Good Game Playbook for SoT

  • See Ubisoft's "The Good Game Playbook: Supporting Positive and Safe Gaming for All Players"

"The Good Game Playbook will be automatically sent to players reporting or reported for disruptive behaviour..."

Might be relevant for managing player safety and toxicity in SoT.
Or some content creators can use custom seas to make entertaining versions?

  • This feels more like sharing/promoting an external resource than a feedback or suggestion specifically for Sea of Thieves. I don't really see how it fits this section.

  • Those resources were designed for a different developer / game.
The suggestion is to have a Rare/SoT/Xbox version of these resources. Or partner with similar organizations / experts to produce their own versions.
Or to incorporate ideas from it when they do their update related to toxicity later. I remember hearing something about Rare addressing toxicity based on player feedback surveys in the past - but I'm not sure when that's happening or what specifically would be happening.

Might feel a bit reactive (but still relevant) in light of recent events.
I happened to come across it recently.

  • Problem with this.

Toxic. What is defined as toxic in video games?

  • What is toxic in video games?
I think Rare was working on that - specifically for SoT's context.
But the Ubisoft material might give some ideas on what to consider in this topic.

While browsing the playbook i saw their fairplay program. It covers 4 things to know about tilting:

    1. you can do amazing things if you are in the right mindset.
    • link to trailer where two Pro Gamers reveal how to tame tilt and elevate your competitive game.
    1. Knowing why you tilt is the first step to overcoming it.
    • mood issue
    • miscommunication
    • failure
    • perception of unfairness
    • provocation
    1. actions to defuse own tilt
    • manage mic and chat settings
    • breathe
    • take a break or change game mode
    • ask urself i'm in the right mood to play
    1. if u witness others' bad behavior, u can act (short video linked to each situation below)
    • dealing with flaming
    • dealing with trolls
    • acting against harassment
    • be nice from the start
    • dealing with cheaters
  • But the Ubisoft material might give some ideas on what to consider in this topic.

Again, what one person views as toxic may not be in another's view. Especially when it comes to gameplay.

Example: Many see being sunk when they have nothing to steal as toxic. Another, spawn camping while waiting for ship to sink.

  • I'm sorry, "Be nice from the start,"?? So, we shouldn't go around sinking ships and stealing treasure? Should I remind my opponent to breathe as they're furious they got sunk?

Feel free to adapt/improvise it to SoT-relevant situations.
I'm NOT saying to use it as it is.

    As I've said earlier:
"Those resources were designed for a different developer / game.
The suggestion is to have a Rare/SoT/Xbox version of these resources"

And if u actually clicked on the link and watched the short video, u'll realize that it's about being nice to ur own teammates - leading well from the start of a session helps to reduce toxicity within the team. No guarantees. But it helps.
This is relevant to actual toxicity that we see in SoT open crew and/or SoT official random crews. The specific toxicity here refers to teammates killing each other or sinking their own ship, or using slurs / kys statements against one another in chat.

A bit late to the party on this one but from what I understand of SOT and toxicity, the game tends to attract younger players because of it's aesthetic and where there is emotional immaturity you will find toxicity, this is not solely a young person issue but it does have a lot to do with it. The above coupled with competitive game play and the ability to communicate in real time is all of the ingredients necessary for the perfect storm. On top of all of this you also have a pecking order establishing itself based on bragging rights represented by titles and cosmetics which encourages the "I have this so I know better" mentality, this is particularly notable with individuals sporting high level servants skelly cosmetics 😂

One of the things I have learned in life is that of all the things you can control, other people are not something you can. You can be nice, you can show good sportsmanship and treat others as you wish to be treated yourself but that won't prevent others from behaving badly.

You do tend to get a feeling about a crew you are in after the first five minutes of play, sometimes it takes a little longer for someone to begin to show their true colours sadly but that's people for ya. You take the risk by joining LFG crews or open crews and if your crew mates are unpleasant, obnoxious, arrogant, toxic etc. leave the session and find another crew until one feels right for you. As for HG, I always disable other crew communications to protect my peace while I try to enjoy the only competitive mode the game has on offer. If people are slinging insults and slurs my way, they are piddling in the wind because I hear, see and speak no evil 😂

Yeah no, I don't click on random links thanks.

Also, I've sailed with plenty of crews in the years playing this game. If a crew is toxic, I simply log and don't play with them anymore. I don't bother having a therapy session with them.

If you can't be bothered to look into the contents of the suggestion, just say so and leave.
These are not random links. You can google it and find these reputable company resources yourself. Ubisoft is a EUR 700M market capitalization gaming company.
Gaming companies can work together to build solutions to shared problems together - like dealing with toxicity in video games.
And if not work together, u can always learn from others who faced similar problems.

Please do not add mis-information here. My suggestion does NOT include having a therapy session with a toxic crew.
You definitely show that you do NOT understand my suggestion.
If you want to criticize, at least understand what it is you're trying to criticize.
I will not deal with your strawman arguments.

Feel free to leave this comment thread.

Sorry but people can do all kinds of things with links and claim there safe and they secretly do stuff behind the scenes.

    Respectfully, not everyone clicks everything.

So far works both ways. What you claim can be true but maybe not. You don’t represent the company, or work for them. Heck I rather someone from rare post it instead.

As for the therapy thing. It sorta true, if you don’t like something just leave don’t stick around and get annoyed, upset and have bad time. Only to later complain about the experience.

You do know you don’t have to reply to them right? And it’s an open post, anyone can post there thoughts, views and feelings on the matter.
If you truely feel upset about someone not agreeing with you, don’t argue. Accept there words and move on.

Not everything is black and white. Not everything you said can be said be true. Or even work.
Frankly it silly to discuss toxic matters in SoT and compare what other companies plan to do.

Again you don’t have to reply. Comment or engage.

Are you having a bad day? Would you like to talk about it? Please remember to take deep breaths.
No, I won't be clicking on any links from someone I don't know that claims it'll take me to a "reputable site." As far as me adding misinformation, if you don't like how your crew is treating you, you can leave, or record and report.
I don't see anyone having a therapy session with their crewmates. This is Sea of Thieves, not Dr. Phil.
Remember to please use the "I" statement, instead of telling people to leave the forum thread. Also please refrain from making accusations, just describe how you feel.
