Personally I feel that taking down 500 skelly ships is a pretty big ask to unlock the Pirate Legend cannons. I'd love to see the commendations requirements adjusted. I'm also interested to know other players thoughts on this.
Legend of the Sea of Thieves
Two best commendations in the game imo are Legend of the sea of thieves and Legendary hunter
the grind behind them isn't easy to cheese, it represents true effort and commitment
Not many commendations in this game offer that. Essentially legend of the sea of thieves succeeds in what pirate legend fails to do imo.

My thought is nope. Suck it up buttercup. How do you think me and my friends from year one felt when that commendation came out. See for us we had already been pirate legend before cursed sails came out and to complete all of the commendations for cursed sails to unlock the bonecrusher stuff you had to sink 200 skeleton galleons. Now sadly not a single one of those 200 Skeleton Galleons counted towards my Legend of the Sea of Thieves. So you can suck it up and get to sinking. Be glad it's only 500 and not 1000 like most of the original year one grade 5 commendations.
@cptnpotbeard
I know what the commendations used to be like, I'm day one myself. Got my Skull Crusher sets, that wasn't too bad given how much the fleet battles appeared back then and how intense they were.BIG HOT STEAMS COMING FROM EARS
NOO!
YOU SHALL EARN IT LIKE THE REST OF US DID BEFORRRRRRRE!In serious note No this is a terrible idea not every comms in the game should be easily done within a day or two there needs to be more commendations that keep people playing but still ensure the grind is somewhat enjoyable and rewarding like Arena. (Rip)
Athena Fortune commendation are supposed to take time to complete and pretty much shows a record of your dedication on the Seas

Let me ask, how would you compensate ALL those who got the commendation and cannons unlocked before the nerf? To not do so would be extremely unfair and cause issue with many of the dedicated player base as you are noticing.
My only suggestion would be the Golden Legendary Cannons to go with the other year 1 PL set items. Never to be obtained again once gifted to those who already have the commendation and not available once the change is announced similar to the good boy set. Sound fair?
My problem with this commendation is that the number of these ships actually about are pitiful nowadays. I actually want to earn the cannons and then still have time enough to use them before I burn out. It's not enough to make it a grind and wash your hands of it, even if the game world changes around it.
I assume anyone who tosses this idea aside with the response of "no, its fine", have almost definitely already done this insane task and want desperately to feel like their effort was not wasted, when in reality, doing it at this current number was already wasted effort, even if they obstinately did it anyway.

No because I already have the golden sailor cannons lol. So what about people like us that already have both lol.
Oh you said golden legendary cannons. Although I guess to me I always considered that they fit better with the golden banana boat better than the standard pl boat. Honestly all of the other pieces do. They were definitely designed with the banana boat in mind.
Give me a Black and Silver version of the Banana boat if you're gonna lower it and I'll be happy. Lol

I said golden LEGENDARY cannons, to match all the others of the set. The stuff that was given out if you got to PL before March 30th? i believe 2019:
lol you got me with the ninja edit!

Overachiever Cannons...
Meh, I would want something that would end up being super rare AND being a legendary commendation change, be a legendary set cosmetic type cannon. I honestly think golden legendary style cannons could look pretty cool especially if it had the glowing jade athena's fortune emblem like the blunderbuss.

LOL, I have not completed it yet and absolutely do not want it dumbed down. It is not insane, you just have to be dedicated which seems like you do not want to be.
It is fine as it is, deal with it.
Meh...it's not bad. I agree with @wolfmanbush ...it's one of the best grinds with a solid reward in the game that can't really be cheesed.
I rock the "Legend of the Sea of Thieves" title way more than I rock "Legendary Thief"... Which has become like the Gold Curse of titles...the cheese has pretty much made it unimpressive.
Unfortunately, SOT struggles with "difficult" vs "tedious"... They are not the same. Very little about SOT is actually "difficult" per instance.
I'd much rather things were actually hard instead of just having to complete them 50, 100, 240, 500+ times...
It's my favorite title! Take it slowly and farm all the roaming skelly ships / skelly fleets you find. They also drop barnacled chests that let you unlock the silent barnacle stuff. If you sink skelly ships constantly you will have the commendation in no time. It took me like 6 months with no pressure.
Nah, I got that done passively over time.
The ones that I think are insane are the ones that require you to do 500 or something voyages of any faction.
I am just never going to do that.
There’s too much else to do in the game. And traditional voyages as they stand now are kind of boring by comparison.
I maxed out everything a long time ago, having done like 70 voyages for each faction.@wolfzbane7541
Look at it this way, you can grind skeleton ships, sell barnacle chests, and sell loot. That'll give you Legendary cannons, the Silent Barnacle set, and the money to buy both! There's not a lot of hard-to-complete commendations left out there. And sailing 1000 nautical miles on AF voyages was much more time consuming (though you can grind that on the side as well).
Commendations just give you a way to focus your sessions for the coming weeks. In my case, I've been playing with someone who needs the 25 Generous Gift commendation. So our focus is skeleton forts.
So a long commendation doesn't have to mean that you play more, just that when you do play, try and work on a commendation.I say, let's get some more hard-to-complete commendations out there and tie some cool new cosmetics to it. Maybe with the potential Reaper's Bones/Merrick developments out there, we'll see some of that.

Skeleton fleet was never really gone...flameheart/ghost fleet was gone a few weeks
@wolfzbane7541 the 500 skelly ships is easy, especially with the fleet events. This is in no way a overly bug ask to do. It is something you will get over time

It wasn't at it's location...it was south of shipwreck bay, the skeleton fleet location is north from the reapers hideout...it wasn't really gone, a bug caused it to be not spawning for a little while, a week or so, but nothing else

It was close though - probably too close to each other so they would have interfered with each other. Or might have kept people away from the Killer Whale while they intended to do the Adventure.
From the Release Notes
With the wreck of the Killer Whale now cleared, the area has been reclaimed by the skeletal hordes. Crews may once again spy the ominous ship cloud in the sky, signifying an encounter with a Skeleton Fleet.

From the release notes 2.5.2
So after the event...if you look at the release notes from 2.5.11 and 2.5.12:https://www.seaofthieves.com/de/release-notes/2.5.1.1#adventures-text-item-1
https://www.seaofthieves.com/de/release-notes/2.5.1.2
First, there is nothing mentioned about the skellie fleet beeing deactivated
Second, I'm sure in the first week of the adventure I still saw skellie ships and fleets, they disappeared after the update one week later, so we got 1 week with skellie fleets and 2 weeks without it...so with it beeing too close to each other isn't true, look at the map, there is much space between them, the sea dogs tavern
