Sea of Thieves Trans Flag

  • I just think it would be a neat addition for pride month as a sail or flag :)

There was a thread recently where I put a lot of my opinions on something like this, it was revolving around a suggestion for a pride curse. Since the thread was recent I'd like to put more time in between getting into it again. I do think the thread has many unique and valuable views though and perhaps you would be interested in checking it out sometime.

I like the colors and although I disagree with bringing in a specific design I think the colors could be used for a unique design that would fit in with the game well and would give people another option for a cosmetic, which I think would be nice and would serve more pirates that play the game.

  • @wolfmanbush I get it, I just really want some more representation

@wolfmanbush I get it, I just really want some more representation

    Why?

I mean, you already free to roleplay and express your Pirate the way you want to. There has literally never been a limitation to your needs and fantasies.

  • There is already a flag you can fly, the rainbow flag.

The rainbow flag is a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and LGBT social movements.

  • @fred-fisheye I just get this feeling of contentment and happiness when I get to truly represent myself by running a trans flag whenever I can. For once I feel proud to be myself

  • @withmyapologies I guess it’s just sorta odd flying that one for two reasons

1: The rainbow flag is less of gender identity and more romantic attraction

2: The Rainbow flag has been turned into the troll flag

  • @apple-crab2148 The pride flag was added on pride month a few years ago.
Would be nice to see a trans flag or something along those lines too.

Meanwhile, I've really enjoyed the ascetics of the Splashtail Sail and ship set. Though the fact that I enjoy Hunter's Call also rather adds to that too.

Absolutely 100% please never! Games should ditance themselves from politics as far as they can. [mod edit] Please oh please never take stance on politics when you make a game.

  • People's existence is not 'politics'.

Another good way for more representation to exist in the game, other then adding some flag or cosmetic, is to mix it up with the relationships that exist in the game.

So far the only known relationships of characters in game are those between characters of opposite genders. Such as Rose and George, and Merrick and his wife. Same sex marriage was a known thing on the seas with pirates. It had its own name, Matelotage (x, x). France even tried to send pirates women to try to get them to stop marring eachother. Even without the historical aspect, it would still be nice to have diversity of relationships reflected, much as straight relationships are reflected with the already present relationships. The diversity would be nice.

  • @wyvernkraehe
People's existence is not politics. Transflag in game is politics.

  • @wyvernkraehe
No one wants or needs your gender studies or representations into any game at all. Please keep your political hurdygurdy out of any gaming community.

It's a rainbow flag. Not a climpse towards any existing flag nor any specific meaning. It's a rainbow flag.

A Rainbow LGBT Pride flag. Added during pride month.
A pride flag and shirt, in a sea of thieves tweet celebrating pride mounth

    This suggests you're wrong...

They clearly added it for that reason, to represent those communities.

  • @withmyapologies I'm pretty sure the flag existed before that, the tweet was just pointing it out.

I'll give you that, however it wasn't added during pride month.

  • @d3adst1ck Perhaps, but it doesn't change the fact that it was added for that reason. Everyone knows this, or else like @apple-crab2148 metioned, it wouldn't have became a 'troll flag' of sorts.

If it was just a standard rainbow flag and had a ship set to match, I may have been inclined to believe otherwise.

Seems like an assumption to me (probably a good one, but an assumption none the less).

  • Ahoy!

Just a gentle reminder that trans rights are human rights and are not political. We stand with our trans brothers and sisters, as well as all other LGBTQ+ members and will always stand by their right to exist, love and celebrate themselves without persecution or judgment.

I will leave this thread up for now, with the hope that it fosters healthy discussion around representation in-game but please know @apple-crab2148 that we have not only seen this thread and heard you, but the several that have come before and it has been raised with the team.

It is definitely worth hunting out some of the other threads where people have raised not only the idea of a trans flag, but other inclusive ideas that represent the wide scope of the pirates we have on the seas.

    Thanks,
    j0toro

  • @d3adst1ck It was prior to 2020, but still during Pride Month, which is June.
It was added in the 1.1.2 update, June 13th, 2018, and has been advertised and held up on posts during Pride months.
SoT wiki flag description: A new flag has been added to all pirates' flag inventory! Article 1 of the Pirate Code states that, "Everyone is welcome on the Sea of Thieves regardless of age, gender, race, sexuality, nationality or creed."

It says something and is a little sad that this would even be found an issue and to be debated over.

  • [Mod Edit]

  • @lovelocc I mean, yes, but also when the official Sea of Thieves Twitter tweets out "Pride month may be coming to an end, but remember that you can fly the many colours whenever you sail with the bold Rainbow Flag!" with a picture of said flag, that makes it pretty obvious what the intent is for anyone without their head buried in the sand...

On the topic of a Trans Flag in game: One, I'm obviously for representation. And I fly the Rainbow Flag every time I set sail. However, the rainbow flag has the advantage of also being just that: a rainbow. And as Lovelocc demonstrated here, people can pretend it's just a pretty rainbow flag and has nothing to do with anything else.

I would 100% support the Trans flag being included in Sea of Thieves. I do, however, at least understand some of the good-faith arguments against such a thing. There are, as far as I can tell, no other flags of any kind of representation in the game. No BLM flags, no political party flags, and even specifically stated by the devs, no country flags so that people would not gang up on others from certain nations. Representation matters, absolutely. I think one potential issue is there would be many such calls for representation as well, including potentially religious, non-inclusive, etc groups which could potentially devolve the Sea into people getting targeted due to what they are choosing to represent. I've had plenty of it when I fly the Rainbow Flag anyway, and I would argue it might be worse for certain other groups.

Now, I understand the "slippery slope" argument isn't necessarily a good one either, and has been used to try to keep people from their rights in the past, so I understand the potentially precarious ground I'm walking. But I do understand wanting to keep the seas as free of the potential for targeting anyone, be that based on nationality or gender or orientation or religion, etc.

The call for inclusion and representation is a good one, however, and you bring up several very good points about the shown relationships in the game. From this, I would urge rare to, in future lore/content, showcase members of the LGBTQ+ community by having NPC's be explicit members of that community. Representation is important, and I see no reason why future story content could not include a known Trans character or a same-sex couple, etc.

@Apple-Crab2148 I sincerely hope you don't take offense to anything I have said, as sometimes my words aren't as correct as my intention. I fully support your call for representation and hope Rare hears it.

  • @lovelocc said in Sea of Thieves Trans Flag:

From the 1.1.2 patch notes, which are dated June 2018

"Rainbow Flag - A new flag has been added to all pirates' flag inventory! Article 1 of the Pirate Code states that, "Everyone is welcome on the Sea of Thieves regardless of age, gender, race, sexuality, nationality or creed.""

So yes, it was during a pride month.

  • @withmyapologies Correct source would have solved this a few posts ago.

… so human rights can not be considered political? 😳

No matter how you feel about the topic itself, this sentence is clearly wrong, sorry.

Good points made, and support this in particular.
There could also possibly be a story of a Matelotage or aspect of it in game which could be a nice nod not just to representation but to pirates life of the past as well.

You are mixing things up here. Anything can be turned into a political topic, that doesn't mean it's fundamentally political.

  • As this has turned in to arguments and attempts to cause general unrest, we will go ahead and be dropping anchor on this thread now. Thank you and fair winds, sailors.
