What distinctive or interesting NPC characters would you like to meet in your travels on the Sea of Thieves? Mk II

  • Redbeard the Blind from my fanart.

    The story behind the character:

Redbeard was one of the most notorious and rich pirates to sail the seas. He never visited the outpost to cash in the treasures he found. He was in love with his gold. He was obsessed with it. His riches grew day by day to the point where the man-of-war that was under his control started sinking slowly, overweighted by his precious metals. They say that he threw some of his own crew members into the sea, just to be able to keep all of his booties.
The ship's condition forced Redbeard and what was left of his crew, to stop at the nearest island - The Sailor's Bounty.
A cave in the island looked like a perfect hiding spot for his treasure. It took over 30 days and nights for the crew to transfer the gold all the way into the deepest part of the underground. Redbeard needed more ships and more men but he didn't want to be separated from his treasures. He didn't trust anyone except his loyal monkey. So he stayed to guard the gold, staring at it without a single blink of his eye for weeks...until the shine from all of the gold blinded him, literally. He lost his sight. The gold's shine imprinted on his iris forever. He was paranoid over the thought that his crew would steal his treasures. He had no choice but to get rid of them once and for all. With the help of his clever monkey, he made sure that no man left the island alive. A once loyal animal that was at his command, became the puppet master, controlling the most feared pirate of them all - Redbeard the blind.

  • @katttruewalker Great thread! I also would like to see more NPCs in the tavern and roaming the outposts, just to breathe some more life into that area. It would also make outpost camping more difficult, if the outpost were busy with various characters (not that we shouldn't keep an eye out for other ships as we drop anchor, of course).

A running theme seems to be aged mariners telling their tales, providing the lore of the Sea of Thieves to it's players, whether it's at the tavern or marooned on an island.

I'm not sure if this counts as an NPC, but I would love to see an albatross, flying along with your ship. Maybe the bird is a bit annoying. You can shoot it, but bad luck may arise if you do so, like your boat starts to take on water, or skeletons spawn on your boat. It's a la "Rime of the Ancient Mariner"--sure, that poem was written post-Golden Age of piracy, but the superstition had to come from somewhere, why not the Sea of Thieves?

  • A royal person like a prince, who has his own bodyguards and servants. He may tries to collect taxes and locks you up, if you don't pay in time.

  • I would love to encounter a cursed character, maybe a talking cat, animal or object that was actually once a pirate, cursed to take on a different form. Or perhaps an evil spirit bound in a form, trying to trick foolish pirates to release it.

Or maybe even something similar to Barbas in Skyrim who was a talking dog and the pet of the Daedric Prince, Clavicus Vile. It would be great to see enemies such as skeleton captains have pets ( or skele -pets) that could lure us to them.

I'm interested to see if Rare cover this part of the pirate life. Assassins Creed did it really well so would be happy if they did something similar. Maybe have just 1 or 2 who randomly hang around a tavern and will give out information for a fee. Could mentioned if another crew had past through recently and what direction they left in.

    Caged Pirates
I'd love to see these dotted around the world with the pirates hurling abuse at you like the gargoyles did in Fable 2.

  • Sorry but there will be no 'useless' NPCs.

  • @katttruewalker

Any characters that would indirectly reference characters from the Monkey Islands series such as Guywood Threepwood etc...

  • I'd wanna see if they can pull Conker out of nowhere and place him on an island, like give us a gold quest to find a specific item for him and we'd get a figurehead for our ship of him or something.

  • I would like to see more interactions with the Merfolk. Lots of opportunities there...for good and ill.

  • @katttruewalker There needs to be a football floating in the water with a bloody hand prince smiley face.... And when you find it, the achievement finding WILSON lol

On serious notes, there should be a Captain Jack Sparrow and Davey Jones. Did have a thought on the sunken ships you find, as its pretty hard to tell when the treasures already gone. I think there should be Journals or maps that can be picked up from the wreckage and lead to treasures or even clues to a pirate or person who gives extra clues.

  • I would like to meet another pirate crew or some "royal navy" npc to deal with. While telling their stories they can give you some choice that will actually affect your game. ( could be some reward or reputation). This could give some more depth to the game itself besides the players choices.
If those Npc could have some real time interaction with the active world and players could make things fun.
As example: In base at the gold earned or ranked, some npc could give us some reward to hunt down some real crew or player and so on

  • @katttruewalker

How about a ghost on the Ferry of the Damned that is out of reach of the players. He/She sings a song or at least hums some ghostly tunes every once in a while.

Just a picture of me floating around during my 30 hour voyage on the Ferry of the Damned

Thanks to @OblivioussNerd for the taking the picture.

  • @maximillianzeus Haha! Awesome idea and I see you've been testing it, popped in to watch for a bit and.... how many candles are there on that ship???

  • @katttruewalker

113 candles are on the ship! 52 are lit and 61 are unlit.

Here are their locations. I counted them many times on my 30 hour voyage on the Ferry of the Damned.
