Mixer Integration - Interact with your viewers

  • After Streaming the last few sessions on Mixer I started to explore what other options/tools mixer offered me a content creator. It was at this time I happened upon the Interactive Reference Documentation which allows mixer integration directly into games. Cool, but I did not think much about it at the time.

However after watching a lot of content produced by the beta and having a conversation with other content creators about how to keep viewers engaged with these very long SoT sessions (often multiple hours). One of the things became clear was the need to interact with your audience: talk to them, make them feel like part of the crew, and that they are not just along for the ride. It was that this point it hit me! Mixer has could have some deep integration with the game to allow my crew and I to directly interact with our viewers.

This could include, but is not limited to the following:

    • Voting for voyages - let my viewers control or have a vote on which quest we set out on?
    • Locking players into the bridge - let my viewers have a say on if the crew member should be locked in the bridge or let out?
    • Care package - Include some random resources, this could be game breaking but hey if it cost 1M sparks maybe not so much...
    • Make the player drunk (for a short time) - Nothing is more entertaining to watch than a drunken fool trying to be useful.
    • Spawn Shark - There is nothing like a shark turning up a just the wrong moment and sometimes as a viewer I find myself rooting for the sharks.

At this point, I turn it over to the community:

    • Do you care about Mixer?
    • Do you want to interact with viewers?
    • Did I miss an option you think should be included?

  • Yes to all of this :D However, if there were official SoT APIs, the community could just make these at no additional burden to the devs.

  • @vitaefinis

As much as agree with you an API would be great! I have another post talking about that.

I don't think an that would be right for this as it would need deep integration into the game with options and menus to invoke in the game to enable / prompt interaction on Mixer.

  • One way it could be handled is spawning enemys for the player to fight. Imagine having your viewers summon a kraken for you to fight. Or they could make a storm appear. Maybe attract enemy pirates.

  • @rgbknights I think this is a fabulous idea - there are plenty of moments in Sea of Thieves where you're presented with a choice and the consequences of those choices are fairly low risk, it could be a great way of making the stories and voyages we sail on more inclusive of the audience :)
