Just got on for the first time in a while last night. Successfully beat a stronghold with a couple buddies while fighting off another crew. Loaded up all the loot and took off. At this point our ship is out of cannonballs and food from fighting pirates and fortress waves, then a skeleton galleon pops out of the water and a meg at the same time. We basically tried to repair and run for as long as our health lasted and we died. This morning I played some more by myself on a sloop, had an encounter with a meg and defeated it but as I coasted over to get the loot a kraken showed up. The meg was hard enough for a single player on a sloop. I would’ve been incredibly satisfied if we had gotten the loot from the fortress or if I had gotten the loot from the Meg, but it seems like the game didn’t want to let me have it even with everything I had gone through to get it. This game is awesome, but it would be nice if there was a timer between giant enemy events or something along those lines. Thanks.

I can't speak for the meg or the cursed ships, but did you know that the kraken isn't really random? They only show up on a random ship during the 10 or so minutes in between event clouds. Keep an eye to the sky, and if there are no unusual clouds to see, then get out of open water as fast as you can unless you want to be unlucky. Doing this automatically helps you eliminate 1 of the 3 threats from occurring.
@omnipotence13 I have to agree with MasterKG117 here, I've been playing on and off since release and a couple weeks ago I was on with some friends. We were on a brig and didn't have much loot on our ship. However, a ghost Galleon appeared and proceeded to anchor ball us literally 30 times in a row. Im not saying make them easier, Im just saying fix the glitches. (amazing game btw)

Welcome to the game, and the forums, bro.
Sadly, you're not off to a good start if you judge the game when you barely have any experience with it.

The game is supposed to throw you a curve-ball every now and again, such is the pirate's life.
Only a kraken and meg? That's honestly easy to deal with as long as there aren't any enemy players attacking you simultaneously.
Skelly ship and meg? Slightly harder, but still manageable.
My most Pirate's Life moment was when i was doing an athena voyage in the devil's roar with my friend on a sloop.
We were sailing past Ruby's Fall, and a skeleton from the island started shooting at us, no big deal, then a skeleton ship with anchor balls spawned, and dropped our anchor, we can still make this work, finally managed to raise anchor, kraken spawned, oh no this is a problem we're still stuck, we started firing at the skeleton ship but missed and hit the Megalodon that just spawned, aggroing it, okay i'm starting to panic now... Ruby's Fall's volcano is erupting... GG.
The only thing missing from that encounter was player ships and the storm... Almost a jackpot of pirate misfortune. It was one of my proudest moments in this game! The term "Pirate's Life" means to meet your potentially brutal misfortune, on your quest for fortune.
The game isn't trying hard to kill you, you simply got unlucky. :P
@sweltering-nick I've had a meg, a kraken, a cursed ship, and a pirate ship at night during a storm. Brutal. No volcano, but the lightning more than made up for it.

I always pick up a rowboat when I can. It really has helped me in so many situations. Sink by too too many world events? Who cares, load up that loot in the rowboat and row your happy self to an outpost. "All aboard the rowboat!"
Exactly! I read so many of these posts and wonder, “Where was your rowboat?” Grab the loot, row to a nearby island to stash it safely out of sight (don’t leave it in the boat), and sail back to it with your brand new ship. Easy peazy! The rowboat is like having training wheels on your ship.
@ghostpaw Haha, sometimes I just row around without my boat for a bit. Once, a crew and I docked a rowboat to an unsuspecting Galleon in the DR! They were not happy to see us while the volcano blew them to pieces!

This has to be a joke right? The PvE encounters have been nerfed into the ground multiple times, they're a joke. How did you lose to the meg, it's literally shoot it when it's in range and go below deck when it comes to bite. Repair the holes and repeat.
@masterkg117 said in The game tries too hard to kill you:
Then a good suggestion would be to make the player be able to raise or lower the difficulty, so that noobs like myself can have mercy
They do. Ship size actually has an effect on how difficult these enemies are. Krakens for example? Are a joke on a Sloop. If you sink against a Kraken while on a Sloop then you really need to rethink on what you are doing because the Kraken is honestly the easiest thing to fight on a Sloop. Requires very minimal work. Even on a Solo Sloop. The Megalodon can be a bigger threat since it has a chance of attacking your boat from an angle where your cannons aren't facing it.

and go below deck when it comes to bite.
Or shoot it twice in a row to stop the bite. It's possible to easily kill a meg in less than a minute without taking a single hit. Only go below deck if it is going to bite the front end or back end of your ship since your cannons can't reach it.

These encounters are already far too easy. Load up supplies better, don't use all of your supplies on skeletons or bosses. But please don't ask them to further nerf threats. We want a little challenge
Hi there, do solo?
@snowfire Solo is not a challenge in the slightest when it comes to PVE. It is only challenging in PVP. When it comes to PVP it is only challenging as you cannot be in two places at once. As long as you know the effective strategies for dealing with the AI and are fairly decent at the game you should be fine. (Maybe my standards for fairly decent are too high?)
Taking on multiple encounters at once solo is the only place where it is actually fun because of the challenge, as making tiny mistakes can kill you. The problem is that the AI are not that smart but at the same time are also not that hard by sheer strength. They basically just spam you to death which is very easy to counter.
Also, even if they were hard as a solo player, that is not basis for nerfing an encounter. You are playing at 1/4 the recommended player count. You should do 1/4th as well as a 4 man crew. Lets say the encounters were balanced around being challenging for the average (in this case average is actually fairly decent at the game and not horrible like the average player is in actuality) 4 man crew. It should be impossible for the average 1 man crew to beat it balance wise. But instead Rare has made it so that it is easier to beat it on the smaller ships than it is to beat it on the larger ships.

Hi there, do solo?
All the time. The encounters are trivial solo on a sloop. YouTube and the forums here have a lot of good advice on how to handle them if you need help.
@masterkg117 Welcome to SoT forum. As you can see new players get told off quite quickly in here. The players who have been playing this game for a while dont remember what it's like to be a new player and dump quite badly on anyone who votes for a bit of balance.
My advice? Find people to play with asap and dont bother asking for change in here. I tried for a long time. These forums are locked down by people who fear change.@roguedk I would say it's more the community are fed up with these posts where people don't try to get better. We have all been there, overwhelmed by one thing or two on the seas. If OP simply asked how to deal with these threats, it wouldn't have been an issue. Instead, they whine and complain about the game being too hard and quit at the first sign of major trouble. People making these posts don't look and see if their skills are an issue and need improvement.
The majority of the community has no problem with these threats, as they have learned to counter them instead of complain. It has become an annoying habit of people to rant about this game when they simply need to practice and get better. This is coming from someone who was terrible at all mechanics regarding SoT when I started. If I can succeed at this game, anyone can. It just takes practice.
@roguedk Why do you say this on every post? Like yeah, no kidding we're fed up with players that spend one day on the seas, get sunk by a meg and complain about balance. We've been there too, but we actually got better, instead of asking for the game to cater to our skill level, or lack thereof.

Ill tell you why: Because no game should cater to only the "hardcore" playerbase. Especially a game that promotes itself to look like it could be enjoyed by everyone. Certain games you expect to be hard. Going into Darksouls you know what your getting into. SoT is different. It can be both social, casual and hardcore so naturally people expect different things from it going in.
I don't see why SoT community has taken such a stand against people wanting a bit of casual fun. It very much feels like if you cant make others suffer then your not worthy of playing SoT. Total BS.
Instead of trying to close game off to casual players, why not check how you treat them and find a nice middleground where everyone can have some fun ?@roguedk We don't mistreat casual pirates or close the seas off to them (only the Shroud can do that). We treat them exactly as every pirate expects to be treated - like a pirate. That's your middle-ground. Also, the whole PvE = easy and PvP = hard happens to strike a nice balance (easy + hard = balanced).

People are overstating the frequency of aggressive behavior. Look at the number of posts containing a phrase like “I lost hours of work because a crew came out of nowhere and sank me!” On the surface, when you see a bunch of them it appears that this is all too common. But think about it. They were left to do their own thing for hours. HOURS! Next, most people who play never come to the forums to say they enjoyed their time on the seas. It is someone who has a very extreme response to the game who shows up to make their one or two posts to vent frustration over a bad session. It creates a biased sample that can be misleading if someone does not realize what is happening.
A couple of weeks ago the game had a fishing event. This took hours to complete and no one attacked us while we hung out just tossing our lines into the water. Most players had similar, rather sedate sessions as they worked on this. The claim that the seas are filled with bloodthirsty pirates determined to sink everything in sight “for the lulz” is false. Most crews work on PvE content until an opportunity arises. Heck, even then most crews just go on about their business. I like to bait galleons with my sloop and most don’t take it. If a player is truly getting attacked like crazy every session then they are doing things that make them look like easy prey. Parking with their anchor set and sails down is a huge tell that the player/crew is going to be easy. Cannons firing also gets a lot of attention in an area. Park on the “far side” of an island to hide your ship from most traffic. The truth is, I can sail for hours and see no action as I work. You’re welcome to jump on my sloop one day and see how little happens. I’ll run through an entire Athena voyage and I will not have problems doing it. You wouldn’t have to do anything. The seas are just not that active with other crews beating on each other. It will be a long CASUAL session.
HArdcorre and casual aside, I agree, sometimes too many things happen at the same time, and its neither fun or logical. Kraken and megs are mythical/ legendary beings, only spoken in folklore and what not. In other words encounters should be a bit rare, but sometimes it just feels ridiculous. I've had kraken sometimes appear 3 times on me in the same playing session. There's nothing legendary about this beast at that rate, it's just common. Meg and cursed ship rates are okay, but not when they are all activated at the same time.
