Just do anything with Hourglass tbh

  • At this point, I will take literally ANYTHING to throw up the gameplay of Hourglass. It's getting so stale. Maybe a new objective based mode, some kind of balance changes, or even just tweaks to existing features in the mode. Could be great to host a fight night as well during these features. Here's a few common things I see people bring up that could be addressed:

    Perma Runners

People who sail away from conflict either constantly or at any given chance they can get, avoiding the core purpose of the gamemode. This both frustrates players having issues with locking down these runners, and allows said runner to go unpunished for the intentional delay, since there's no mechanic in place to prevent it.

I think both and shrinking circle and a timer would be a poor way to handle the match. Some mechanic needs to be in place specifically for the people who permarun. I suggest if no cannonballs are landed within 1-2 minutes in the match, the ship furthest away from the center begins taking less constant Red Sea damage until they re-engage the other boat, or vice versa.

    Cheaters

Arguably there are WAY more cheaters in Hourglass than there are Adventure. It's easier for them to grief the experience of other players. While I know cheaters are banned and have personally had no issues with support banning cheaters after I provide sufficient evidence, it doesn't prevent them from ruining the session.

Now that cross-stamp matchmaking has been introduced, players have no way to avoid encountering these cheaters like beforehand after the first encounter. I think a simple fix to this is just to make the cross-stamp matchmaking a feature you can toggle. This also enables the more competitive players to set up matches between each other.

    Supplies

I think I spend more time moving supplies from barrels and fishing out flags and crates than I do fighting in matches. I think if you win a match against an enemy boat, all supplies in their barrels transfer to yours.

In addition, storage crates also get a "Won in Battle" tag. Until you dive or until another opponent invades you, these crates are 5X faster at storage and retrieving supplies.

Finally, when you vote up the Hourglass, the ship crew can vote to automatically purchase supplies. This locks captaincy and merchant crates (excluding storage crate), instead giving them X4 pines each, x6 mangoes each, x15 bananas & coconuts, x30 cannonballs each, X3 of each Throwable (excluding Bonecallers), and 30 planks each. This is just a nice lil Kickstarter

Do use it and Sail around and fight any ship you come across? That be a new change of pace.

"Gamemode"? No its a Tool, and runners are using a perfectly fine tactic. Outside HG, this still used today. You are free to chase or give up.
Core purpose, Is just PvP (Player vs Player) how those fights play out is up to you and enemy. No rules say you can't fight how you want.

runner to go unpunished for the intentional delay, since there's no mechanic in place to prevent it.

I mean...we do have Cannons we can place on our ships and shoot runners now. :/

A lot of players miss. Server causes misses. So if the lag causes both ships to miss and I get side tracked and sail 'far away' I get punished?
What if a secondary (third party) shows up and I cant hit you, they force me out away from you...does that count as me not attacking you because Im distracted by another ship? Or possible Fog? I hate checking my map to locate.
How about they hit me twice, I go below to Repair, my ship sails little far away. I try to turn toward them 1-2min later...Im taking extra damage because I was repairing?

make the cross-stamp matchmaking a feature you can toggle

Makes me wonder why this wasnt an option before hand. Was it not considered? or did the Dev really think, that feature was what players wanted?

I think I spend more time moving supplies from barrels and fishing out flags and crates than I do fighting in matches.

Player issue. Pick your poison and move.

. I think if you win a match against an enemy boat, all supplies in their barrels transfer to yours.

Again, what if my enemy ship sinks or loses by other means? I technically won..but I didnt sink them Another ship did the job.

storage crates also get a "Won in Battle" tag.

Yeah, I love harpooning those off players Decks and preventing them from using them. Because they were silly by placing it above deck, with EVERYTHING inside xD

these crates are 5X faster at storage and retrieving supplies.

    :/

Finally, when you vote up the Hourglass, the ship crew can vote to automatically purchase supplies.

Hope that is a Toggle option. I hate wasting gold on supplies I wont use.

  • @burnbacon Running is not a "perfectly fine tactic" when you OPT IN to a fight. You have specifically chosen to fight someone, running is not fighting them. The goal of Hourglass is to sink your opponent, if you are not trying to do that you are not actually playing the game. And not in a "uR pLaYiNg iT wRoNg" kind of way but a literal you are refusing to engage with the core mechanic of the game mode kind of way. If you choose to fight someone, don't just run.

"what if my enemy ship sinks or loses by other means? I technically won..but I didnt sink them Another ship did the job."
In hourglass it doesn't matter. They sunk, you get the streak. Doesn't matter if you killed them, or they sailed out without even taking damage, you still get a streak and win XP.

No no, it can be both a tool AND a gamemode. It is a tool that locks you into an arena where a win condition must be met by one of the participants to progress. And running is not a "perfectly fine" tactic. That would be like saying spawn camping with the aim of making your opponent scuttle is a perfectly fine tactic. Both approaches ignore the primary engagement mechanic of the game and rather focus on attacking the opponents real life mental resilience and patience. Spawn camping is just overtly toxic while running is more passively toxic. Can you break a spawn camp? Yes. Can you catch a runner? Yes. Can both situations be difficult and maddeningly time consuming? YES.

And I am over this argument of "you can just give up". Sorry but no. I'm not averse to losing, but I don't want to lose because I wasted 30 minutes trying to play a game with a person who didn't want to engage with the core intent of the game and so I just give up (and potentially lose a streak). Also, if hourglass is a tool to find a fight, and the fight I find is a runner - well that is what 7/10 people will do in Adventure mode so I don't really need to use hourglass to find that.

I mean...we do have Cannons we can place on our ships and shoot runners now. :/

You cannot dive with Cannons of Rage, and most people are going to be diving to HG matches.

Can you read the post before commenting feedback about it? It'll help you understand what people are talking about better 😃

Actually playing the game mode will also help this person understand what people are talking about.
