Unfair exclusives

  • I really love this game, I have had the most fun with this game than any other in the last 8 years. I have supported this game through all the bad press/comments it got. I kept convincing my friends that it is so much different than most the reviews say.

But what I really think is unfair is the new exclusive items that are gained through the chips-ahoy cookie codes. I do not mind that people have to buy this brand of cookies to get them.

What I do mind is that this extremely localized (USA and Canada). Anyone in Brazil, Australia, Oceanea and Europe are not able to get these items.

I was hoping anyone from the SoT team could explain why they made this choice (to only supply these items to certain regions).

    Sincerely,

    Captain Wheats

  • @captain-wheats You can buy them from amazon im sure?

  • @dannylarr No amazon in the Netherlands

Edit: There is no way of telling if the packages from amazon in DE (germany) contain these codes. As far as I have heard they do not :(

  • Go to reddit. There's a megathread of codes that are reusable.

Using this post to tell Rare they sucked at cosmetics and pulled cosmetics because they were unprepared.

  • Ah that's a shame :( sorry to hear that, i guess you'd have to have friends abroad or someone to ether mail them or help you out with the codes!

We deffo have them available in the UK so maybe someone you meet in game or have met and become friends with could help you out?

  • @dannylarr As far as I know this ''exclusive'' is only in the US. according the website ( https://mondelez.promo.eprize.com/chipsahoyxbox/ ) it is only available in 50 states

  • @gloog Thanks! I'll got and check. But this still doesnt cover the fact that they only opened this in the USA

  • I want to put the blame on M$ for this one but nonetheless I hate this stuff. Destiny did it also and people naturally found away around it. Regional tie ins suck kraken excrement.

  • The codes are reusable so if you ask a friend in america they can give you the codes

Nope not Canada. I live in Canada and we have chips ahoy everywhere but for some reason they didn't include us.

  • I think it's not up to Rare, instead it's MS usual US-centric marketing and bonus. Win a Xbox One special edition? Only if you are a US-Canadian citizen. Cortana language localization? Only US-Canada, sorry.
The Quest for the Golden Bananas? Sure! Oh, you're Italian/Spanish/Portuguese/Etc? Not my problem.

I tried to redeem the codes posted by some kind and way more caring than MS chaps on a Reddit post ( https://www.reddit.com/r/Seaofthieves/comments/8g6dj8/chips_ahoy_mega_code_list_with_instructions/ ), they don't work anymore or work randomly.

  • Definitely a marketing blunder, but we can at least take solace in that they're just cosmetics, and we're 1 box of cookies less likely to get diabetes.

  • even in america rare could care less about us

  • Hey man I'm from Newfoundland, Canada. Basically where they got a lot of inspiration for Sea of Thieves and I haven't seen a single Chips Ahoy Sea of Thieves pack. Black Beard died off the coast of Newfoundland....I want my g******n SoT chips ahoy. Edit: He didn't die off the coast of Newfoundland. Don't know where i heard that.

Lol Jk about wanting the chips ahoy. Good luck finding some!

Good question, i would also like to know this... I would also like to know, if they at some point, will release a purchaseable "black dog complete package" that contains not only the black dog pack, but the gun skins and tool skins to match, for a sum of money...

Tbvh, having these codes via the Ahoy cookies or whatever is fine, as long as it is in addition to a thing you can buy for a complete collection that is available in every country where SoT is available, via an online shop, or ingame shop.

Only giving players these cosmetics via codes found in cookie boxes in specific parts of USA, with some codes being re-usable (because reasons? ._.)... is something i find HIGHLY UNPROFESSIONAL and quite frankly, unacceptable behavior from Rare. : /

  • @sweltering-nick not sure why they would realese a purchasable black dog package when black dog dlc is supposed to be an exclusive. I mean it's not really fair to the people who preordered the game to have an exclusive item go up for sale is it?

  • The codes are redeemable worldwide, and are reusable. You just have to check the box stating your a US citizen. There's a thread on reddit for code sharing.

  • If people go read the cookie give away it is USA only. Canada gets nothing. So we are in the same boat as every one else that is excluded. But also if you read about it Microsoft has nothing to do with it.

The sponsor for the event is Mondelēz Global LLC, 100 Deforest Avenue, East Hanover, NJ 07936.

The are the ones responsible for it.

It will stop being an exclusive, because people quit the game, and new players join, eventually, all those who got the black dog back will stop playing the game, meaning the set will effectively cease to exist, because no active player will have it.

There needs to be regular re-releases of this set in order to keep it in the circulation... Otherwise, it's just a waste of time making the set to begin with.

The set can still be exclusive, relatively speaking, to specific events or seasons.... As long as the set is kept around.

If you can only obtain the black dog pack via pre-ordering the original game, then the set isn't really exclusive as it will eventually cease to exist altogether thanks to the decaying older playerbase.

  • I don't disagree with the OP as I despise, "get lucky enough to even hear about a thing, let alone be a customer of yet another service/product entirely, or my favorites - live in a certain area, be around at a specific time you prolly didn't realize was announced until to late Promo's".

But in this case, that's just what this is - a promotion. An attempt to pull in more customers through advertising and enticement. These customers will now do two things, increase chips ahoy sales and hopefully draw in more SoT players (and by extension more game-pass/direct sale/play-anywhere/XboxLive customers).

It's especially common to see association with Mtn Dew and Doritos from Xbox/MS and I figure we only have to wait before we see that offering similar to this one.

  • @sweltering-nick I don't agree with that. Exclusives do not need to be re released to keep them in circulation. You either pre ordered and got the pack or you didn't. If you really want the black dog dlc you can buy codes on eBay.

  • @combatxkitty ebay is not a valid source of content from Rare, mate.

  • @sweltering-nick lol yeah I know that. Im just saying if you really want that pack you can order an unused code instead of wanting/waiting for Rare to re-release an exclusive because you didnt do the requirement to get it.

  • Do you have access to the Internet?

    Problem solved.

  • Tell ya what get me the sea of thieves controller and I'll give you 4 codes and mail you cookies.

  • @combatxkitty said in Unfair exclusives:

You mean, i have to go to ebay to buy a code illegally, because i don't live in the USA? ._.

  • @combatxkitty reminds me of collectors edition GTA V. comes to Xbox One and suddenly anyone can buy the same cars and everything. i was salty lol

  • @sweltering-nick calm down, im not telling you to rob a bank, geez. Was the pre order only for U.S. customers? If that's the case I wouldn't be against Rare releasing the DLC packs to countries who did not have the opportunity yet, for a limited time of course in some type of give away.

  • @combatxkitty "calm down, you arnt robbing a bank, you are buying a dlc code."

No, i'm not, i'm buying a code for a cosmetic... ILLEGALLY.

"Was the pre order only for U.S. customers?"

    No, but these cookies are.

"If that's the case I wouldn't be against Rare releasing the DLC packs to countries who did not have the opportunity yet, for a limited time of course in some type of give away."

You're almost picking up the point i'm trying to get across here... Almost. :P

  • @sweltering-nick I'm not talking about the cookies lol. I was talking about the black dog pack and I stand by the fact it shouldn't go on sale. As far as the cookies are concerned I don't agree with the contest being just US for these items and hopefully they can find a way to do a give away for these for people who arnt in the U.S.

No I'm not almost getting your point. I get your point. You feel the black dog pack should go on sale because you and others didn't pre order the game and missed out on it and you feel that Rare should now sell it to keep it in circulation . Well I don't agree, case closed. Why should Rare keep focus on this outfit? I would rather them create new ones to release for special give aways or events. Next time a game has a pre order give away that you want, preorder it. At the end of the day no one is entitled to a give away. Sorry you missed it.

  • @combatxkitty "I'm not talking about the cookies lol."

Newsflash buddy, neither am i... Buying codes from other sources than officially approved Microsoft or Rare supported sources, is ILLEGAL...

Meaning if you buy a code for SoT from some randomer on eBay, you could theoretically get sued for that. This is why you cannot justify buying codes from places like that, because it is ILLEGAL. :P

Your entire argument is based on the premise that you "could always just buy a code off of eBay", lol... I'm saying it's not a valid argument.

That's like saying: "Oh, can't find an organ donor for your failing heart? You could always buy a new heart on the black market, no biggie." :P

"I was talking about the black dog pack and I stand by the fact it shouldn't go on sale."

Not saying it should go on sale, just saying it needs to be available more than once, otherwise it will eventually cease to exist... That's just a fact. :P

"As far as the cookies are concerned I don't agree with the contest being just US for these items and hopefully they can find a way to do a give away for these for people who arnt in the U.S."

Only having it available in the US, in addition to some of the codes being re-usable... Is unprofessional on several levels... It's unacceptable behavior from a big company like rare, if they're gonna make something available, EVERYONE of their customers need to get an equal chance to get the promotion product... That means available everywhere, simultaneously... And the codes should NOT be re-usable, because that defeats the purpose of the promotion, which is to earn more money.

This whole cookie-business, is utter nonsense. :P

"You feel the black dog pack should go on sale because you and others didn't pre order the game and missed out on it and you feel that Rare should now sell it to keep it in circulation."

I have the black dog pack, so no... That's not my point...

My point is, what's the point of having done the work to MAKE the black dog pack, if you're only going to give it to the people who are least likely to be around in 10 years? Eventually those players wil stop playing, and Rare would've done all the work to make this cosmetic set, only for NOBODY to use it. :P

It's contradictory... It's like making a bicycle only to use it once, and then never using it again... It's just a waste of time and effort. :P

  • @sweltering-nick Except Rare and Microsoft have nothing to do with this at all apart from say selling X amount of codes to a company in the US which is why its US only. The company doing the event is Mondelēz Global LLC, 100 Deforest Avenue, East Hanover, NJ 07936. And in the rules it states Microsoft has nothing to do with the administration of the codes or promotion.

I agree we all should beadle to get the codes for sure. But because Microsoft and Rare have nothing to really do with it. All we can do is raise enough feedback that they see the community is being split and they should to something else to make up the difference.

Facepalm I see you know what is happening, but you just can't see it happening in front of you. xD

Why did rare not give codes to other parts of the world as well? Hmm? Also those codes are obviously given to people who are LEGALLY allowed to distribute them and sell them. :P

"But because Microsoft and Rare have nothing to really do with it."

They, gave the codes out, and... Ensured it was legal, also ensured it could be traced back to the game, seeing as it's a promotion for the game...

It's got plenty to do with Rare, mate... Rare just isn't in charge of the cookie company themselves and how they choose to distribute the codes.

Also, Microsoft OWNS RARE, hence why Microsoft is also involved by extension.

"All we can do is raise enough feedback that they see the community is being split and they should to something else to make up the difference."

    Sigh

Time to make some forum posts, then. :P

  • @sweltering-nick your assuming they gave the codes out. I am sure and would bet they where purchased in some bid. No company especially Microsoft will give stuff away for free like that when they know it will drive sales for another company. They love their money as well and would have just sold them to be used how ever the other company wants to do with them.
