Revisit and improve the pirate generator

  • I wanted to share some thoughts on the Pirate Generator — specifically ways it could be slightly improved to make the experience smoother and more accessible.

    1. Gender and Age Scale Selector
It would be great to have sliders or options for gender and age ranges, so players can more easily generate pirates that better fit their desired aesthetic without relying solely on random rolls. Especially for new players to feel less restricted.

    2. Flat View with Optional Rotation
Currently, the generator spins the pirate around continuously. While this can be fun, it can also make it difficult to examine details or discover hidden features.
A static flat view with a manual rotate option would allow players to inspect their pirate more comfortably and make thoughtful customization choices.

    3. General Usability
Small tweaks like the above could make the pirate creation process more enjoyable, less time-consuming, while still retaining the fun randomness that makes Sea of Thieves unique.

It's more exciting with random pirates. It'd be kinda boring if you could just pick the pirate.

  • @shadowfox327533 The idea isn’t to let people pick a pirate directly—it’d still be randomised, just within a smaller pool to save endless hours of spinning for something they might actually like.

  • @mrtwistnrip

Optional filters would be nice. Gender/Age/Ethnicity perhaps. Or Gender/Age/Body Type.

  • @shenlongkazama Would save a while lot of time. I specifically think it's polarising with new players. And would save them a lot of time just narrowing down the process with a few basic choices as you mention

  • It’s all about the players mindset.

Do you wanna play a game?
Or spend time create a pirate that nobody gonna take the time to look at or appreciate, a pirate you won’t actually see majority of your gaming session unless you emote, shop or die.

Always confuses me why people get so crazy of customization for this game. Has to be “perfect”

  • @burnbacon

It is about mindset — which is exactly why dismissing feedback because it doesn’t match your mindset isn’t very useful.

Some players enjoy jumping straight into voyages. Others enjoy role-play, identity, and presentation — all of which Sea of Thieves actively supports through its generator, cosmetics, emotes, and social design.
Nothing here is asking for a “perfect” pirate or to stop playing the game. These are small usability and accessibility suggestions that reduce friction while keeping the randomness intact.

If customization truly didn’t matter, people wouldn’t already spend hours rerolling pirates — the system itself proves players care.

Your way of playing is valid. It’s just not the only one.

  • @burnbacon its a weird think that we care so much about how our pirate looks. i honestly never could understand how games like this. with an fps camera end up being all about unlocking cosmetics you can only see when you are on the login screen or doing an emote. or like a victory screen in some vs games. but also its all this game had for end game. for me ship cosmetics are certainly far more important because we actually get to see that more often. though even that is limited like we only see the exterior hull when reboarding. i think the trinkets from captain helped fill a much needed void in customization. though now theres too many good ones to choose from combined with limitations of items that cant even be put on a sloop which is all i play on.
to me though the big issue with the character creator is the problem with a lot of this game. it seems from the ground up its all about delaying our playing of the game. while this isnt baldurs gate3 where your likely to spend 1+ hours on character creation the fact that its purely random, maybe with some hidden triggers ie flag a female pirate and allegedly it will show you more female models. but why not just have a gender toggle? in the very least having a thin/fat toggle, male/female/other toggle though not sure if other is needed in this game. the female models arent super busty and cosmetics arent limited to gender so you can kinda pick the frame you prefer and dress how you want which is cool. unlike other games where cosmetics on male models look normal then on women look skimpy.
people have complained about the character creator from day 1 and maybe even the beta? im surprised they never even considered any changes. but its also along the lines of this new setting sail menu hell. wasnt it like 2 clicks to play when the game came out? technically 3 maybe? click start, click ship type, set sail. private crews didnt even exist so it was just pick a ship and gogogo. now its. click, click, click, click, click, click and.... finally set sail! click! i think its a safe bet most of us choose the same options every. single. time. doesnt make sense we have to keep clicking the same stuff every single time we wish to play. though i do know theres a good amount of people who luckily have friends to play with and they get to skip all the nonsense and just going via friends list or the guild menu
