For a long time, seasons have been based almost exclusively on cosmetics and skins, but there's barely any new playable content: the map remains the same, there are no unique ships, and no new mechanics to surprise veteran players.
Umm...Did the most recent Seasons introduce New mechanics? Silly Tools, Disguises? New World Event, New ways to blow stuff up??
Games like Fortnite, Destiny, and GTA Online keep their audiences engaged thanks to constant world changes, spectacular events, and rotating weapons/areas. Sea of Thieves has enormous potential to do the same: new biomes (snow, jungle), epic sea creatures, a 3-player ship, more frequent narrative campaigns, and more.
Well for starters, Fortnite. That its thing. And they add crazy stuff to its universe setup that frankly makes little sense. GTA? I never had a update that got me excited or change the map.
Everytime SoT adds something new, it short lived, shot down by the small % and ends up forgotten. Much like Fortnite...
If the game is limited to cosmetics alone, many players will end up abandoning it because they don't feel any growth.
For someone saying there a Vet, you seem to have missed that is sorta the foundation of the game, and if that is what drives players away. Oh well. Fortnite with its every season changing drove me away because the map changed too much and many cool features removed.
