The Big White Elephant in the Room.

  • Hello everyone!

As we near the end of the Closed Beta, I can see that the Forums have become fertile grounds for interesting discussions but also a tonne of c**p.

That being said, I feel like a subject has not been approached with enough attention or any attention at all.

    The White Screen.

I know that the White Screen is used as a loading screen as you load into your Ship and that it is a process that is required mechanically. That's fair. My issue resides that some of us have to suffer these White Screens for a very long time.

As an example, I was playing with my buddy @CNT-Thelrox earlier in the day. As we were enjoying fighting and sinking the other crews of the server, we inevitably had to go through the Ferry of the Damned and a couple of Merm Ports. Thelrox runs on an XBOX and I run on a PC. On several occasions where I died first and had to go through the Gate first, I was stuck on a White Screen for over 30 seconds. Thelrox, on the other hand, would go in second and would spawn in first.

While I can understand that this might be affected due to the Specs of my PC, I cannot express how painful and aggravating it is to be stuck on a White Screen for 30 seconds and hear your Ship gurgle its way down to the abyss.

I feel like these White Screens need to be addressed as they can seriously endanger your survival on the Sea of Thieves.

  • @siriondb I agree. Just the other night I was stuck in the screen for over a minute and could hear my character drowning. I had to quit the session and rejoin to get back in.

  • @siriondb Yeshhh, this has been a complaint ive made a few times amongst a few other things (Skellies, Sword combat, Brigging)

Im personally hoping its just down to needing a few optimisation tweaks and will be apart of the tidy up before release, as it does severely need addressing. It would all but remove spawn campingmon ships if it was gone.

  • @siriondb The white screen is annoying for me too even though it only lasts for approximately 15 seconds for me, which is a huge difference compared to your 30 seconds.

  • please change it to something else than white screen can we not have a screen shot or something which is not as bright .

  • @siriondb
To me, it sometimes seems like the white screen timer has something to do with the scenario that you were in.
If you accidentally fall overboard & use the mermaid or you die falling off a cliff then you spawn back very quickly, but if you are in battle, sinking, or anything else that's quite 'busy' then it seems to take a lot longer!!
So if you die / merm port & not much is happening, you spawn back very quickly.
If you die / merm port when there is a lot of action taking place it takes longer.
This isn't always the case though, but it seems to be like this more often than not.

  • Its definitely an issue on xbox aswell ive had times where its taken 5 seconds but most often its 30 plus seconds

  • Yes!

The white screen "speed" needs to be increased! It sticks around way too long for sure. Hopefully the data pulled from this stress test will help alleviate it.

    Another thing is...

I really hope they replace the "blank white screen" with a splash screen of something. Like a tips and hints screen or various screenshots of the world, etc.

A plain BRIGHT WHITE screen is hell on my eyes while playing in a darkened room at night, and even moreso if I died during night time in the game as well. :(

Takes a while for my eyes to re-adjust right when returning. God forbid I return from it to a camping situation! grrrrr!

  • I've actually had my game remain on the white screen for 5 plus minutes, forcing me to quite the game and lose all my progress.

Yes that situation has happened to me too and it is very very very aggravating.

@ZenZuki I would love to see another screen than a blinding white screen.

At this point, I make sure to have my phone charged next to me so I can catch up on things while I wait for it to load.

    It's ridiculous!

  • I played on Xbox with a buddy on PC during the Stress Test and had a similar experience where our ship got sunk and I was stuck for several minutes in the White Screen of Death (as I've come to call it). Had to quit the game, couldn't pause or anything to back out.
