple: if a sloop comes at our galleon within a certain distance, it's almost guaranteed that someone on that sloop is going to jump off and try to powder keg us... and I will smite them with righteous cannon fire and snipe that barrel in hand every time.

I generally feel the same way, but I will say... voice chat in this game is often quite different. In fact, I've received 10 times more toxic PMs that I have heard toxic behavior in voice chat. I am usually the guy recommending against it, but in this game I really recommend trying in game sometime. Unless, of course, you play on xbox and cannot do both party and in game, then I totally understand.

Oh my Breakfast Club obsession days!
Just a silly observation
During beta: Everyone was so much nicer during alpha!
During launch: Everyone was so much nicer during beta!
Now: Everyone was so much nicer during launch!
I don't know if it's my approach, or other people are just getting more prone to friendly behavior, but I feel like it's better now than it ever has been in terms of people not mindlessly attacking. Maybe I'm just getting lucky, or maybe I'm just getting nicer and it makes it seem like other people are getting nicer, I'm not quite sure.
