Pirate is reeling in backwards

  • This still erks me since Insider testing, and yet it made it to release.
Our pirate reels in the line BACKWARDS.

The reel on 99.99% of fishing reels in forward and down. Not back towards you.

The way our pirate is reeling is in reverse, which would let line go out.

  • @uberkull is there a reason it spins that way? couldn't it simply be switched to work the way it does in the game?

  • ... and here I thought I was too OCD. :P

  • Well, I fish in real life. I have baitcasting reels, spinning reels, closed-face reels.

When you reel in line for such a long time in real life, you notice basic things about fishing. . A reel is geared, even simple ones. Power comes from pushing forward and down which engages the gears in the reel to work for you to gain more leverage.

My guess is the designers don’t fish. ☺️

Maybe, but only when followed by "and chips"! :)

  • Still never caught a fish, seems my Pirate is reeling backwards which lets line go out to sea....

  • @uberkull Reel underneath the rod in the game... not above it - as in the image you provided. Take the rod in your gif and flip it over... then he'd be reeling the same way they do in the game. Also, you have to consider the time period on which this is based. They may be basing these off of fishing reels of that time.

  • @uberkull That was something that irked me as well. I use to fish with my grandfather (started when I was about 3 or 4) and I've never seen a reel that is spun towards the fisherman.

A rather strange aesthetics choice by the developers...

Not how it works. Baitcasting reels are top. Spinning reels are bottom. Both adjust the direction to wind the handle forward and down. Both are seen in the pics of my OP.

The reel our Pirate has is like a direct drive reel, or a fly fishing reel. But it also seems to have a drag which is the clicking when reeling in a fish thats fighting(not the cracking of the rod, different sound). So, the reel our pirate has never existed in Pirate days. Drag and direct drive.

I just think Rare wants to keep our Pirates slightly goofy and funny. So we get backwards reeling.

  • @uberkull All I know is that the line goes into the top of the reel and it looks to be a single action - as you say - fly type reel that is set on the bottom of the rod. Made up or not - matching the way fishing works today or not, the reeling direction makes sense with how they have set it visually.

Haha...wasn’t meaning to argue it. 😃

The point of fishing reels is they were geared to give you power. By applying a forward and down power, the gear wound the line back and around. Multiple gears to give you geared power from the turn. Also, a ratio exists, one turn of the handle equals 5-8 turns of the spool.

Regardless of the ‘art’, the feel is just off. Leaving the spool and line alone, they could fix the reeling animation to be correct, forward and down, and the line would still come onto the reel at the top of the spool. And people would ‘get it’.

Have you ever done the fishing pool dance at some wedding? Ya know the goofy dance where you cast out a line on your imaginary pole? How do you naturally reel in your imaginary fish? Try it now...see?

  • @uberkull Love seeing a fellow angler. Hope you're ready for the upcoming summer bite, whatever you fish :)
It also kind of irked me about the reel rotation, but I give it a pass for now. I'm sure it'll get fixed eventually, if enough people point it out. Gotta expect it this close after first launch.

Hi there! I fish mainly freshwater and often focus on the strategy around Bass fishing. I’m not one to throw a line in and sit back, but I sure would never pass that up!

I am more of a structure fisherman. Moving from spot to spot on my boat. I look for areas where i think the fish are. The art of the hunt is as fun as the catch.

Anyways, I don’t want to take away from the excellent job Rare did on the Fishing mechanic and the fish art. It’s excellent. I think with some tweaks, it could actually be ‘perfect’.
