  • Just like Ark :/

  • @burnbacon

If by "just like" you mean without any dinosaurs, fewer survival conditions, completely different plot (18th century piracy), with a proper story and questlines, and the ability to build/upgrade/design ships... then I guess?

Also, you can use a shovel as a weapon.

This game is everything skull & bones wanted to be, but could never be, due to development constraints or whatever their excuse was for cutting out so much content. If you wanted to compare it to ATLAS, that would have made more sense, though that game also lacked a lot of what makes this game beautiful. Of course in all my years of interacting with you, I've never known you to make any sense at all, so it makes perfect sense to me why you said "just like Ark."

  • What impresses me most about Windrose is how much is there for an Early Access title and how polished it is at this stage. I've played 50 hours in a week and I'm mopping up bits in the first area before I move on (in fairness, I have spent a large chunk of that time building up our outpost).

Sure, it's not doing anything revolutionary, but it's doing it extremely well. This is how games evolve. A lot of people are comparing it to Valheim and Black Flag, which I think is fair, but it doesn't detract from the fact that they've delivered on the promise so far.

Hopefully, it will go to consoles soon enough, so more folk can check it out. I know Xbox has Game Preview, so it's possible. The controller support is decent enough and, while improvements can certainly be made, I've played similar games with far worse implementation. I literally only use KBM when I'm entering text.

    Game is super fun.

  • @realstyli Just curious, but are you playing on a hosted or dedicated server? And if dedicated, who do you use?

My only issue with my experience so far isn't even on Windrose's end, but due to Nitrado's limitations. When playing in hosted sessions, the gameplay is smooth (even when connecting to friends in the UK), but Nitrado uses some "dynamic RAM" woo-woo that doesn't seem dynamic enough imho lol. Not sure what sort of agreement they had going into this that earned Nitrado free ad space on the main menu, but Windrose would be better off directing people to G-portal, it seems.

I probably spent as much time as you building & just learned how to download my world via WinSCP last night. Going straight to a new host when I have the time today.

  • I went with Nitrado. I'll be honest, I'm not very experienced with dedicated servers so went with the easiest option.

It seems okay to me, not had an excessive amount of lag. I've experienced worse on Sea of Thieves.
