Why is the game so broken?

  • Before people pre-judge I am not here to complain about PVP - I enjoy a good fight as much as the next pirate! I seek it out often with my regular crew and the intense coop battles are part of what keeps the game fresh for me.

But I have been playing since 2019 and I have never seen the game in a worse state that it's current one - game crashes, server crashes, exploits, cheaters, bugs that are now YEARS old as well as new bugs every season that just keep adding to the pile... the list goes on.

It is really testing my patience and I am just wondering if there is a light at the end of the tunnel? I am sick of new content being rammed down my throat and just adding bugs on top of bugs...

Did I just get up on the wrong side of the bed or is there anyone else out there who feels the same way? I am not ready to give up on the aspects of this game that I love and have meant I have spent over 3000 hours immersing myself in this game but damn RARE makes it hard to love this game sometimes...

  • I feel exactly the same. I played since launch in march 2018 and honestly, the decay of the game for me started with closing the Arena and introducing Hour Glass. From my view, the whole diving mechanic introduced the instability in the game that they never got on top of. Since then every update added up on instabilty issues and game breaking exploits leading to the current state.

From a network side, it would have been better for the game to not have diving and have Arena on seperate servers. And I honestly do miss the Arena. Sure, sometimes you got toxic players, but atleast you werent stuck with them in a 1v1 like in hour glass. All in all, Arena was fun and had a good vibe. A vibe that Hour Glass can never match or bring back.

  • I really feel like the anti-cheat has affected stability too, I am no expert but a lot of problems started up for me and my friends when EAC was introduced...

feeel exactly the same...i live in portugal, basically south europe, play this game 6 years i have more than 9k hours at the moment, and didnt see any, literally any improvment On lag matchmaking and hit reg..the only thing they do its realese new stuff, manage minimum bugs and ask ppl to buy from emporium??how can i spend money on a game that literally lags all over even having a good conection (1gbps/500mb up) tested every day,im matched with americans or australians, thats garanted 300 ping, and i cant be matched with 1 european player for more than a week???rare says its geo location...ok geo location its europe..theres servers in spain (less than 100 miles from me)..i really cant understand this..i lost my hope on this team long time ago...ill never buy anything else from rare!they created something awsome, they just cant maintain it!!!sad!

  • The game has been on a steep regression since Siren Shrines and Treasuries were added. It wasn't perfect before that, but it felt and played miles better. It's just been hard regression ever since then and they just keep adding to it.

  • Yeah, I honestly had a better player experience about 4 years ago playing with a terrible connection in Kenya on a console than now with my desktop PC on a wired connection now...

  • i compare Rare as the horses that pull the cart that is steered by Mr Philious Spencer . Rare is for Microsoft a chicken that delivers golden eggs , but Rare itself isn't a company that can put up great numbers in the field , it is still a small company that delivered an triple A game . The pace on which they are forced to bring out content is so high that they simply can't repair bugs or glitches as that would sometimes mean like reprogramming half the game. Microsoft puts the pedal to the metal and leaves hardly any space for repairs .

Rare does give it's best but the MS pace combined with the smart cheaters has lead them in trenchwars against time . And even if the game isn't perfect , they still succeed in letting it run , even with it's flaws . i wouldn't like to be in their shoes as all fingers are pointed at them if something goes wrong , but if MS would not act as greedy as it does and give Rare more time , and if some peoples only life purpose was not winning at all cost , read cheating , then this game would become nearly perfect , as no game is ever perfect. Alas , small numbers , greedy overseer and cheating people decide the outcome of the game in a different way... Sadly , Rare is the scapegoat for all this... And i hope that MS not simply retaliates to this kind of remarks but instead give itself a close look in the mirror... We all love this game and we wouldn't mind a longer delay for new content if it would mean that the game could gain time to bring in those repairs.

  • @clumsy-george true man!!!ahahaah!!Facts!!!

  • You're not the only one feeling this but, as George alluded to above, it's important to have some perspective on the situation.

I've been playing since Open Beta and I don't think the game has ever been in a worse state technically. I don't blame Rare exclusively for this, they're caught between a rock and a hard place - the rock being Microsoft and the hard place being players expecting more and more content. The more content they've added, the more bugs and issues have been introduced.

Rare's communication on the situation has really been their downfall, I feel. I got some flack for my comment on their latest News video where I criticised them saying they need to run a business so they can't just do what folks are asking and stop adding content to fix the game. Really, they should have just said the game health team is coming together and they're going to be heavily focused on improvements. They didn't need to be defensive about it. If the game health improves significantly and quickly, while content is still being added, that'll speak for itself.

Saying they have separate teams focusing on different aspects of the game is all well and good, but players are critical of the very apparent imbalance between microtransactions and the game's state. I don't think it's surprising that they're wondering where the money is going, and if we're just paying Microsoft's ABK acquisition tax.

  • The waves are bigger than ever before. A sloop cannoneer’s visibility is completely blocked by waves so much more than I ever remember. So much so that in a storm with even bigger waves desync issues such as rubber banding, waves clipping through the ship are even more exacerbated. The waves are just monsters now. Somewhere along the way Rare made them bigger.
Bigger waves equals more frustration when firing cannons due to not being able to see what you’re shooting at.

The lag when you approach Reaper’s Hideout is insane even worse than Port Merrick.

High ping results in a lot of frustration. When you reload a cannon just after firing the reload will get canceled and you’ll have to start again. Just in general if you play on high ping you will have to slow down your gameplay so the server can catch up to what you’re doing. Please don’t match we with an hourglass opponent if my ping is above a certain threshold where playability begins to suffer.

If you exit a barrel/storage crate UI while holding a directional key (or holding the joystick in a specific direction) you will notice your pirate won’t move in that direction until you release the key or joystick and try again.

If you ads a weapon and attempt to fire it before it finishes the animation (the ads animation is really short so this is a small window) you will notice it will not fire even though it is loaded.

Rare must have made jumping have server side authentication because you can actually get jump reg now aka you pressed jump and the game says nope you will not jump, try again.

And then abundant pineapples (not a bug) makes it so much more difficult to kill good players. Dumb decision totally nullified other fruit and even most cooked food.

Crashes on series x have been reduced significantly. Crashes on PS5 although I don’t have the console personally I have noticed seem to be an issue still.

Settings not saving for some clients; every time you restart the game you have to change some settings that won’t save back to what you want.

Cannon hitreg on ships is also a thing. You see a cannonball hit an enemy ship from your perspective but according to the server it missed so you don’t get the music and you did no damage. Backtrack tolerance is too low for cannonballs.

Mermaids should spawn faster in adventure like they do in hourglass especially when the reworked blunderbuss drops and pirates will be knocked off their ship more than ever before.

  • @clumsy-george

I don't necessarily disagree with anything you are saying, but 'cheaters' aren't really the reason I am making this post.

Cheaters will always be there - I would love for them to not be but I am realistic, and this is something every game must tackle in a constant fight. But what I think the game needs is attention paid to other aspects - the stability (crashes on both client and server side), various bugs (literally too many to list).

I see the MS are milking this game for all its worth but I think it is important that the active community make it known to the developers at Rare that the game's current state is not in a good place. It could, in an ideal world, provide Rare with leverage to go to MS and make some positive changes.

  • @bekkbloodaxe96

“various bugs (literally too many to list)”

Make the list. Put forth some effort.

  • @savvystraw37257 I don't need to - that's part of the issue. Everyone here knows what I am talking about because these are now new bugs

  • @bekkbloodaxe96

Low effort. What’s the point in typing paragraphs of fluff when you could just list what you think needs to be fixed.

  • @bekkbloodaxe96 *not new bugs (typo correction)

  • @savvystraw37257

I don't see your contribution here as particularly positive anymore so I'll be leaving you to your own opinions. Thank you for your initial post but, respectfully, I'm not going to engage with this interaction from you any further.

  • @bekkbloodaxe96

I put forth some effort. I always do. Take it as you will.

  • This is just my opinion/observation as someone that really only got super into this game (like many others) during covid, and as someone that wasn't into online gaming before this game.

Many online gamers take a lot of things personal and they make a lot of things personal. They see devs as their friends or enemies. Instead of this being just a product that is fun or not, entertainment that is enjoyable or not, it's this personal thing, especially in SoT.

If I felt like many SoT players communicate that they feel I would just leave. I've been here years, daily on the forums. Outside of recognizing a few names and seeing some videos/posts I dunno who the devs are at all. I barely know who anyone is in the SoT networks other than just recognizing names. Frustration/criticism just isn't a personal thing to me. I would just not play this game if I had the "game so broken" mentality.

I'm as passionate about SoT as anyone else but that doesn't change anything, if I don't wanna play I just don't play, if it gets too buggy I'll just move on. Devs did what they could, I do what I can, not a whole lot more to it than that.

Small community, people are cliqued up and talk to each other and all that, I get that, but it's still a product, a game. Either it's fun or it's not. Complaining all day is too normalized in gaming (and most things for that matter). It's been "why is the game so broken" since I have been around. Because it's all a lot of gamers focus on, that's why.

Everyone will justify why they feel it's worse now or why it's worse down the road, that's fine. Everyone gets their opinion based on their experiences and observations. To me it's either making the best out of what exists here or moving on to something else.

Rare doesn't make the game difficult to love, people make it difficult to enjoy, for themselves.

Light at the end of the tunnel? The luxury of gaming is a well lit tunnel.

  • @wolfmanbush

You point out that it is a product - nothing more, nothing less. And that is exactly it - I paid good money to play this game. I expect a certain quality in exchange. Simple as that. If we don't provide feedback, especially on bugs, they cannot know there is a problem.

But it has kind of gone beyond just reporting bugs, I am a bit fed up with reporting the same bugs over and over...

I don't want to just 'make the best of what exists here' I want to see the game get better and better. Or at least not progressively worse...

I don't have an issue with feedback or criticism, I do both every day I see both every day and it's all good, when it's fair.

What I have an issue with is when it goes beyond feedback and criticism and enters what I half jokingly reference as energy vampirism.

Lots of people don't have the frustrations that I have in this game, lots don't have the frustrations you have in this game, lots don't have the general frustrations of the feedback areas. It's not because they are wrong and we are right, it's not because we are more experienced and have been around longer, it's not because some of y'all are more skilled at pvp, it's entirely mindset and approach.

I think gaming should normalize quitting and moving on when it's no longer a sustainable/compatible situation. I also think that quitting and moving on should be in a way that doesn't tear everything down.

This game doesn't improve because of the fits in the community and the spamming and the daily defeatism and discouragement. It improves because of the reporting (bugs/exploits/etc) and the patience. It improves because of the people that try to make this game fun even when it's not doing so great with performance.

Perspective is as important as expression. It is important to acknowledge the issues, it is important to offer constructive criticism, it's also important to realize that filling the wait with a bunch of extra criticism doesn't help anything, it just discourages people.

Imo a common mistake people make is labeling optimism as a form of neglect. People aren't ignoring issues because they find an optimistic way around them, they are contributing in a way that is actually productive. Everyone knows this game struggles with performance, is it necessary to spend all day talking about "broken game" as many do? I don't think it's necessary or helpful.

We gotta fill the wait time with something, it might as well be something more useful than "broken game" "cheater game" etc.

We all get it, buggy game, game with some cheaters, game that doesn't always deliver, just like every other game in the space.

It's also an adventure game that has held its own where many have fallen. It's not perfect but it has lasted because they are offering a quality product to people. It's something that many enjoy. It's not a broken game to many outside of the bubbles and the cliques, it's an adventure game that makes life a little better and/or easier.

  • But I have been playing since 2019 and I have never seen the game in a worse state that it's current one

You dont play enough games then.

game crashes, server crashes, exploits, cheaters, bugs that are now YEARS old as well as new bugs every season that just keep adding to the pile... the list goes on.

Yup, every game Ive played has these random things. But some of these are explained by a simple thing: Players.

  • @wolfmanbush

You are spending a lot of time talking about it for someone who doesn't want to discuss this issue XD

  • @burnbacon You misunderstand me - I play plenty of games some of them pretty poor in comparison as I think you took my meaning. But what I was actually saying is that SoT is currently at its worst state compared to itself in my opinion- no need to compare to other games, that is completely beside the point.

  • @wolfmanbush

We both clearly like the game - wouldn't both be here if we didn't. I am speaking out here so that Rare can understand there are people in the community who would support slower content infil in exchange for time to really work out some kinks in the game.

    @wolfmanbush

There are many people that don't wanna put themselves out there is a feedback area. Opinions and views that are held but underrepresented in social spaces. I try to offer support for the organic experience here.

We both clearly like the game - wouldn't both be here if we didn't. I am speaking out here so that Rare can understand there are people in the community who would support slower content infil in exchange for time to really work out some kinks in the game.

Nothing wrong with that, what I take issue with specifically,

why is the game so broken

that's just tearing the game down from the start. It's like bringing attention to someone and then starting it with "What is wrong with A B or C"

RARE makes it hard to love this game sometimes

Depends on what kind of vibes people are attaching to.

If people are regularly around others that are always overly critical and unfair about situations and largely negative about others, and they attach to it, then it's difficult to love something.

The reason that I am always attached to the organic experience and those that play organically is because they keep me in check. I'm like anyone else, I am just as vulnerable to those defeatist/discouraging cycles and habits as anyone.

When I see people enjoying this game as I adventure around it helps me stay focused while I am around people in the feedback/social areas that are excessively critical. There is a balance that is created by seeing and hearing people's love for the game. Most of all the adventurers that play organically and only are here to play a game they enjoy, no content, no brands, no drama, no beef, no cliques, just enjoying the experience.

I do enjoy the game but it's all about the community to me. That's what makes it rewarding for me, I wouldn't play this game as a single player game, even if it ran perfectly.

  • The surface of the water issue is getting annoying lol.

I thought the qol team was already set up and working...apparently not quite yet from the video.

  • @th3-tater Yeah that one is turning into a real bother at the moment, hope they make some progress towards fixing it!
