Crows nest signals

  • One option to make lights on the ship a bit more practical would be to put one at the top of the mast in the crows nest with a radial menu to choose a color. It would be a great way to signal other alliance ships or other players in general. Certain colors would mean a distress call or an offer of alliance or truce etc. It would also be a way to cause confusion and set traps.

Ship's lights make you very visible from far away, especially at night but right now they are pretty much only for show as extinguishing them really gives no disadvantage. You can still see by moonlight fairly easily. Darkness at sea should be as perilous as dense fog but I can see why it's not in this game. It would be an interesting twist though if on moonless nights the night was so dark that it required lights just to get around.

I agree with the idea of a light on the crows nest, it should be simple to add and would be cool to use.

  • @m1sterpunch darkness is a great idea. I already enjoy a similar concept, the fog. Maybe make the seas very dark every new moon.

It sounds like you basically want crows nest flags to be visible from very far. Even then, alliance flags and rogue flags are already visible from great distances.

  • But then what would be the purpose of flags?

Flags are not visible from far away. Lights on ships are easy to see and it's also easier to see the color from a further distance that you could see a certain color flag as skins don't render on ships just coming into visible range.

  • @m1sterpunch what about semaphore I would love to see that in game

  • You can see at night!? On my 4K HDR TV, I can't see squat without a lantern because my darks are darker than dark (and at the recommended settings too!).
