Sea of Thieves Price tag

  • I was so looking forward to the full version of this game having been part of the Alpha for a long while.

But here in Australia the price on the Microsoft store is $99.95 AUD.

    I mean what the hell?

    WHY SO MUCH??

The game is fun, but not that fun, yeeesh!!

  • @beizelby72 Not sure what the exchange rate is like but it was about £50 here. Perhaps a typo?
I know there's quite a lot of disparity with Australian game releases though

  • @beizelby72

Hi there yeah was about €50 here thats a normal price for game arround here also when i realy like something i do not mind the price to much good way to support them early on.

  • @plusebo where are you from?

  • Most games in the USA are $60, which converts to (today) 45 British Pounds and 77 AUD.

BUT, none of those prices include taxes. Some US states charge 10% sales tax, making the game cost $66.

  • I remember my first time in USA, Florida, I was about 14 and buying shoes. Took em to the counter and had tax added on! Being from the UK this was a very strange experience :)

  • it is a full price tag for a full game. i was impressed with not only the visuals in the alpha but the gameplay was almost flawless as well. Current AAA titles are often riddled with issues at launch and SOT has already beaten them in this regard. Im more than happy to pay and i havent heard anything about season pass or other money grabs. super impressed so far.

  • @major2571 Sometimes AAA games have a price tag of €40 (without paid DLC) so €69,99 is for cashcow publishers. We have to stop thinking a full AAA game has to be €69,99. They can sell it for a lower price.

€69,99 is very expensive for a PC game (€59,99 is the maximum) so I'm looking to other ways to get this game for a lower price.

I think they can sell more copies when Sea of Thieves is cheaper.

  • @gulpee-rex you would expect this to be true but in reality game development is far more expensive than most people realize. as such they cannot sell for cheaper. consider these games are often in development for 2-3 years and budgets in the 10's of millions of dollars. The problem is when a AAA title puts out DLC for almost the full cost of the game but is at best sub par conent. I see your point but for everything you get in a game like SOT its easily good value for your dollar.

  • @major2571 They can sell the game cheaper. Even €59,99 is possible for them. The price tag of €69,99 is normal for console gamers. We, PC gamers, never have to pay more than €59,99 for a standard edition of a game.

With a price tag of €69,99 I don't expect paid DLC or microtransactions in a game.

  • @beizelby72 in Germany its 70 Euros and thats a little bit expensive for One game. And i have never seen it before or played it IDk is the Game worth it

  • @beizelby72 Se você ver os preços que nos brasileiros temos que pagar por um game você ficaria perplexo 72% de imposto.

  • @gulpee-rex thats because PC games were basically subsidized to promote pc gaming as a whole and now the pricing is basically holy scripture and developers had to find a recourse for their profit margins without increasing prices > so now we have micro-transactions.

  • Although there are considerable server upkeep costs. It is a little bit to expensive because it is a MMO and the more players are in a MMO the better. So a lower price and the ability to purchase in-game objects/currency would be the better solution.

It is not actually an MMO, it is a "shared world adventure", meaning there are not 100s of people on a persistent server.
That said, between server upkeep and paying all of the experienced staff members who need to stay on to keep adding content, manage live events, handle the community, and whatnot there are continued expenses that need to be paid - the trick is finding a good way to pay for them.

  • @erikinthebakery you mean it isn't a MMORPG but it is a MMO

  • @absorbedgecko90 I mean they have been specifically saying it is not an MMO, they have been calling it a "Shared World Adventure". I'm not sure what all that distinction means to them, and what guesses I could make without breaking the NDA, but that is what they are calling it.

  • games are incredibly expensive to make, mmo's (and not-really-mmo-mmo's) even moreso. sot has been in development for at least two and a half years already; undoubtedly it's been longer than that, but we know by launch it will have been in production at least three years. that's a lot of employee time, equipment, website, forum, marketing, and general production costs to cover. and if they plan to continue to release content post-launch (as they've said they do) on top of normal server and community management costs, they have to be able to cover that, as well. without a leveling system or subscriptions, there aren't a ton of monetization options outside of up-front cost of the game. a lot of games add cosmetic items in cash shops (which are expensive and risky in and of themselves), but with cosmetic upgrades being the "leveling" of sot, that may not be an option, either. not to mention gamers are on high alert for lootboxes and anything that even halfway smells like p2w.

the game is also marketed first and foremost to xbox users. i'm on pc myself, but by all accounts we're an afterthought. so they're naturally going to lean more towards a console price range. there are other new games are priced similarly in the australia shop.

all that to say: the game must be profitable in order to continue a live service.

One benefit SoT may have that many other games don't is that Microsoft seems to be making a sizable investment in the IP and it's promotional side items. There are already announced an art book, a story book, a comic book, a very pretty controller, and a whole bunch of clothes. This is all a pretty big investment for a brand new IP, and it all (hopefully) generates income for the studio to take some of the pressure off of needing to get the post-launch money flowing.

  • @absorbedgecko90 Belgium bought it on the Microsoft Store for pc

  • price is a bit expensive because it's in pre-sale and after a while it will reduce.

  • And Xbox made the gifting option region specific so people could not buy all their games from the cheapest region

  • to expensive ... 69.99€... [mod removed]

  • it does look pricey however....
I do remember in the 90's spending £50 on a SNES game. That's more than £50 now. So games on the whole are the same if not a bit cheaper, sometimes extras are free as well so it's not a shocker for me.
This price does look top end but imagine the extra people and hours they would have paid for, in order to give us this extraordinary Technical Alpha experience. I truly believe that this sort of open development is the future of our gaming industry. It will cost more to do this for the time being, but the product is going to be superior, and, if you are like me, will have a personal attachment to the game. "I helped build that game".
For the future of gaming, I hope it becomes a player driven industry, and this is a way to ensure that, and give "the likes of EA" something to think about.
By the way, I hate using the old EA jab but it's a sentiment everyone gets as it's splashed about. But it's exactly the sort of reputation I'd like eliminated from my beloved environment.

  • @beizelby72 Yea, that seems like a bit much. I've had my doubts about the price tag too. I'm praying the game doesn't turn out like No Man's Sky did for Sony.

  • It's just short of 75€ here in Denmark. I worry a bit about what it'll do to the community, having such a steep price and making it exclusive to Microsoft Store and Windows 10.

  • Seriously, everyone, this is the same price "AAA" Xbox games have been for years. I don't think this is as big a deal as people are making it out to be.

    Gimme gimme gimme!!

  • Hi,

here the game is 70 € (I come from France) it is true that it is a bit expensive yes.
I also bought the controller for 70 €.

But in the end, when we spend a lot of time in game, I think that it is profitable.

And yes: The game is a "AAA"... It is Rare so... I can understand after all !

  • @monsieur-hamuro What does a normal Xbox game cost you, M. Hamuro?

  • @erikinthebakery

Usually here, a normal game for Xbox One have a price of 70 € :) So... Yes... I can said that it is a normal price. Even if it's a bit expensive I think ... But again, yes it's the normal price...

  • Okay let’s be honest you can get it now spend that money get in on the closed beta and have fun. You can wait but it on official release miss out on the closed beta and the black hand out fit. You could also wait till it drops in price you might miss out on some cosmetics that would be holiday themed, but since the game has no level advantage at least when you do join the old players won’t have any advantage over you except experience.

  • I don't really care what the standard price for Xbox games is, since I play on PC, and I've never ever paid 75€ for a game. That price is a deal-killer for me and all of my friends who are interested.

Also, I had a lot of fun with the test, but they'll really have to churn out a boatload of content before release to get up to par with other modern "AAA" games. Two ships, one enemy and a couple of customization options don't really last too long.

EDIT: Is AAA even more than a tag slapped onto newer games to set a higher price?

  • @monsieur-hamuro and you can type that after you played or not ? so i didnt played the game yet. And i dont want to buy a game for 70€ only for the hope ...

  • $108 NZD, guess it's exchange rates
