Why I think a Sea of Thieves "2" Is Happening

  • I have seen and heard a lot of talk about how Sea of Thieves could possibly be getting sunsetted or that Microsoft might "pull the plug."

And while there is no dispute that the game's player base is not in a good spot right now, I don't think that is going to happen.

    Here's why:

First off, I explained what I think would make a good Sea of Thieves 2 in a previous forum post, but didn't explain why I think that is even happening. So I wanted to give what evidence I found that could support the idea of a Sea of Thieves 2. Or some kind of reboot. Everything listed here is based on previous timelines, public statements, patterns, interviews, recent development decisions, etc., and of course speculation.

Rare Ltd's current contract with Microsoft began in 2017 and was stated to be structured as a 10-year plan/agreement. That would explain why Rare won't just drop Xbox One support, even though doing so would do wonders for the game's health. They know that. Their engineers know that. But they are most likely obligated to keep the current version playable on that hardware for the duration of that contract.

In previous Developer Updates, and the last Community Direct, it was confirmed by Drew that the teams had undergone a restructuring. He also explained which teams do which for the current build. I imagine he left out a few too. Now this restructuring could have been partly due to the cancellation of Everwild, but also to maybe go full speed ahead on a sequel for Sea of Thieves. It’s reasonable to speculate that this restructuring allowed a large portion of their 200+ staff to move onto a new large-scale project, while smaller teams maintain and do the bare minimum for the current version of Sea of Thieves.

That would help explain the much slower pace of content in recent years. And given Rare’s long history and experienced staff, it’s hard to believe that their entire workforce is focused only on the current game.

Several partner studios are also contributing to Sea of Thieves development. Including Auroch, Lucid Games, Flix Interactive, and Sprung Studios. All that external manpower and support could only make sense if it were being directed to something bigger. Because it just doesn't make sense that hundreds of people are working on the current Sea of Thieves and it's in the state that it's in.

As many know, in 2024, Rare opened a massive new building on the land of their existing studio space in Twycross called "Barn X." And while it was originally intended to support the development of both Sea of Thieves and Everwild, we found out mid last year that Everwild was unfortunately cancelled. So that building could now be used for a larger Sea of Thieves project rather than just the routine seasonal drip-fed content we've been getting.

In October 2024, we saw Phil Spencer visit Rare. Not only to play Everwild, but also to talk about Sea of Thieves and its future. 1 month later, it was announced that Craig Duncan would be promoted to the new head of Xbox Game Studios, and Joe Neate would take Craig's role as studio head. For those who don't know, Phil Spencer oversees all of Xbox Game Studios.

Craig is very respected in the industry, and he has always given his teams the resources they need to succeed. And when Sea of Thieves had its relatively subpar launch in 2018, it was Craig that took responsibility and got in front of the camera and told players what was going wrong and what they were doing to fix it. And even though Joe is the new head of Rare, Craig would be the one responsible for how much resources/funding Rare gets from Xbox Game Studios. I don't think Craig would just allow Sea of Thieves to have a slow death, even when it may seem like that at times.

We've consistently seen Rare reveal Sea of Thieves content during Xbox Game Showcases every June. (Usually around the 8th or 12th)
    2021: A Pirate's Life
    2022: Captaincy
    2023: Monkey Island
    2024: Flameheart's Return
    2025: The Smugglers League

Based on that pattern, it's only reasonable to expect another announcement that could reveal either Season 20 or 21, a Peter Pan crossover, or a SoT 2. All are completely possible.

Or, and this is less likely, but we could see a Sea of Thieves 2 announcement at The Game Awards. In December 2017, that was when Rare revealed the release date trailer for Sea of Thieves. But like I said, less likely.

On top of all this, there have been multiple in-game development changes to support the idea of a reboot or sequel. Currency resets, combat adjustments, the return of some older cosmetics, FOV increase, Insider Programme refresh, etc. In a very short time, Rare went from "We will never change this, stop asking." to being far more flexible and making bolder moves. And those bolder moves make total sense if you are planning for a future with a rebuilt version of the game.

Also, (and this is a bit of a stretch), we saw in December of 2025, "The Orb Returns" stream, The Widow said "Blade of fire will clash with a grand blade of steel. The unmaking of the world you know. And the end of thieves is coming." She also said when referring to Last Ship Standing "This is but a petty distraction of what is to come." All that, and the upcoming GMU invasion could be the lore reasons for a potential reset of the game. Which I'm totally down for.

If a sequel/reboot does happen, I doubt it will be a literal "Sea of Thieves 2". Instead, I can see a full rebuild and engine upgrade where player progress carries forward (similar to how Counter-Strike 2 replaced CSGO). Maybe also going free to play. That model would allow our pirates, cosmetics, commendations, ships, milestones, and newly reset currency to all migrate over while also giving us a new game entirely.

Call it a conspiracy or copium if you want, but when you line up the restructuring of teams, the 10-year plan/contract, expanding manpower, lore hints, systematic game changes, etc. That possibility of a Sea of Thieves 2 or reboot sounds more and more realistic than it used to.

Everything is pointing towards something massive on the horizon.

  • Those bolder moves also make sense if you are being pressured by your parent company to get your game in working order because the player base has been dwindling for years. We've seen time and time again that rare is not a competent enough dev to make their live service game work properly. They need other studios to help them because they clearly aren't ever hitting the mark.

The GMU is probably their entry point to changing something massive in the game world, but I doubt its to set up a SoT 2. Rare is also not good at hiding things, data miners have already shown so much before it ever goes public. If there was even a trace of SoT 2 in the files, they would sniff it out.

CS2 killed CSGO in my opinion. I played about 1000 hours of it and got to LEM rank before it became CS2 and deleted all the old achievements I was still working on. Rare won't have the capacity to leave both games up and if they erase SoT like Valve erased CSGO, then a lot of players will leave anyways. I certainly will.

Conformitygate made sense too if you overthought about it.

Everything is pointing to SoT shutting down at the end of financial year 2026 or 2027. Constant delays, constant new game breaking bugs, and every update it seems like for every bug they fix, 2 more bugs from 3 updates ago come back.

I love this game, I played 1360 hours of it in 2025 alone. I don't want it to shut down. I still play it almost every day. I wish it could get better but I also wished my great grandpa would get better. Sometimes something just dies.

  • Everyone wants a 2.... World of Warcraft 2. Sea of Thieves 2. Every Quest 2 (which did happen and flopped hard, "You think you do but you don't" sometimes actually is true lol). No doubt in some cases a sequel game could solve a lot of problems. Path of Exile2 is a good example. There was only so much they could do to fix the broken foundation of PoE1. As it has always been a heavily cosmetic driven game they knew there was no way they could make a sequel and not let people carry over the cosmetics they have purchased. Which if the graphics are updated that would mean you gotta redo all those graphics, that's a lot of extra work. Rare hasn't ever shown respect for our past progression, they have un-apologetically changes some cosmetics and in some cases like the Dark Adventurer sails they actually kind of openly mocked people for using them making it a humble brag that they were nerfing them. One of the most expensive cosmetics (not that gold means anything now, but at the time it did). Not even refunding the gold and making us repurchase the new version if we still wanted to complete the set. It was just a "HaHAha you bought it for the cutout and now you have nothing!!!"

So I would fully expect a SoT2 to not carry over our current cosmetics. Or if anything only carry over the cash shop cosmetics. Blizzard games run on their own engine so games like World of Warcraft they have been tweaking whatever they possibly can to try and keep the new expansions feeling somewhat fresh and new with new mechanics and stuff. But the engine is old and has limitations to how much they can modify it. So a new engine could very much make a better game... But will the people want it? Or would it be another Everquest2? Blizzard always thought someday a new MMO will come along and be the "WoW killer" so like companies/developers do sometimes... They came up with a really awful idea. Since they viewed a WoW killer a certainty "If someones going to dethrone WoW as top dog, then it might as well be us!!!" So project Titan was born... It failed to be as fun as WoW, every new "WoW killer" that was released died down super fast. Even at WoWs lowest point it was still making good money. Then they added WoW classic and now it's got something for everyone so why would anyone leave? So Titan was canceled. Stripped for parts, turned into Overwatch, their first game with no story campaign so I ignored it. Then due to mismanagement they ruined that. I always thought blizzard was scheming behind the scenes to make a Starcraft MMO and a Diablo MMO and then they could have 3 MMOs under 1 monthly fee. That way someone gets bored of one MMO well the other 2 have expansions coming out, go try that. It would have retained monthly memberships. Instead nope. Their plan was just to try and create the next big MMO to cannibalize the audience of their other MMO... Madness.

A SoT 2 could be amazing. But it could also flop. If you watch the developer podcasts you will have heard how it's been an on going battle of getting new content in the game without breaking the game. For the longest time they had to reduce the ship limit from 6 to 5 just for server stability sake. They have always been riding the edge of whats possible with the game due to technical limitations. So certainly using the knowledge they have gained over the years would allow them to make a more solid foundation for a new game. But at the same time what would SoT 2 even be? They can't just put out a better looking version of the same game. Then make us replay all the same content. It would need all new ideas. It would have to be a whole different animal. I can't imagine the game would have nearly as many people come back if its SoT just with a new coat of paint. So a SoT2 would have to be maybe just a purely PvP game, a Naval Fortnite. Then transition SoT1 into a PvE game. Then the 2 games would be distinct from each other. I can't imagine they would make a SoT2 and have it be PvE only. But the games need to be drastically different in order to justify boths existence. Then again... Newer hardware could come out and they could just slap a $20 upgrade cost on it so it can run the better graphics and frame rates cough Nintendo cough

Or SoT2 could be a strategy game like command and conquer. I don't think they could simply just do another FPS, PvPvE, limitation of 6 ships per server long tedious commendation grinding game. Similar to World of Warcraft Rare choose to go with a cartoony art style. Which ages better than games with ultra-realistic graphics. The game has always looked good. I don't think there's another game out there than has been able to match SoT in terms of water. Unless we are talking what you can do under the waves anyway. Don't think anyone can top Subnautica on that.

What we really need more than a SoT2 is for Rare to stop worrying about their line graph every month. It's the whole reason for this Act system. It's also caused several content release delays to add 1 kinda minor change to the game. The new molten sands, the reaper forts last season. While changing things up a bit it was rather minor in the grand scheme of things and just slapped some FOMO cosmetics on top so the monthly active users count looks better on paper. What we really need is something they should have been doing all along. Fixes. We have issues 5-8 years old now still not fixed, I get doing 1 big drop and every season things came out broken... But now we just get smaller amounts of broken things every month instead. With very few tweaks or fixes, the new megs for example... While they did improve it a little there is still the issue of the meg flipping your ship. And rather than your ship being like "Oh I'm stuck upside down, I should just flip back" instead Rare thought making it instant sink was a better option? I never played Mass Effect (well not for long, I couldn't get into the first one so wrote off the whole series) but watched a bit of gameplay and the Mako always seemed to be on the verge of flipping over but always magically righted itself. Not sure why our ships don't have a pivot point at the top so if it ever finds itself perfectly 180 degrees upside down it can't just let the rocking of the waves give it that little push to start rolling back over right way up. Basically when they broke every season they would put a smaller team on trying to fix the season while they worked on the next update. This imaginary team that's supposed to be working on Quality of Life updates and polishing up old content seems to have just been re-tasked to be the monthly "We broke the game again" damage control team. Rather than rolling season into season how about a month gap between seasons? A month just for some QoL and polishing updates for the sake of game health. We don't need a SoT2 we need to get that medication for the movie Limitless and buckle down and fix what needs fixing.
