Why Does the game have to merge servers?

    if you are lucky to be in an empty server then good luck to you I say but rare are against this.

    Patch Note Resolved an issue which could cause players to fail to migrate and remain on low population servers.

    not only do I hate it but its a pain in the backside. I have just been part of a bad side of this.

    I was at an outpost and being chased by 2 sloops working together they just wanted to keep sinking me. I skuttled my ship I went to another outpost and there they were. they must be hunting players at outposts. I decided to leave the server clicked leave game I went on a voyage I got 2 captain chests 3 seafarers and 2 skulls and a tea chest I found on a sunken ship. I was heading to an outpost and was feeling happy. I dropped anchor looked ahead from the crows nest the outpost was dead no ship anywhere to be seen. I pulled up my anchor and MERGE SESSION kicks in and who do I find at the outpost yup those damn sloops I lost everything all because RARE have a h*****n about merging servers. I cant think of any other game that forces you out of the server your in and puts you into another because your server is quiet.

    Lol its nice to be alone once in a while to get stuff done. But without that threat you gonna get bored fast

    I kinda like the idea of there being servers with different numbers of players. Only by a few in either direction. Don't know the exact number but lets go with 6 ships. Sometimes you're in a server with 8-9 (rare), or 3-4 (more rare, but not by much) with no way of being sure.

    Yeah I am not a fan of that fix either. I am kind of hoping they will undo the fix.

    They want you to feel a sense of danger while your sailing. Without players providing danger the games a kind of bland sailing simulator with c****y ai enemies.

    I have to say I had the same experience last night since patch and had such a bad run I just logged off and went to bed. I personally dislike the decision but can see why they are doing it. It would be nice if there were some reprieve period though if you've been smashed all night on high pop servers. People say it's boring without the threat but it's equally boring if all you are doing is reboarding a shop and losing your loot.

    @evil-wolf-snipe Lucky enough?! Man I hate getting stuck on those boring servers, sailing around for ages with nobody in sight. Its so boring, looking out into the misty distance, no masts around, no danger, what a snooze.

    Even though the patch said merging would be a common occurrence moving forward...last night we had a ghostly server and an uncontested skeleton fort.

    Seems to be kind of random.

    So much this! Just last week I spent an entire hour searching for ships to sink on what turned out to be an empty server. I was literally the ONLY person on that entire server!

    I guess this is just Rares idea of making sure some basic parts of the game are still available to all players.
    They want risk vs. reward as part of the game, they want players to encounter another ship every 15-30 minutes and they want players to be able to socialize. So for all this stuff the server merge is just a tool.
    Sailing around on an empty server can be relaxing, i agree. But Rare would have to ignore the mentioned goals if we keep roaming empty lobbies.

    @mrbrocksego Totally agree - I'd been getting a weird feeling over the last couple of weeks, like I was the only person alive in the world... (shudder)

    Much as it's nice to have a bit of space sometimes, a shared world adventure is no fun if you're not sharing the world with anyone!

    @evil-wolf-snipe Well the servers have the capacity of holding 6 ships at a max of 24 players per server (It is not big servers like in other Multiplayer games)

    Too merge servers is a brilliant idea in my opinion, the game would get boring if you are all alone 24/7. All of us playing this game knows that it is a Multiplayer game and that meens you will face other players, it is not a single player game.

    But I do admit that you got into a unlucky situation. I would probably have taken a brea kfor a couple of hours after that encounter xD.

    This. Ive learned you have to play with people later in the game. Sometimes crews are wacky but sailing on a galleon instead of on a sloop alone is highly favorable

    Why do they do it? Because you're not supposed to be on empty servers, getting ez loot without any risk or challenge. And to say other games don't server merge, is incorrect. Many games even impose minimum player limits before a lobby/game will start. Because these games are designed with an intended number of players to fulfill the experience.

    I think everyone can agree that ships just popping in on an unoccupied outpost as you approach it sucks.

    @evil-wolf-snipe how on earth can you see a problem with this? You kept your loot whats on your ship is transfered with you. If I lose something to server migration I'm ok with this because it NEEDS to happen. It's an unfair exploit that should be bannable where you force yourself into an empty servers.

    I did notice more ships just seemingly popping up the other night but it wasn't too bad. Only thing that annoyed me was As soon as me and our crew spawned at an outpost and apparently a galleon was coming right for our anchored ship and of course they crashed into it and sunk it. I wouldn't mind a couple minutes to collect some bananas in peace and get on a cute outfit lol.

    @ve111a You're posts are usually much more sensible than this. He's just stating human nature. Sometimes we all just want to be left alone. Nothing wrong with that. He didn't ask them to change the game. He's just highlighting something he was enjoying.

    I didnt force myself into a solo session as stated by someone else all I did was quit the game and rejoin and the area I was in was quiet. the game merged servers and put me back where I was.

    what would be cool is a 5 minutes server warning before it merges threads.

    @evil-wolf-snipe I've heard horror stories from others I've crossed paths with. Stories of the server merging while selling at port and all the loot on the dock disappearing. Or skull keys being useless because of migrations. Haven't had this issue, but I have been server migrated 4 times in a 20 minute span recently.

    Wonder if all servers are on the same in game day cycle. Would suck if you are on a merchant mission and the migration happens and you end up losing out on a contract.

    It should be up to YOU, the player to decide that the server you are on is too quite.
    You have the option to cash-in then jump to another server... if you desire.

    It actually has nothing to do with being alone. Most server based applications have features built in to assure maximum utilization. So for example server A has 22 users and server B has 5. The system will automatically (unless specifically told not to) merge the user base and then divide them between the two servers so that Server A can offload some of it's workload to B. The goal is always to have maximum usability with minimum workload. Now rare may have some sort of other procedure in place to make sure you are not alone on a server but seeing as how PVP is situational and not instanced/forced I don't see that making a lot of sense.

    They are, every server in the game is synchronised to the same time and weather. The only thing that differs from one server to another is the loot randomly spawned on islands, the skull forts and the players.
    I think even the wave simulation is server driven and will be the same - otherwise migration is too jarring and less immersive.

    Not in an online, multiplayer game that is primarily focused on the risk vs reward nature of sailing under a pirate flag with treasure.
    It has been well documented since Alpha and beyond that the game is designed to draw you into encounters at least once every 15 minutes.

    If the server design has a bug that restricts this, then Rare are well within their rights to correct it.

    I have been on the salty end of a sinking or two, but hey, that's the whole point of the game.
