Ship decoration system

  • Captaincy as a system is a great foundation for other ship-based updates, but we haven't gotten any real meaningful expansions besides more trinkets. I have put together a new system allowing you to switch all those pointless barrels for new furniture and customize already existing parts of the ship. please enjoy!

    New Furniture system
functional pieces of furniture could replace empty areas and useless barrels. nothing that obstructs movement too much of course.
the captain's voyage shelf can also be replaced with one of these features. Rugs can also be added to the floor across more parts of the ship.

(It's important to note that if any holes appear behind the feature, the feature will enter a damaged state, allowing access to the hole. when the hole is fixed, after a short delay the feature repairs itself)

    some ideas

    • Hammock
    • Bookshelf
    • Chair
    • Functional Polyphon (Giant music box-Plays shanties)
    • Drum Kit
    • THE CAPTAINCY PIANO!!!
    • Stone fireplace (not really realistic but would be pretty cool)
    • Grandfather Clock

    The Dresser
For a large number of coins, you can buy an upgraded supply chest that functions as a clothing, vanity, equipment and armory chest, further optimizing your ships' room for more furniture. also outfit presets. it's like the next stage of captaincy.

    Customizing functionality existing ship items

Tired of parts of your ship having the same functionality? now you can dump gold into basically pointless sidegrades that have very niche usages.

You can now change what beverage the Ship's Grog barrel dispenses and add an additional barrel below it.

    • Grog
    • Chef's Grog
    • Near Grog
    • Tea
    • Coffee

You can now purchase 3 separate sidegrades for the map table, all equipable at the same time and each switched to by interacting with the map table.

    • The table is switched to "meeting mode" with stools being pulled from under the table for shared meals and meetings
    • The table is switched to "Game mode", where players can play all sorts of fun games (sold separately)
    • The table is switched to "Plotting table mode" where you get small ship models to move around to plan your conquest.

    The Bed

there is a large chunk of unutilized space between the sloop's bed and where the captain's table is. I propose the rectangle of uselessness becomes another thing that can be upgraded moving the bed from the floor to inside this wall, and possibly even a bunk above it. The area where the bed used to be now has room for furniture.

a working curtain can be bought to separate the bed from the rest of the ship not just in the sloop but all ships, although this curtain is intangible and can be passed right through.

    The Bell
The bell now has a few sidegrades- it can become a sea fort grade bell, or a caged chicken that can squawk on command and also every morning.

For smaller ships, you can also purchase a stool to be tucked under the captain's table, to be pulled out whenever needed.

  • A lot of these seem for just galleon ships.
Mainly because of the location like the sloop bed. Switching it with a hammock would be annoying since you can’t simply walk on it.
Same with bookshelf, where would you put this where it have to be same size and hit box

  • @BurnBacon

Yes, this update would definitely cater to galleons more. However, the proposed system where furniture becomes damaged for hole repair access opens a lot more spaces for decoration. I also imagine some furniture would take the spots of multiple trinket spaces, like the area on the lower deck of the sloop with a floor trinket and useless barrels besides it being a spot for furniture; some furniture can hold even more trinkets. there could be an option to move the vanity, equipment, clothing chest and armory into one tall dresser furniture piece. It's not really a matter of space so much as optimization of it.

as for the sloop bed, there are a lot of possibilities there-personally I'd imagine a second bed can slide out of the wall in exchange for losing that trinket spot, or maybe the hammock can be rolled up and tied to the ceiling?

  • I'm just curious if these added interactive decorations will add to the ping/fps and lag spikes, black screens, etc.? I mean, just looking at Port Merrick drops my FPS, last thing I want is for it to happen to my ship as well.

You should know that when Captaincy first came, there was an issue with one of the bulkhead decorations, where it covered a spot that could be damaged by a cannonball. Since it was such a hassle, they removed the ability to put the picture on that spot. Now you want a decoration to interfere again, but be magically repaired? I don't see how this is needed to be honest.

  • @Europa4033 to clarify, the system I propose makes more places customizable, but when a hole appears the decor becomes broken and intangible until the hole is repaired, thus creating a dynamic where if there is a hole, you can fix it. but if there isn't, you don't need access to that hole and can enjoy the furniture.

basically, the furniture disappears when the hole appears, and reappears a few second after the hole is fixed.

  • @spectergames706

That sounds like a lot of moving parts that need to work perfectly in order to repair something that could cause you to sink. That's a lot of faith in the code that I wouldn't trust to be honest. For example, I've risen up in hourglass without cannons on my ship for some reason, then I've dove to a voyage and come up to find damage and water in my ship as it hit the bottom of the ocean. Last week I fought an invisible meg. I've been sunk when a meg flipped my ship upside down, with no way for me to right it. I've been harpooned to a player's ship and suddenly I can't take my weapon out, and we're to trust that we're going to be able to repair water coming in behind a wall cosmetic and that it'll work perfectly each time? Hmm...

  • Make all the useless furniture in the captains cabin useable.

  • @Europa4033 you are right, current infrastructure probably couldn't handle this update...

I hope we might get news about significant upgrades soon. maybe a rerelease, engine change, sequel, something.
honestly all my recent ideas have had this hope in mind, because like you said, lot of issue with the game's code.
