So... How are we feeling after that direct?

  • I've got a lot of thoughts going through my mind, honestly.

On surface level, I will give credit where due; Custom Seas being free is overall a major W. They could have made it a paid feature, but they didn't (though a paid feature being a headline season feature would undoubtedly and understandably upset everyone).

Hopeful outpost cosmetic changes are a welcome idea as well, and look forward to hearing more.

But... I don't know, this just feels kind of bleak? I get we have another direct in a couple months, but not showing (or hinting) towards anything outside Custom Seas and Weekender doesn't exactly instill me with great hopes for a major future.

Now in fairness, I don't think huge expectations for this direct were super founded either, but I was at least hoping for info on the next 1-3 seasons, or at least and again, a few hints - something to inspire some hope for a somewhat longer-term future.

I don't doubt Custom Seas will create a myriad of content for people of all community niches, but I fear that giving players these keys is a segue into a potential maintenance mode in the near future (I really hope I'm wrong, and trying not to be TOO doom-y).

I suppose time will tell - I'm excited to try out custom seas, and we will see what June brings us.

Let me know what you think/how you're feeling!

  • I don't know man, direct was pretty bleak. if there's really nothing else for season 20, the game might be entering maintenance mode.

But they may announce something on the Xbox game showcase on the 7th, I remember back when they started the 3 act structure they claimed the big updates would happen outside of the seasonal structure... maybe they are gonna drop something big then instead?

they would get a bigger audience on the Xbox game showcase than the direct... so maybe?

    only time will tell.

  • Gold for Content Creators, Tdmers, Screenshots artists.
ABSOLUTE NOTHING for all the rest of the playerbase.
And now we have to wait even more time for the GMU to appear (hoping that they didn't scrapped even that).

  • @spectergames706 I'm sort of tempering expectations on the XGS announcement. The last few have been admittedly either low energy (smugglers) or something we already knew about (Burning Blade).

I don't think there's a completely 0% chance of something brand new that we haven't seen being shown, but I also feel it's a very, VERY low chance. I sincerely doubt we will ever get anything on the level of hype that A Pirate's Life gave, though. But I hope I'm wrong.

We're also getting another direct sometime this summer (not sure if it coincides with XGS or is after). So time will tell, I guess.

  • @blazebeard2313 Yeah, I'm kind of in the same boat with how I feel on that. If nothing else, we can be happy that a good chunk of the people wanting TDM/fights will probably make their own servers, and be playing within them and it'll hopefully make High Seas/Hourglass more lively.

  • @valor-omega Honestly, not hopeful at all, this was the perfect opportunity to give us... something! But no teasers or announcements about anything outside of customs seas were really depressing. We have no plan on how they're going to stop making the same mistakes, just promises of doing better and self-congratulation on not releasing completely broken updates.

I'd say the Xbox Showcase is the last chance they have to excite the playerbase. If that fails, not many people are gonna bother playing season 20.

  • CS will release and within week or month, something that wasnt added or "want" will be demanded.
Or people will see they cant 'actually play and unlock' stuff in CS...and demand that changed :P

  • @blazebeard2313 It's not that it doesn't cater to the majority of the playerbase as custom servers will allow for people to practice with their friends etc. It's much like Minecraft where people have free reign over anything in creative mode (which caters to everyone), but just in SoT

  • The Community Direct that could have been an email

The Community Direct that was as indirect of a direct as a bullet curved by Angelina Jolie

The Community direct that…. Missed the Mark

after pointing at it so much as the moment more info would become available

Not to mention the gaslighting by Chapman saying that the gold economy was never on their restructuring plans was honestly maddening:

We know that the currency you earn from your adventures at sea should be a fundamental part of the core loop of Sea of Thieves. However, with both Doubloons and gold, they've lost their value over time. We feel it's time to bring them back as a core part of the Sea of Thieves experience, and we're starting here with Doubloons.

    Cut the bs mates….

  • @kianonboard players practised in the real game for 8 years. And before there wasn't even safer seas. This stuff is just another bootlick for content creators and something that could be implemented with minimal effort. Personally, I'll play sot only on those damn weekender for the doubloons and 5 days on Custom Seas launch to grind the pass, and that's it. I hope we get something relevant for the lore, like the GMU in S21, otherwise I'll just drop the game. They are transforming a unique game in a mainstream game (same creative mode as minecraft, same pass structure as fortnite). Zero Originality.

  • I’m not disappointed in the sense that I wasn’t expecting any major announcements about the game’s future.
However, one question that arises is how they’ll fund it.
Now that we know CS will be free, the Emporium will have less content, and the Plunder Pass is changing, how are they going to fund it?
In my opinion, either they’re preparing a big announcement for the Xbox Showcase in June—a collaboration that’s sure to attract a lot of players (which is the most likely scenario)— and the most natural collaboration will be a continuation of the one we started with Disney on A Pirate Life - or the prices of cosmetics will go up.

As for the rest, I’m waiting until June; I won’t judge Season 20 until then.

  • @valor-omega

They should have made custom seas paid. It's nice to have it be free for everyone, but it seems like monetization has been an issue for the game for a long time now.

It wouldn't have been unreasonable at all to ask for a subscription for what will probably be a lot of server maintenance on their end, plus a lot of players would've been willing to pay for it. Seems like a missed revenue stream that wouldn't have gotten a lot of pushback.

Would rather they get money from an actual valuable feature that isn't core to the game, vs continuing to put a majority of new cosmetics in the plunder pass.

  • @valor-omega Honestly I'm worried they might still package some features as paid because they we testing allowing players to use some and not others. Also most of the announcements just seemed to be buissness focused rather than development.

  • Loooooove the fact custom seas is available to everyone for free, that’s a huuuuge W in my books.

Season pass model changes are welcomed cause it’s become stale the way it is now, a refresh especially in UI is always gonna make me happy.

The only thing I’m a little ehhhh about is they didn’t talk about beyond season 20. Hoped for more discussion about what’s coming in the future, especially to do with the GMU, but I guess they will talk about it once they know what they’re going to deliver and not make the same mistakes from before.

Overall though, I feel good about the direct! 😁

  • It felt as if their audience was a boardroom rather than a playerbase

  • "Welcome (back) to the Sea Dog's Arena! Crew one of our your glorious ships, and compete against rivals old friends, to gain silver for fun."

Tbh this is the one thing that is going to make me reinstall this game. After a friend told me all the score system options they have for custom servers, I would have been happy purchasing/renting one I didn't know it was going to be free until I read OP. Major W.

Naval. TDM. Camp wars. No one to whine about "toxicity." PvP & GGs. I'm looking forward to it.

  • While I think it could have done with a tease for future plans, I don't feel much different than I did before it.

Custom Seas being free is nice. Not sure how much I'd use it, but I'm sure there are many folk who will be delighted to have it.

No changes to plans for the Bilge Rate Weekender is sad to see, but there's still some time for them to assess feedback.

The season pass changes seem good. Hopefully, we'll get more information on that soon. The "big" item reveal was alright. But seems a bit too much like we're trying to be Fortnite.

Promises not to touch gold, and to rebalance the gold shops vs Emporium, are positive news. But we didn't really get much more information.

All in all, I just get a sense something else is cooking. It all feels eerily similar to pre-APL. With them not charging for Custom Seas, it makes me think the money is coming from somewhere else. But that could be just cope on my part.

Lol ur trolling right? That must be sarcasm, cuz i know 100% this would have been criticized by the community without a question of a doubt. This game is already heavily monetized, the only thing that beats it atm is gacha games where they make u pay for chracters and cosmetics. SoT makes u pay already for what basically is ship and player cosmetic loadouts.

Speaking of which, who exactly is this "Custom/ creator seas" for? Cuz its not for the majority of the playerbase. I guess streamers can be happy now that they wont have to worry about the possible DDOS attacks.

Im just hoping they do have something else big planned, but if theirs a correct time to show it off, it would be for season 20

  • Next vid due does i do expect to hear"we didn't hit the mark" at the start from Dew (sadly it's become his catchphrase as of late).

Season 19 I was already meh on (not a PvP fan on SoT so nothing new for me to really try, cause I suck at it lol).

Season 20 only being "custom seas" isn't exciting for me or my fellow pirates I play with.

At this point I wish they would stop being varge and teasing things when they are in the early stages.

Saying "we have things in the works we will talk about next month" would be better then "plunder passes are getting a overhaul" and not giving much detail.

For me these dev directs feel outta torch. (Don't think them recording them a month before posting is a great idea)

  • honestly.. just more confirms my decision that quitting is the right idea. insane that the twitch drops just going live now are better looking than any of the doubloon removal fomo items they just added. them admitting the doubloon reset was a mistake but at the same time sticking to their guns on it..... why not just delete doubloons altogether? all for the sake of adding a weekend event of recycled content pve discords can cheese? like the idea behind the reset was to make the old returning cosmetics a long term goal but they are going to allow people to farm all the doubloons they need via some tedious cargo voyages which everyone already disliked. we dont like cargo... ok add smugglers as a reskinned cargo.... oh people dont like smugglers. ok delete their doubloons and make them do smuggler voyages to regain doubloons but also lets give them enough doubloons in 1 weekend to buy ALL THE THINGS.... i thought this was a long term fix? also adding a cap... promising they wont do it with gold... ok well i just went to take a look at the shops to finish off my remaining doubloons and everything that has a gold price is so cheap it might as well be free..... get it together man.

the fact that season20 has no content now as well. the gutted half of the hunters call update. they gutted half 2/3 of this seasons update. season20 is all about making old fomo stuff into recurring events. the decision to make custom servers open to everyone is a mixed bag. i think very few people would have paid for more than maybe a month to check it out. it mostly would have been for streamers to host some events but at the same time streamers are too busy streaming to put in the effort to design those events so it would rely on community members to design the event for them.

so having custom seas free to everyone will certainly get more people to play with it. but this game, and the industry as a whole right now has brainwashed us to play for the dopamine hits. we need to collect those cosmetics! games arent about just logging in to have fun any more its about chasing down that achievememt, unlocking those skins, cosmetics baby!!! sea of thieves is insanely guilty of this as the only thing that kept some of us around in the early days with no content was that bi monthly update to go farm some fomo.

so what we have for new content is actually less new cosmetics as we are putting the cash shop on a rotation so now instead of needing multiple new sets per season we only need maybe 1.... and even then maybe only parts of 1 as the new season pass (which actually is a nice change) is going to allow you to kinda pick your own reward between old stuff you dont own rather than having to introduce new stuff. and kind of push you to be like "well i got one item, it looks neat, i should goto the cash shop and complete the set!" we got old season cosmetics on a rotation with the pointless doubloon reset. they have stopped doing emissary ledger rewards for most emissaries. the hunters call set was probably done at the time that patch was released and they are just drip feeding those ledger rewards.

i still say they could charge a monthly fee for full progression safer seas. hate on the idea all you want PVP fans but guess what? that is a massive amount of players that quit the game due to not having them. and as pointed out in the community direct... they need income to keep this ship afloat. and pushing away a vast amount of the player base because of some flawed concept that having this pvp world is MANDATORY. which is why they dont ban people like me who play on pve discords. which is why they havent gone after discords charging people a monthly fee to play on pve servers. IMO this is stealing money from rare. i would rather they actually support it. but we know they cant even balance their own game in terms of item values, currencies, etc. like i think the 30% progression on safer seas was a fair trade off for not having to worry about threats. instead they lowed the reputation cap to an even sadder level. made it full gold/rep for selling... and just made it even more pointless than it already was. without captaincy, without sovereigns, emissary ledgers, and dont try to argue that emissary ledgers are some kind of competitive status symbol. anyone whos played this game has seen the top person on the leader board has like 30+ million points 1 hour after a new month rolls over. pve servers been cheesing this for literally years. heck i reach ledger goals every month i play and thats just playing like 2 days

so yea with custom seas its weird though. because of the reward structure sea of thieves and many other games have imprinted on our brain whats the point in a mode that just gives us freedom to make out own events? theres nothing to gain from it other than just fun. perhaps making a mode neat enough rare might take notice and do something official with. then we look at how warcraft3 had a map editor in it. same concept.. the whole MOBA genre wouldnt even exist if it wasnt for the players having been given such powerful tools to be able to create DoTA.... so is the hopes that having custom seas open to everyone that maybe some fans will help craft something so great that the developers can kinda take that idea and mold it into something official?

custom seas arent custom enough. they are going to give the option to manipulate a lot of stuff... cool. but its not a map editor. dota only exists because not only could we set map triggers IE invisible boxes a player steps in to make something happen. it allowed you to create the whole map. custom seas seems to have a lot of options but also sounds like the host would be more a dungeon master kinda deal where they can manipulate world assets but cant change the actual world. IE removing all the rocks from the water, making our own islands.

all irrelevant though if they dont address the issues which have been plaguing this game since launch and that a huge light was shined on during the fight nights weekend. letting any random troll on the internet have the power to find out the IP of the server anyone playing the game is on and they can easily DDOS that server? not cool.

if we look at the reality of the situation though. custom seas as a feature behind a paywall wouldnt have worked. they have invested well over 2 years into working on this. with the content cut out of season19 and nothing planned for season20.... the choice was obvious. make custom seas the season... so again another season with lack of content. custom seas will be hyped for about a month before the majority of the people are like.... oh i cant make any progress, it takes effort to set these things up.... its kinda pointless. that being said there will surely be a small handful of people passionate enough to make do something neat with custom seas. but honestly.. not enough to be worth it. and unless they are going to add some kinda of custom seas only reward structure.... which i doubt they would do because people could just cheese that. only thing i could see is rather than streamers doing a raffle for their twitch only codes they could maybe make a mini game on custom seas. winner gets the prize. but they clearly are moving away from adding much for new cosmetics to the game.

basically... this game needs money. letting discord pve servers steal a monthly fee that should rightfully belong to rare seems to be a solution. the pvpers will cry about it. but those same pvpers arent buying anything to help fund this games future. pve players have, and would. the number of whales i knew in my time on pve discords who bought every emporium item that was added every single month. but those are also the same people the developers have actively been designing the game to push away.

  • @oinarrow Yeah, I have to agree. I would have very much appreciated at least a HINT towards this supposed content being made outside the seasonal structure.

  • @burnbacon Yeah, probably lol.

  • @worst-tdmer I wouldn't be shocked if eventually aspects of CS were made to be paid; i.e release build is free, but subsequent additions would be locked behind a paywall.

I'm glad it's free though honestly, and I think the game will still continue to be riddled with emporium releases to keep funding going, despite the upcoming rework - I think that only serves to re-release past sets, and new will be on the front page always.

  • @heslashthem Yeah, I like that CS is free, for sure. Going to open up a lot of creative freedom for people and I can absolutely see people making their own series with it, kind of like Red versus Blue or Arby and the Chief.

Agreed on the lack of substance beyond this, though. I think the community would have really appreciated insight into what's beyond, to dispel some of the discontent and worry. If the XGS showcase shows nothing, that's not very compelling..

  • @h0b0jo0e Wow, that's spot on, honestly. You're so right - it's kind of felt like that for a while. I miss the days of when the big wigs (Joe and Craig) would get in front of the camera to address the playerbase and discuss plans of attack. I do appreciate Drew now doing that effectively though, I just feel bad for the guy always having to be the face of bad news, these days..

  • @theblackbellamy Yeah, I feel this will make a lot of the competitive community very happy! It's not an official relaunch of Arena, but it basically is; you get the tavern, you get scoreboards, and can set up ship battles!

  • @valor-omega it hurts even more knowing that custom seas is the mainstream feature rather than alongside other features

  • @valor-omega assuming they have something for showcase 😅
