Addressing Safe Zone and Respawning

  • I know this has been done in multiple threads but I wanted to combine them into one thread and give my idea of a possible idea that could solve both issues.

    Safe Zone, personally I don't believe there needs to be one, BUT would a safe zone really be a bad idea? A buddy of mine brought up a good point that most games of this nature have at least some sort of social hub and that is something that Sea of Thieves is lacking. Yes, the outpost could possibly be deemed as a social hub in a way, but not into the full nature of a the normal social hub of most games where you can interact with other players and not have to really worry about anything.

    With that being said, would it be a good idea to maybe put a full on safe social hub in like the center of the map? I think it could be a good idea if implemented properly. And by this I mean, not using it to hide in to hold onto your treasure to avoid being sunk just because you cant outrun or out think your pursuers. My vision/idea for a social hub/safe zone would be an island in the center of the map, enclosed in a giant walled in area that has access points from each direction, North, East, South and West. Once inside these gates, all ship and player damage is removed. ALSO, if you enter these areas WITH TREASURE of any kind, it automatically DESPAWNS off of your ship to prevent any type of hiding to just save your loot. There would need to be enough space left around the island to navigate to move about with multiple ships and have many different docks that can be docked at. Also have everything on the ships be locked to their specific crew as to prevent any theft of resources already acquired. Now here at the hub, if minigames like dice and poker are ever implemented, could all take place in this area. Perhaps even sword tournaments could be implemented with a duel system as well. This area could also be used to introduce new factions or world events. I think this could be a really good way to give people their safe zone they wish to have and also be able to bring more players into one area to interact with one another, rather than most of the hostile engagements most players are constantly running into.

    As for the respawn system....

    I've thought long and h*****n this and read many threads on ideas of how it could be better and definitely needs a little more reworking. My idea for this would include a "Death Tax". Before you get upset by this, let me clarify, by "Death Tax", I mean more of a "Boat Tax". With this idea, the current respawn system could essentially be left intact OR could be redesigned to have a players spawn at a further outposts. Now here is my idea. When a crews ship is sunk, instead of automatically having your new boat sitting there waiting for you, your crew has to purchase a new boat from the shipwright for a certain amount, or a certain amount could be taken from all players to "pay" for the new boat. Though I would not essentially make this very cheap, I would not make it entirely overly expensive either. I think a new ship price of 3-5k per player to get a new ship would be fair as that amount can be made fairly easily. Now once you pay for this ship, have it be placed on a spawn timer as the shipwright still has to build it for you. I think a 2 1/2 to 3 minute timer for this would be a sufficient enough time length that wouldn't be to long, but not to short. I could even see it being set as high as 5 minutes if needed.

    This concept alone would help alleviate much of the constant respawn griefing a lot of people encounter as it makes said crew have to wait a certain amount of time before they can head back into the fight. Currently other than losing all resources and treasure aboard your boat there is no penalty. As a Pirates boat is their most prized possession, it should come with some sort of penalty for losing it, as without it, can you really be considered a Pirate?

    What are everyone's thoughts on these ideas as a possible solution to these issues?
