Please increase the draw distance! The spyglass has become pointless after the update.

  • The spyglass used to be important and fun to use. Now with the reduced draw distance I can literally watch things walk in and out of draw distance with the naked eye. You can no longer scout islands for loot, animals or players. You can no longer scout ships for a player count, loot location or TnT in the crows nest.

Please make the spyglass relevant again.

  • I was just coming here to say the same thing. Now that you have to be right on top of an island to see if there's anything glinting off of the beach, it feels kinda pointless to cruise around searching for anything that's not part of an active voyage.

  • @sveepa I agree, the draw distance has made the eyeglass suffer horribly. :(

  • They reduced the distance again? Why do PC users get the raw end of the deal? If the super advanced, well built Xbox cant handle what any moderately priced PC can then maybe Microsoft should get out of the console market.

  • +1, engaged another ship yesterday and I could literally not see the crew on the ship until we were about cannon reach distance. (Give or take)

  • @naoshadowpaws This actually affected Xbox players as well. So I have been told.

Yup, I play on the XBone exclusively & the draw distance has reduced dramatically. It's to the point now, where when I use my spyglass, I can see trees floating above a non-existent beach where the flora & barrels should be.

  • @sveepa Probably why they reduced it in the first place, for console players to have an equal playing field or some such thing. They just need to bump it back up and find the sweet spot where it works for everyone, not needlessly crunch it down.

  • My Game Pass trial expired and I was about to buy the game and then I read about the render distance nerf. A downgrade to the game after two weeks is very troubling.

One of my favorite things was to scout islands for loot, animals, TNT etc. It was so cool seeing that "bling" from bottles and eventually treasure...

I really hope this is sorted out soon.

  • Huh. I noticed this in-game, but didn't see patch notes explaining this.

Was this possibly a change they made to improve server performance during launch? I'd see that as an acceptable, temporary, trade-off, but they should really return this to normal. Distant details were incredibly well rendered initially.

  • I haven’t had the chance to play since the update, but this sounds super lame. I’ll have to give it a go tonight.

  • I believe this was done for performance reasons (possibly because some people on both Xbox and PC were having performance issues, though likely more PC with all of the varying system specs); however, I don't recall having any issues myself, and I would imagine that lower PC settings should fix the issue, so I'm not really sure why they went this route, but I agree it needs fixing.

  • I agree.

At release, the spyglass worked excellently. When we hit the first patch though, the draw distance was severely reduced, and now the spyglass is almost useless for anything but masts at a distance.

Same with islands - you have to be so close to get them to load-in fully.

I really prefer the way it worked at release.

  • +1 for increase draw distance

  • At launch I used the spyglass to search for chickens easily. Since the update, I basically have to be in swim range of the island; and even worse - must slow to a crawl to wait for the animals to draw.

  • I'm fairly confident this is unintended since there's been no mention of it in any patch notes.

There's also been no mention of it in the known issues so I hope Rare will comment on this in the near future.

  • @sveepa
Look all you have to do to avoid these problems is this. Everyone just needs to stop complaining about the mechanics of the game so it stays the way it is and they won’t “fix” things!! Yay!! That’s all!

  • bringing attention to this as well, it makes me really sad and breaks my immersion when anything zoomed in is floating above the ground on the island

  • @naoshadowpaws It's a server load issue not a system hardware issue. Stop blaming the consoles on the devs not able to optimize their servers to handle long draw distances for the players without overloading. You're giving them an out.

  • @gem-pheenix No it's the console, if those toasters could perform at the same level as a mid tier PC we'd have insane render distances. There's only 16 players per server, the stress load isn't that bad so quit blaming their hardware. Played just fine before they reduced it, and it played fine before they did so again.

  • @naoshadowpaws Yea you're right it did play just fine before they did so again performance wise, but the server stability was so bad they had to stop letting people join into the servers on launch day. And the consoles had the SAME render distance as PC too. In Fact the console has had the same Render distance as PC in every test leading up to launch. I never experienced any performance issues on this game before the render distance nerfs which I am noticing just as much as you are now. But you know what problems I did have? Server stability like everyone else. And what problem have they been trying to fix since their launch was crashing their servers? Oh yea Server Stability.

It has nothing to do with the consoles. The regular Xbox one has no problem running the game with the original render distance. I'd assume it has a lot to do with trying to stabilise performance across the board and server stability at the moment. I'm sure we will get an increase soon.

  • Don't let this die. Ruins the game, really.
Have to be well within pistol range to see anything on an island now. On Mythic settings.
Can't see shipwrecks from a distance because the birds don't render in.
Never see 'shinys' on random islands anymore, only on the island you're at and only if you're running around.
Really decreases the 'adventure' aspect of the game when you have no reason to even bother looking anymore.

  • I'm convinced they had to shaft the LoD to get the Xbox One X running at 60fps @ 4K. So whilst the Xbox One X puffs and pants drawing something that looks like minecraft, your average GPU (say, GTX1060 @1080p) is busy flipping 120+fps in sleep mode!

The graphics used to be terrific, especially Mythical, but now, ugh, ugly and really noticeable POP IN.

It's not just the draw distance but the LoD distance as well. Unless you're close to an island, it looks horrible with the spyglass. By the time the detail POP IN whilst using the spyglass, your so close that it's pointless. Even the water looks like a bunch of triangles using the spyglass whereas it used to be beautiful.

This is perhaps one of the most disappointing things that has happened to the game.

  • Oh, and the graphics were nerfed around about the time that the Xbox One X was being promoted as running the game at 60fps @ 4K HDR.

    Coincidence? I think not :/

Developers ghost nerf/patch things all the time. Not mentioning it to the player base means very little. I would assume this is their "answer" to the server load issues, which is pretty sad.

  • I've been really impressed with the basics of draw distance in this game (ships, lanterns on the ship, islands, seagulls), but since the patch I've definitely noticed the details lacking. Scouting islands for loot or even just trying to see which side of an island skeletons are on for an OoS mission is much more difficult. Inspecting an enemy crow's nest too.

I watched my friend approach me in a sloop when I got marooned and could make out most of the details of the ship way before his player model loaded. Like, I could see the wheel of the helm turning but not him at the wheel.

Surely they can make a spyglass specific change here to improve the draw distance while scoped.

  • Aaaaaah this explains so much I knew something was way off. When i'm walking around islands I can see barrels and what not load in gradually, i take 3 steps back they disappear and 3 steps forward it reappears in this gradual fashion. This was not the way before so I was messing about with my settings as I have 3 set to legendary and the rest to mystical. Even when pumping them all to max there's little difference so it was an update on their side that did this then :( pity. Please revert it back please. Hopefully it was to reduce server issues or something I don't know. I'm worried its nerfing pc players to match xbox though, I don't play on xbox so I cant say what its like on their.

  • @sveepa I agree 100%.

  • @terron29 I am fairly certain the change was made across the board and is not isolated to a specific platform.

  • @sveepa a dit dans Please increase the draw distance! The spyglass has become pointless after the update. :

I don't know why that would affect the server load issue in a way or another because, unless i'm mistaking, the draw distance and Lod is client side only.

I'd tend to agree more with Doctor N****e theory :

  • @cpt-peach-beard What platform are you on?

  • @sveepa that was on my PC last night

  • I will again add to this topic because I consider it highest priority. The draw distance has been nerfed 100% and it’s not just that it makes the game look ugly it is affecting gameplay Rare! This has happened after the 1st patch (intentionally or not) across both platforms and it needs to be fixed back to how it was at launch asap. If it was an unfortunate by-product of unstable servers surely that has been sorted now? The spyglass is completely useless. Having to actually be on an island to see anything is surely not what was intended. Seeing as you only have like 5 tools - to have one that is obsolete is gamebreaking! Please can someone give some information as to what is being done about this issue?
