Hourglass island

  • So imagine if there was a mode in the main game where you would be able to create a small fort on any island, setup cannons around it, maybe have a couple of skellies man the cannons or maybe not but as an option.
Then once setup you have something similar to hourglass, enable a pvp fight where whomever is looking to attack is spawned in just like HG mode, they have a time limit to attack your base either far away from their ship or just close combat, but in the end once your fort is destroyed they still have to kill you to take the base and take an item you were defending, so they do have to pvp close combat in order to complete the "raid".

If you win they are despawned and moved to another server, if you lose they take the loot, rep and you are sent to another server.
This would create a mode to basically focus on pvp that is not dedicated to ship combat, allowing close combat practice.
Also adding that when creating the base you would have to spend your gold on supplies for the base giving us another outlet to spend gold, other than the cosmetics and supplies for combat which is limited to ships mostly.
Anyone believe this is a good idea or not?

  • I like the idea and could use some polish and some balancing... I like the idea of being able to take over a sea fort and vote on an hourglass inside it to begin an hourglass match. Instead of diving your ship scuttles and you are enqueued for a match. Ships will invade you and they have to... something something something like the mystic veil, like destroy fortifications with their cannons and invading your fort to raise their flag to win. If their ship sinks they lose...

  • create a small fort on any island

What if someone puts it on an island I need to visit? Maybe tall tale or riddle?

I don’t wanna wait nor partake in the fight. I just wanna finish my stuff.

  • @burnbacon You don't have to, just like HG battles you can see them fighting doesn't mean you need to get involved, but they could also limit these bases to areas of islands that have nothing on them or maybe some form of taking over an actual fort which you along with the AI that is there defend it, a sort of raid where you are part of the defenders for a brief amount of time or heck even create new islands in the empty areas of the map specifically for this purpose.

Anyways there's tons of ways of fine tuning these things.

  • @lordqulex It just seems the game needs 2 major things added
1- To have other venues for spending our gold
2- PVP based on close combat other than it's current state which is mostly on ships and once in a blue moon on islands.

Agreed on #1, but they have to be careful. I'm irked that I have to pay to repair my ship. The moment you sail by Mermaid's Hideaway or Snake Island or something boom, wasted. I know 10k is virtually nothing but still I kind of resent not spawning in with a fresh ship. They've tried doing this with supplies, but the community railed against storage crates costing 15k. There needs to be something to spend gold on, but it can't give an in-game advantage, can't be too expensive, can't be too tedious (I hate item durability in games). Now that voyages don't even cost gold any more I can't even imagine what we'd spend gold on...

Honestly that's what the siren skull should have been. But even with slower ships, once the skull hits the island it's as good as turned in. Maybe instead they should have had you place the SoSS on a pedestal and done a ritual (5m timer?) and then turn it in.

Honestly, I've never been a fan of TDM, but for other players who keep saying, "Hey, we can use this for TDM!" in every new Adventure or game mode or random event (or Tuesday), maybe if we can get something added to the sandbox they'll leave the rest of us in peace to do their own thing and not try and force it on every other pirate that wanders by (I'm thinking not too fondly of the "A Hunter's Cry" adventure debacle last year).

To that end, if we're workshopping ways to make this idea feasible why not use the existing skeleton fortress islands for that purpose?

Okay, so the Skeleton Fort and Fort of Fortune world events are two of five in the world event rotation at any given time, which means for the other 60% of a server's full lifetime all nine of the skeleton fortress islands in the game are sitting vacant and completely unused except for the random-odd pirate harvesting gunpowder kegs.

I only say we should use the skeleton fortress islands and not the haunted sea forts because the haunted sea forts are already inhabited by enemies at all times, contain treasure at all times and are all exactly identical layout-wise except for cosmetic differences, so you'd always be fighting the same fight and I would imagine it would be prohibitively more difficult for the developers to go in and figure out how to turn "off" and keep off the already programmed enemy and loot spawns. It should be much easier for the "random" generator that selects which fort turns into a SF/FoF Event to see one is already in use and skip to the next free one in the series. Skellie fortresses are almost always empty and are all drastically different layouts, making each battle unique each time.

If, like @BurnBacon mentioned, we're worried about overlap of Tall Tales or trading company voyages taking you to an island that someone's "fort" has been constructed on, there are nine fully built and most likely vacant islands already set-up for exactly that purpose. Even already have cannon emplacements installed! You can sink gold into adjusting defences (additional walls, doors, cannons, etc) like @EVA1977 recommended and run your own little TDM mini-world event against as many invading crews as you wish.

There are details that would need to be fine-tuned by development in regards to what is possible in-game using the engine and such, but it would be nice to get some more use out of the skellie fortress islands and keep the TDMers away from the rest of us "normal" people... 😉

  • @thegrimpreacher I did notice when i first started playing the game that there are areas on islands that have cannons strategically setup along with barrels with cannons and always thought maybe in the future there's going to be some event here, but sadly nothing as of now.
The occasional skellie will be firing on you from some of them but not enough to merit saying it served it's purpose.
Also having the inactive forts be used by us would also be a great idea.

  • @lordqulex I don't even spend my gold on cosmetics anymore and supplies never had to in HG battles so definitely need something else.
