Tattoo Flash Sheets

  • TLDR:
Tattoos could do with an overhaul; we should also have a system that enables us to:

    • Select individual tattoo designs from a flash sheet
    • Place them anywhere on the pirate
    • Rotate, resize, change colour, etc.

    Hi everyone,

So one of the best parts of SoT is being able to create and roleplay as your own unique pirate, whether that's through clothing, hairstyles, or tattoos. But out of all the customisation options, I feel like tattoos are the one area that could really use some love.

Right now, tattoos only come in fixed sets. You either wear the full thing or nothing at all. And while some of the designs are amazing, it’s a bit jarring when you run into another pirate with the exact same ink. Tattoos in real life are deeply personalthey tell stories, mark experiences, and help express individuality. It would be great if Sea of Thieves reflected that.

So here’s my idea: Tattoo Flash Sheets!

Instead of applying full sets, players would unlock flash sheets (like the ones you'd see at a real tattoo parlour) with themed designs you can pick and place wherever you want. Arms, chest, back, neck, legs, etc. You could also rotate, resize, mirror, or adjust the colour and intensity of each design, giving you much more control and personalisation.

This system could be used alongside the current tattoo sets, which could remain as full-body presets for those who prefer them. But for players who want more creative freedom, flash sheets would open up a whole new layer of expression.

There’s also a great opportunity to expand the world with this. Perhaps we could get a tattoo artist NPC at Outposts, someone like Umbra, who can help apply or preview your tattoos in a small inky studio. Unlocking new flash sheets could come from commendations, Plunder Pass rewards, or the Pirate Emporium. Imagine surviving a kraken encounter and earning a tattoo to mark the tale - it would literally become part of your pirate's story.

Would love to know what you all think. I really believe this could add a meaningful layer to pirate identity and make tattoos feel as personal and story-driven as they’re meant to be.

    Cheers!

  • I do agree that tattoos need some work but I think this system would quickly be abused to make hate group symbols and words/images that violate TOS and could even make the game rating change. You might think it would be hard to do, but I remember in COD Black Ops 2 you could make your own emblem using up to 32 simple shapes, which you could rotate, recolour, etc. Most people used the system as intended, but I saw so many NSFW emblems. So many racist ones. People will unfortunately ruin it, unless the system is SUPER limiting

  • I completely understand your concern, which is why I was thinking of using this system with pre-existing designs. Like, take the 16 sailor tattoo sets you get for free, they're basically a random assortment of individual designs. I was thinking more along the lines of using and moving those designs around rather than using text or creating something from scratch.
