I’ve played solo for months and enjoy it, you have to take a different approach to playing you have to suspicious of everyone and dodge and dive the big ships and even the two person boats, it takes time to get used to this type of gameplay because you have to consider everything thing on your own. It makes the game so much more if a challenge as it is literally you against the world. I’ve been where you are so I know how it feels don’t let the actions of the few make you judge the many, find another outpost to offload and learn to run, don’t give up aaaaarrrrgh
Another bad solo experience, no point having it in the game
@king-ron Pick up groups in any game are always rough. I would recommend teaming up with other like minded players through the forums here or when you come across cool people in the game. I've added at least 5 or 6 new people to my friends list from these last two Closed Betas. When it comes to soloing in this game you just have to strategize differently. Finally, I am pretty sure everyone knows that the respawn is an issue. This is only a BETA not the final game.
That sounds awesome, @boaton!
How do you stay undiscovered while moving through the ship? they should see your white gamertag, don't they?@king-ron said in Another bad solo experience, no point having it in the game:
I just came back to port and found a ship there,
Just find another port. Problem solved.
@zaakery there are different kinds of pirates. Rare said we could be the pirate we want to be. Some people want to be the nice kind of pirates instead of the bad ones. Kind of like the ones that Craig mentioned on the IGN podcast as the birthday pack pirates. Griefers are keeping those kind of people from enjoying their vision of a pirate. I can understand that point of view. I think Rare needs to respond to that criticism or drop the their idea that you can be the pirate you want to be. As long as PVP is being forced, those kind of players will just quit playing.
@azbat360 Being the pirate you want to be doesn't have anything to do with how other pirates treat you. That's like saying be the person you want to be, and expect others to treat you the way you want to be. No, that's not how it works. Be a nice pirate if you want to, but don't get mad if someone else, who isn't you, wants to take all of your belongings. They are not "griefing", they are playing the game and "being the pirate they want to be".
As a solo player myself, i find it alot more fun and challenging to be solo.
I have had times when i have been sunk and annoyed by certain pirates, but i just move on. first time was when i anchored in a storm as its hard to manage the direction your heading in and fix the occasional hole, got jumped by a galley and sunk me, they patched my holes and camped by ship, i scuttled my boat and issue solved, they then proceeded to chase me around the map, i had nothing but i wanted to waste their time, after about and hour or so of chasing they gave up lol
second time i thought i thew a chest of sorrow overboard as i was getting chased by another galley, but somehow bugged and sank me.Some tactics i use to counter galleys are below, almost all have worked for me.
- If i see a ship in port while i go loot i goto another, common sense.
- If a galley is chasing me go against the wind, sloops seem to be quicker and goto the nearest port that is in direction of the head wind, beach your boat and cash in as much as you can.
- Never carry more than 2-3 chests on board
- Use islands and go around them/in between rocks and chuck U turns, galleys have c**p turning circles
- gun powder kegs are your friend
- Alot of the times in these beta tests etc, alot of players are there to kill you and will try to ram you and then spawn kill, go very close to a island and jump of and let your ship sail into oblivion, when they see the mermaid and do a U-Turn go back to your ship and now you have basically lost them. If they dont see the mermaid they will just chase your ship till it crashes and realise theres no one there
- Go into the red zone alot of galleys will follow you there and just do a U turn when u start taking water, the galley will be in the red zone for a lot longer and take more damage, by then you can start peppering it if you wish. Not all ships fall for this.
- hide in those random archways, when a ship is chasing you go into it drop anchor under it, raise sails and raise anchor and let it drift into the direction you came in from, galleys cant go in there and will go around, when they do drop canvas and off you go.
Unfortantualy all these can be counted by experienced players.
I will prefer a sloop over a galley any day.@touchdown1504 the whole point of the game is for pvp and to steal others treasure and loot, rare would have to make a pve and pvp option for players that don’t want to be attacked but the whole point of excitement is to worry about being sunk the better the crew and better the pirate the less likely to be sunk.
@azbat360 So you're saying if someone decided to be nice, they're being the pirate who they want to be, but if they're NOT being nice, then they aren't being the pirate they want to be?? I'm failing to see what you're saying/disagreeing with. That's all

Hmm, according to the website the point of the game is to become a Pirate Legend?
REPUTATION AND REWARD
There's no talking your way to infamy in Sea of Thieves! The only way to build a reputation with the region's Trading Companies is to successfully complete the voyages they offer at outposts. Getting the job done will net you an immediate reward, and the more voyages you vanquish the more you'll rise up through the Company's ranks, taking on trickier tasks, gaining their trust and earning yourself prestigious titles and unique items.BECOMING A LEGEND
Every Trading Company is unique, as are the opportunities they offer. On one voyage you may be asked to acquire merchant cargo and safeguard it through perilous waters, while another will see you intent on hunting hostiles to claim a bounty. As their names become famed and their status ever more celebrated, well-practised pirates tend to set their sights on an even greater goal: tracking down the fabled Athena's Fortune!@azbat360 That makes a lot more sense when phrased that way. I'll agree with you there. I don't know if it fits the vision Rare has of the game, but I can understand what you mean by they can't do what they want to do.

I'm so confused as to why this is such a big thread..
This, @Zaakery, is why this is such a big thread ;)
@katttruewalker the game would be boring if other ships never came at you to sink the boat. The main goal is YES to become a pirate legend but you can only be and the safe carpet for so long to the point where the game would be literally just sailing your ship which you are fully capable of doing as long as you don’t run into somebody else. You are suppose to value everything on the ship to make it more entertaining because different boats hold different values if you are a good player you won’t have to worry about getting sunk because it only makes you a better player. I know the way they are going about the game and it’s brilliant. If it was just a boating pirate game it would be called boating and pirates. It’s called sea of thieves for a reason lol everyone is a thieve, trying to get more out of the other player whether it’s stealing from others boats or sinking them it’s fair and square.
Recommence tu verras@x-snowklown-x Yes, I agree, but what that suggests to me is that pure pvp might well be less rewarding than raising your reputation with the Trading Companies via the questing system.
At the moment you can turn in any chests with the Gold Hoarder, but what of the Merchant faction? If those are specific timed delivery quests, then it's likely that just turning in the animals might be less useful than completing specific tasks?
As @J4dio mentions in another thread - it's quite feasible to sail and play the way you want to without engaging in combat, unless you wish to. Spending over a year sailing the Sea of Thieves, I would agree with what he says here:
Yes there are many ways to kill people, but there are just as many ways to not let them kill you, or to defend yourself, and even more many ways to help other people out, and make some friends.
https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/31790/so-what-s-going-to-be-done-to-combat-griefers/80
@katttruewalker ya and that’s the whole moral of the game pirates weren’t always friends with eachother, you could run across someone and they could have every intention in the world to screw you over but you as a player have to make the choices as a pirate to decide the right thing. Otherwise you could see yourself losing 20-30 chest ready to cash in a blink of an eye. Be wise pirates and make sure everyone knows how to use the boats or help teach them if you know more then your crew it will only help you in the long run.
@santakrew No, having a PvE and PvP server choice would ruin the feel of the game, you need a choice but this is the wrong one. The reason is that your defining what your going to be doing by giving the choice. PvP would go to that server and adventurers looking for loot would go to PvE. you would lose the aspect of not knowing adventure and keeping guard. Instead you would get a lackluster no story PvE experience or a battle royal on the sea. You need both together to work.
The solution is 'solo only' or 'solo and group' server choice. This means as a solo player you still get all the adventure and risk but when you do come to a fight its equal. The second option gives you the chance as a solo with skill to still fight bigger crews alone or join a crew and sail the word. This is the win win option for all.
While I understand my solution falls short of those that just want to play pve only BUT this games entire mechanic does not work for PvE only. How would RAIDs work? what is the risk when doing transport missions? You would literally just sail around an empty ocean picking up boxes. This was it keeps the tension and interaction elements but also stops you being frustrated with a game that is hugely unbalanced against solo players.
@king-ron maybe some said this, but I have no time to read through all these replies. Here's my input:
I have had experienced this plenty of times, but there's many ways to avoid this. First and foremost, avoid any occupied outposts at all costs, if you're afraid. Secondly, scuttle your ship. You'll lose any treasure, yes, but that's just how it is in the pirate world. Also, keep in mind that even I have been tempted to do PVP only, and not to spawn camp and troll, but to sink their ships and take any booty.
The beta had little to do, so players are going to do their own thing, but I can ALMOST guarantee that upon release with so much more to do, so many items to farm gold for, the forts, the Kraken, and possibly many other hidden things, that people will be busy doing quests than merely attacking. Just play it safe knowing there's populate outposts. I play solo as much as 4 Mans, and I've actually experienced less struggle on solo since I have full control of where I'm going and all the decisions I wanna make. Don't let this avoid your purchase of this game.
@kawaii-dumpling exactly and responses like this are super positive and as long as everyone is on the same page and understand the way this game is meant to work it will be a blast. Ya it’s going to suck to sink but hey when you fall you can’t just sit there and deal with it you got to pick it back up and do it again. Practice makes perfect game is totally worth the money in my eyes. Most unique concept I have ever seen.
@king-ron "What a great experience Sea of (Thieves) has been. Now it's time to turn in my hard earned loot. I guess they call it Sea of (thieves) because of all the poor skeletons treasure We get to steal LOL. Oh LOOK, fellow (Thieves) are parked at that island. Maybe we can talk about all the skeleton treasure we have stolen. They are taking out their guns, must be excited to show off what their hard earned loot has got them. Oh and now they are firing their cannons to solute my arrival. Woah boy, that one came awfully close to hitting me. Wait what are you doing!!! THATS MY TREASURE! Why do you keep killing me, I DONT UNDERSTAND, STAHP, SCREEEEEEEEEEEEECH."
-Runs to sea of thieves forum-
"Change this game RIGHT NOW, Or nobody will EVER buy it!!!"Now on to a more serious note... Why did you sail to an outpost that had a ship, and why are you basing the entire games experience on your first bad experience?
@azbat360 I can play just fine solo. In fact, some of my greatest hauls have been on solo, as well as some of my most memorable moments and I never play solo aggressively. The game should not change to cater the bad/inexperienced players. They are the ones solely responsible for what kind of experience they want to have. Just most players are used to things being easy first then ramping up thanks to artificial progression, this game is all about REAL progression. And if a player isn't willing to learn from their mistakes and improve, then a game like this is not for them. And we NEED a lot more games like this. This game when compared to games like ark and pubg is NOWHERE NEAR the level of grieving and toxicity and even with the current mechanics there is ALWAYS a way to avoid the campers and griefers.
I don't understand where everyone gets this idea that Solo is supposed to be easier or just as easy as playing with a crew... When solo, as the game itself explains, this is for experienced players, This means you're likely to get people taking advantage of the fact you are alone, it is what they do, it is what pirates do.
If you choose to go solo, you choose to challenge yourself against bigger threats than just the sea and it's wrath. In the words of the infamous Space Pirate, Captain Malcolm Reynolds, If someone ever tries to kill you, You kill em' right back
Just throwing in my 2 cents. I played solo exclusively during the entire scale test weekend, and I loved it.
Yes, you have to be extremely cautious of other ships, but it's nice to be able to just focus and do things at your own pace. I got a lot more done solo than I ever did in a full crew.
Successfully juking a galleon is one of the best experiences I've had in a video game. I fully intend to primarily play solo, unless friends/family want to play together.
In response to people complaining about campers at outposts, all you have to do is circuit the island once to make sure there are no ships or mermaids around, then you're good to go.
@king-ron
I know what you mean, but it's a tricky situation.
For now playing solo always requires a bit of paranoia to stay alive as long as possible.
Running into friendly or aggressive other crews is just luck-based, but it seems like the aggressive players are more common. You always have to be aware, run back to the shores and look around after every single step of a riddle or after exploring a small part of an island.
Espacially when you are quite new to the game, playing solo is very difficult, maybe teaming up with some random players to hear some tipps and tricks helps to get started.I often play solo too, i surely lost more of my own ships then i sank enemy ships and i just have to admit that this is a part of it.
Actually i hopw - like many other expect it to work out - that the crews just hunting for smaller ships are getting bored quickly. It is a lot of fun to just sail around, explore the world, shoot yourself out of the cannon onto the mountains of Plunder Outpost... the usual stuff.
Maybe searching in the XBox groups for a crew that shares your playing style and go exploring with a Galleon would be an alternative? That would scare of some other players and in case of a fight you have just more backup.
