Anyone got an exact number on how to count nautical miles?
A crew mate got the OoS commendation for sailing the big 500/1000 so we counted squares until it hit 501
We believe it to be roughly 6 map squares to 1 nautical mile
Nautical miles
I was going to make almost the very same post.
I sailed in a straight line, in good weather, keeping track of when the miles counter clicked over. I reckoned on between 7 and 8 map grids for the mile, so close to your reckoning.
That would make the map something around 4 miles wide and high.
I remember seeing a video in which Rare talked about the distance at which you see other ships and how they increased it to improve the frequency of doing so. But I seem to remember them using kilometres!!!

I think you're both about right. From my testing, the map is approx. 4 nautical miles each direction (width and height).
So, for someone trying to get the "Sail 75 nautical miles for (insert faction here) voyages" commendation they would have to sail around the entire map at least 5 times.
